I will use Gigsky again when traveling, as they seem to have good coverage. Also the management application/web service was pretty easy to use.
Top reviews from other countries
I popped it in my phone as our plane was touching down in Amsterdam, and after a quick reboot (and changing the APN settings as per the included instructions - which was easy) I was online! I used it for a while there before our flight to Italy, and it worked great the entire time we were there. There was only once or twice I couldn't get online, but my wife - who had decided to pay the extra Bell fees as her phone wasn't unlocked - was also offline during those times, so it must have been more the network where we were vs this sim card.
Sure, it's data-only, but I already use VOIP.ms for my home phone - and I was able to set up a voip client (I used Zoiper on my Android) to get/make calls, and even use the voip.ms texting app to send and receive texts. So, for $40 total I had more data than my wife, and she paid $140 to Bell. Plus, next trip - I still have the sim, so I just need to buy some data!
UPDATED on Dec 25 - I bought 2 more plans for my Caribbean cruise in December 2017 - (1) North America and (2) Caribbean. It provided NO data service in Cayman Islands and U.S.A. (Florida, Fort Lauderdale) - these 2 countries were listed in the plan but service not available after purchase. Very disappointed and felt a waste of money for this trip.
Europe - it takes a while for it to register on the network and you may need to manually search and register on the network. After that it works like a charm - I had 4G LTE connectivity pretty much everywhere I went
United States - Again, good connectivity as it uses one of the major networks (which one depends on region) and I had 4G almost everywhere. Canadians should be aware that if you're only going to the US for a weekend, it might be cheaper to pay $7 a day to your Canadian carrier and just use the data from your own plan rather than spending $15 US on gigsky. For longer trips GigSky is still better if you don't need calls
India - it uses the Airtel network which apparently uses only 1 weird band for 4G that no other carrier uses. This means that most phones that have regional variations (Samsung, Apple etc) probably wont have the right frequency to receive LTE using Gigsky in India. Not really GigSky's fault but something to be aware of. In any case it's way better than the insanely frustrating process you'd have to go through to get a local SIM card under India's draconian telecoms laws
Perhaps the biggest plus of having something like this is that you don't need to keep getting a new SIM card in each territory you go and have just one SIM you can top up and use anywhere in the world. It may sometimes be more expensive than local providers but if you've ever torn half your hair out trying to hook-up a SIM in places like Mexico and India, you'll appreciate the ease of use that lets you spend your precious vacay time on fun travel stuff rather than arguing with some disinterested local vendor
