"Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise!"

These words of fatherly advice helped shape Ted Turner's remarkable life, but they only begin to explain the colorful, energetic, and unique style that has made Ted into one of the most amazing personalities of our time. Along the way - among his numerous accomplishments - Ted became one of the richest men in the world, the largest land owner in the United States, revolutionized the television business with the creation of TBS and CNN, became a champion sailor and winner of the America's Cup, and took home a World Series championship trophy in 1995 as owner of the Atlanta Braves.

An innovative entrepreneur, outspoken nonconformist, and groundbreaking philanthropist, Ted Turner is truly a living legend, and now, for the first time, he reveals his personal story. From his difficult childhood to the successful launch of his media empire to the catastrophic AOL/Time Warner deal, Turner spares no details or feelings and takes the reader along on a wild and sometimes bumpy ride.

You'll also hear Ted's personal take on how we can save the world...share his experiences in the dugout on the day when he appointed himself as manager of the Atlanta Braves....learn how he almost lost his life in the 1979 Fastnet sailing race (but came out the winner)...and discover surprising details about his dealings with Fidel Castro, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jimmy Carter, Bill Gates, Jack Welch, Warren Buffett, and many more of the most influential people of the past half century.

Ted also doesn't shrink from the darker and more intimate details of his life. With his usual frankness, he discusses a childhood of loneliness (he was left at a boarding school by his parents at the tender age of four), and the emotional impact of devastating losses (Ted's beloved sister died at seventeen and his hard-charging father committed suicide when Ted was still in his early twenties). Turner is also forthcoming about his marriages, including the one to Oscar-winning actress, Jane Fonda.

Along the way, Ted's friends, colleagues, and family are equally revealing in their unique "Ted Stories" which are peppered throughout the book. Jane Fonda, especially, provides intriguing insights into Ted's inner drive and character.

In
Call Me Ted, you'll hear Ted Turner's distinctive voice on every page. Always forthright, he tells you what makes him tick and what ticks him off, and delivers an honest account of what he's all about. Inspiring and entertaining, Call Me Ted sheds new light on one of the greatest visionaries of our time.

I learned a lot reading about Ted’s journey. He generously shared his wisdom and the lessons he learned from his mistakes.

I read this when it was first published years ago and just re-read it in this year of 2023 and all I can say is: *everybody* should read this book, foremost, because it gives you as honest of a glimpse into a man you're likely never to meet but will absolutely feel as if you have by book's end.

I've been an unabashed, decades-long Turner watcher ever since I read his first "Playboy" interview in 1978 and have always been intrigued by his uniquely Ted Turner mix of brilliant analytical thinking coupled with knockdown, knee-slappin' outrageous humor but it's also obvious that this is clearly a very, *nice* man.

Sure, he "cheated" on all of his wives but not because they failed him in any way but likely because as my own late, inveterate womanizer father once told me: "I have but one life to live and there's just so many other beautiful women out there besides your mother."

These things are personal, however, and in no way reflect upon a man's genuine character---as long as he's honest about it all.

Reading Ted Turner's words and his thoughts is, as ever, *empowering* to either sex: you don't have to be a "man's man" or a "ladies' man" or straight or gay or in-between to appreciate what's written therein; you just have to have a child's open heart and be receptive to the overwhelming positivity and optimism that runs throughout.

It'll stick with you, make you feel good about life, in general, long after you've finished the last page.

More so than The Bible ever will.

In fact, I'd venture to say that God, Jesus AND Allah would all prefer reading CALL ME TED than their own boring extrapolations on Epistemology and Theology.

The book reads quite well, and could be an inspiration for a balanced teen as well as a confidence builder for those older who are about to leap into business. Ted took risks, and the many references to him getting on his knees to get a deal done. He was not worried about what other people think when it mattered. There are so many things we do not do because they are unconventional, ted threw that playbook away. As we go through this economic downturn, we have may people who are still spending money on things that make them look good, instead of making drastic adjustments, painful adjusrments.

Ted partied a lot, but he made sure his kids knew what hard work was, after they proved their worth he rewarded them very well.

I love the book, and could be a good companion for anyone on a transatlantic flight for instance. It will have you laughing here and there as well.

I have also read Sir Ricard Branson's screw it lets do it. Now I wish I had one by Steve Forssett. The three of them are cut from the same cloth. They work hard, have fun and have been successful.

I also credit their wives who seem to have stayed out of the picture and let these gusy flourish.

I BOUGHT THIS AUDIO BOOK WHEN I DISCOVERED THAT TED TURNER WAS READING HIS OWN BOOK HIMSELF. I HAVE BEEN A LIFE LONG FAN OF THE OLD NWA LATER RENAMED WCW THAT TED TURNER LATER BOUGHT FROM JIM CROCKET AND RENAMED IT TO WCW. HAVING GROWN UP IN THE 1980S AND EARLY 90S I WAS A BIG FAN OF THE MONDAY NIGHT WARS BETWEEN WWE AND WCW WHICH AIRED ON TNT AND TURNER NETWORK TELEVISION FROM SEPTEMBER 1995 - MARCH 2001.FINALLY WE GET THE REAL STORY ABOUT HOW WWE WON. WWE LIKES TO BRAG THAT THEY HAD THE BETTER PRODUCT WHICH THEY CLAIM IS WHY THEY BEAT WCW. WELL NOT ACCORDING TO TED TURNERS BOOK. FIANLLY WE GET THE TRUTH ABOUT HOW AND WHY WWE WON. THE TRUTH IS IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WWE HAVING THE SO CALLED " BETTER PRODUCT" AS WWE LIKES TO BRAG. THE ONLY REASON WWE WON IS BECAUSE TED TURNER GOT SWINDLED OUT OF HIS COMPANY BY SIGNING A REALLY BAD MERGER DEAL WITH AOL.... CALL ME TED IS A RAGS TO RICHES STORY AS TED TURNER READS HIS OWN STORY IN HIS OWN WORDS. FROM EVERY THING TO TEDS CHILD HOOD TO HIS MARRAGE TO JANE FONDA TO FORMING CNN, TNT, TBS AND LOSING CONTROL OF HIS CREATIONS. TEDS HEART BREAKING STORY IS READ AND TOLD BY TED TURNER IN HIS OWN VOICE AND OWN WORDS!!.

Overall I thought the book was well worth it. It's a quick and entertaining read. The book steps through Teds life from adolescence to adulthood. It shows you hard work and perseverance can pay off..In the wake of his father's suicide and the imminent sale of the family billboard company, Ted turned things around and made his dad proud. Quickly moving into radio, and finally Television, he also made a name for himself in the world of professional yacht racing.. Too bad he didn't have me around to tell him merging with AOL was a bad idea ;)

As with the case of most "outliers", Ted was in the right place at the right time doing the right things for "most" of his career. Undoubtedly this book proves once again "timing is everything"... Just the same, Ted seized these opportunities and made it happen. The guy even courted Jane Fonda and was successful.... definitely a person I would like to meet some day. Well played Ted, Well played..
