While it technically has a weight capacity rating that can hold my big telephoto lens, I dont recommend it for those. Since the legs are thinner, it gets pretty top heavy and wobbly with that much weight on it, but it handles my smaller lenses no problem (which is what I got it for anyway).
The included ball head is nice and sturdy and allows for quick readjustment. It has a adjustable friction setting you can change depending on your camera's/len's weight.
This ball head is designed with cutouts for the tripod's legs as the tripod collapses by folding the legs up/inverted with the head in between them to save space. Just be aware if you swap the ball head for a different one, the legs might not close as compact as before depending on the shape. You could still collapse the legs downward in that situation if needed, but that will add a few inches to the height of the collapsed tripod as the head would not be inside the legs anymore. Probably not a problem for most people considering this tripod's small footprint, but wanted to point that out just in case.
Overall, great compact tripod if you need a travel friendly one.
Because I grew to love the Manfrotto system so much, I looked into their tripods and got the tubular aluminum version. I really like it. Not such a fan of the "M" latch. I think the brass pin is easier than trying to lower a plastic tab with one hand, but it is doable with practice. The legs and joints are so much more sturdy than my old aluminum tripod, yet about the same weight. On weight- comparing aluminum vs. carbon fiber, I see very little reason not to go with the aluminum. It can raise the camera a whole length farther than my old one as well. I was a little annoyed by the beefy stiffness of the joints, but found this could be fine tuned by backing each of the three screws out about 1/2 turn from tight. By fullying removing only two of the three screws at a time and dabbing their tips in blue Loctite, I was able to get the threadlocking done on all three in an assembled state. I then toyed with exact leverage until the frictions were just right. I like the microphone stand style leg tightening as well, but find myself forgetting which way is which. Again, will just take practice.
Not used to leave reviews but this is necessary for photographers looking for the first Tripod As I did. Struggling with brands, sizes, body material, and max load.
First of all. Im 5'-6" so I find this tripod "fine" for my eyeview. Im not saying perfect because it is fully extended, and I know for sure it loses sturdiness (but not exaggerating, riggid enough)... If you are taller than me you will find yourself bending a little to see through the viewfinder but it gets complicated if you're shooting stars.
As a reference, im carrying my D750+24-70mm and a flash trigger. The total weight was about 4.4 lb and the ballhead did not struggle at it, it holds it perfectly in place. Although the Ballhead knob feels cheap made of plastic, I must say This is Not a +300$ Tripod.
Besides that. The body and style tell you got a well-made Tripod, sturdy and precise. I loved it.
Can't wait to get the carbon someday soon.
