Doesn't work for a true puller!
2 Stars
Doesn't work for a true puller!
I've used halters that the dogs legs go through and it attaches behind the shoulders. I've used prong collars (which I despise, as they can really hurt a dogs throat). I've used a leash that wraps around the dog's waist and pulls tight to stop them from pulling (it worked for about 15 minutes, then he again pulled so hard that he actually poo'd liquid the next day). And then I read all the wonderful reviews on this product, and thought, OH, this is the ONE! Well, it isn't. The first one I purchased was actually defective, it was assembled with the nose piece already under two of the plastic retainers, so that the elastic was over the top of his nose and began to wear into his fur and skin. I replaced it, thinking it would work if it was properly assembled, even got another one for my second dog, thinking this was really the ONE! Well, the second dog, who only pulls occasionally, but quite hard when he does, I'll admit, it does make him walk without as much pulling. But when confronted with a dog barking behind a fence, he will still pull me across the street, and no amount of tugging on that collar with stop him. But the first dog, a 65 pound almost 3 year old American Staffordshire? It doesn't even slow him down. First day of use, he spent the entire 1.5 hour walk dropping to his belly and trying to get his paws under the nose strap. Second day of use, he would do the same, but only every 5 minutes or so, the rest of the time just walking with a strong pull. But the third day we were back to normal, he pulls horribly, actually yanked my 200 pound hubby off his feet and face planted him on the trail we were hiking. Now, I did buy these to make our hikes more enjoyable for everyone. I hike with 3 dogs, a female that is a wonder on the leash, my 5 year old male who is sometimes good, sometimes a horrible puller... and the new dog, under 3 years old, probably never walked much on leash until we found him 8 months ago, but since that time he has been walking a minimum of 5 miles a day, every day, and has been a HORRIBLE puller. He has pulled the leash from my hands, pulled me to the ground and actually drug me a few feet, and is completely uncontrollable if we're greeted by a deer, hog, possum or raccoon. And that's why I went with this collar, thinking it was humane, would be comfy for him, but would give me more control. Well, that hasn't been the case, not at all. And after almost 4 weeks of use, you can see the wear on the nose band! Within two weeks the elastic on the band was already warped and curling. Now, not even 4 weeks into use, the actual material of the nose band itself is shredding and fraying. When in use, that nose band is the ONLY thing holding the collar to the leash, and once it snaps, dog gone, end of story. I had worried about that when I first started using it, thinking if it snapped or gave way, my dog would into those forests and swamps in a second flat. But I thought, eh,, they must have tested this on strong pullers, it will hold. Now, after seeing how it's fraying apart? This thing will be giving way in another two weeks, max. (hee hee, my dog's name is Max)As for the three options they ask you to grade this collar on... the first. Comfort. Neither dog like having that band across their nose, both will try to drop and roll, to pull the nose band over their heads (very easily done, as the "keeper" on the back of the head does NOT keep, it slides and needs constant adjustment!)The second, "ease of use"... yes, it's very easy to put this over your dogs head, put the nose band in place, and tighten it properly by using the "keeper" on the back of the head. However, while it's easy to put on, as I said about, that keeper simply doesn't work, so every 5 or so minutes I'm bending over to again tighten it before they can manage to get the band off their noses.Third... "value for money"... well, if something is fraying out within less than 4 week of use, meaning it will have to be replaced every 2 months or more, depending on the pulling of the dog? Nope, bad value. Now, this might work nicely for a small dog that pulls a bit, and it might even work for a very large dog if you use a 1' training leash. But for a REAL puller? Forget it, look elsewhere, as this is just going to frustrate the heck out of you, frustrate your dog, and you're still going to be pulled down the road. This head control collar is not the answer!

I use these for my two dogs (60# and 70#) who are both very strong, especially when they're walked together and both decide to go after something at the same time! Even if you have a well behaved dog, you may have experienced a moment when the dog bolts towards a squirrel or something similar, and there is no comparison between this Sporn head halter and any other design of collar or no-pull harness that I've tried - you'll never even come close to being pulled down the block with one of these collars, regardless of how big the dog is that you're walking. I've tried nearly every variety of "no-pull" design collar and harness, and really you can't find anything else that gives you the mechanical advantage of this head halter. It's comfortable for the dog, although they do have to get used to having the loop around the muzzle. This just takes patience and training on the owner's part -- start getting the dog used to wearing it for short periods of time in the house before you attempt to walk with it, and make sure you associate putting the collar on with getting treats or playtime or whatever the dog enjoys the most. My dogs will still occasionally try to wipe their faces on my leg or on tall grass as they walk by, but they're pretty easily discouraged from doing this and quickly go back to enjoying their walk. If you're someone with a strong dog who you're physically having trouble working with on the walk, this will help you tremendously. You have to understand that this is not a magic wand, and you will still need to put time into training your dog to loose-leash walk or heel depending on what you're looking for, but for many people this is a life saver because it provides the mechanical advantage over the dog that you can't get with a regular or even no-pull harness or collar. You'll find that with this collar you'll be calmer while walking your dog just knowing that you're more in control, which in turn will relax both you and your dog!

I've also used Gentle Leaders in the past and this is very similar except that your leash clips at the back of the dog's head instead of under their chin like the GL. For me, this collar has the advantage because I found that with the Gentle Leader, sometimes the metal clip from the leash would knock the dog's jaw if it swung the wrong way, and if they moved too quickly in one direction the Gentle Leader's design would cause the dog's head to snap to the side, which potentially seems like it could cause injury. While in comparison this collar may have slightly less of the mechanical advantage over the dog's head due to where the leash clips, it does seem like it's safer for the dog and still provides a HUGE difference in control for the handler if you're used to using any regular (or no-pull!) collar or harness.

I highly highly recommend this product to all of my clients as a long time vet tech and dog groomer. It's a life-saver for handlers in need of help and is also a potential lifesaver for shelter dogs whose handlers need a little physical edge over them to be able to help them learn to walk properly and therefore become more adoptable.

This is very durable and well made, and easy to get on a dog who tends to shy away from us putting nose halters and collars on him (we have a chocolate lab). It seems pretty comfortable for him to wear, and I like that you can add on the nose halter portion when you need more control. But, when we are walking him with the nose portion on, he gets very excitable (jumping, barking, aggressively pulling, etc) and we are unable to get enough control over him because there is too much length to the halter between our dog's neck and the point of attachment to our leash. So if we need to get a good strong grip on the leash when he is pulling badly, we can't get very close to his head and we lose control. It's a big enough deal where my husband no longer will use this halter (he went back to a metal prong collar).

This type of collar works the best for my dog. I have a 70 pound Shepard mix who thinks he's in charge of the world whenever he's out on a leash. He pulls and lunges, and what's even worse he acts very aggressive toward other dogs. At such times, he bites at his leash and becomes difficult to restrain. I have attended training classes with him, and while there has been some improvement he still exhibits unruly behavior. The humane society where I adopted my dog recommends a collar similar to this one. With the other brand it hooks beneath the dog's muzzle instead of behind his head. Otherwise it works in a similar manner by restraining the dog with a strap across his muzzle. The trouble with it though is that my dog can reach the thin strap beneath his mouth. The last time he wore that type he quickly bit through the strap and then took off after a loose dog. I was to the point of not wanting to take him on walks anymore. He pulled way too much and it was frightening to not have him under control.

I'm so glad to have found this type of head halter. There's no way I'll take him out for a walk without it. He doesn't pull me when he's wearing the head halter, and I have better control over him. If he gets too unruly I pull up on the head halter and that keeps him near me. And just to play it safe, he now wears a regular body type harness (fits under his legs and across his chest) along with this head halter. Since both restraints hook to the leash behind his head, he can't reach them. He will twist around and bite at his thick leash, but he can't reach the thinner straps. Obviously my dog would rather go for a walk without having to wear the head halter, but it's the only way I will ever take him out. When he's wearing it he doesn't pull me, and when we come across other dogs I can keep him under control.

Update: I purchased another one of these head halters for my second dog. He also weighs 70 pounds and stubbornly pulls. He had a different type of halter that came with him from his previous owners. It hooked under his muzzle. He still pulled, and it was a poor fit leaving a sore looking mark across the top of his muzzle. In his case, this is the only collar he wears since there is no way it will slip over his (large, square shaped) head. My dogs combined weight is well over what I weigh, and yet when they're wearing their Sporn head halters I can easily manage them. Without, there's no way I could walk them together.

I have a 46 pound pit/mutt mix, and I never really got a great fit on her. I bought the medium sized collar and it always felt pinched under her throat. Tried adjusting it, but it always rode back up.

It helped ease the pulling, but she fussed trying to get it off most of the time (ripped apart two of them in no time at all), and almost killed me a few times going down the stairs as she tried to get the nose part off by pushing her head against my leg.

In high energy situations when she pulled against it, she'd wheeze and cough.

I switched over to the Sporn body halter that goes under her legs and has the fuzzy covers to ease any chafing, and the pulling vastly improved -- no choking, and everyone is way happier.

Didn't work for me, but maybe she has a non-standard head : )

This collar is my ticket to no more pulling! My 75 pound standard poodle walks great until he sees a distraction like other dog a squirrel or even a leaf on a windy day. The Sporn head collar has made a vast improvement. The placement of the head collar has you guiding the dog up very high on the neck which gives much more control. I like how the collar easily transforms into a regular collar. Since I have been using this collar, my dog is listening and walking loose leash!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing dog halter
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 29, 2019
This halter is far superior to others which I have tried and my dog hated. This one is soft and the nose strap is not too wide and fits perfectly without rubbing against the eyes or mouth.
It also had the immediate effect of stopping my dog pulling, though the dog frequently stops to try and rub it off! This hasn't worked so far which I think is due to the easily adjustable fit. When the dog is sitting the nose strap does slacken off and it is possible then for the dog to wriggle it's nose out. But you still have the collar on so the dog can't escape.
I think this halter is as kind as possible for a restraint, and if it means you can control your dog it is a fabulous help. I can't believe what a difference it has made. I appreciate it is no substitute for correct training but with a large 8st German Shepherd (the same weight as myself almost) it enables me to have far more control over a powerful dog . I thought it would be the same as other halters which I've had no success with, but this is far superior and worth paying a bit extra for.

It's a bit fiddly to put on but it does help with pulling so worth the effort
