Good streaming service but..
4 Stars
Good streaming service but..
The image should some where near Richmond.YouTube TV offered the channels we wanted, however the but..We live in a small town in Virginia and our isp is CenturyLink. YouTube TV and browsers use the isp's location as the guide for local stations.CenturyLink never shows the local stations that serve our area which should be Richmond/Petersburg. The results we get change on a regular basis. The results are local stations that are returned are 2 to 5 hours away. You can change to the local area you want but only 2 times a year, since CenturyLink changes our location regularly YouTube TV changes our selection based on the isp location. After changes our local area twice and kind of problems occur and after 2 months you cannot access any programming or recordings. We have contacted CenturyLink and they can do nothing to help. We contacted three services the isps use to set your location and they offered little help. Google could offer no help.

I have been a subscriber to Hulu Live TV for the past three years. Recently, I have had issues with Hulu on its performance and picture quality. Most egregious of these issues has been its propensity to simply crash in the middle of a program, most notably live sports events. Since this is not a review of Hulu, I will skip further details and get on with the review of YTTV. I was very surprised at what I got with my YTTV installation. It went smoothly on three Fire Sticks. The setup was very simple. The picture quality is crystal clear, and thus far, there have been no hiccups, buffering, freezing and NO crashing. I found the UI to be much more user friendly than Hulu's somewhat convoluted system. The "Live" tab lists each channel, but since there are 85 of them, that could become tedious when hunting for a certain channel. YTTV solves this issue by making the TV guide list totally customizable. You can uncheck any channel that you have no intention of watching, which removes them from the list. You can also move the others from top to bottom and vice versa so that those that are most watched can be placed at or near the top. Your "Home" tab shows the programs that you most often watch, and also has a row of icons with shows that you can continue to watch. The real plus point for YTTV is its DVR function. There is no limit on the number of programs that you can record. The only limitation of this app is that your recorded programs are deleted automatically after nine months. My thought here is that if you have not watched one of your selected recordings within that time span, you probably aren't going to ever watch it! You never need to be concerned with erasing a show after watching it, or what you have in your library. To set up a series DVR, you merely check the box and it will record all episodes of that show. To access a recorded show, you simply go to the "Library" tab and find it there and watch it. And, you can fast forward through most commercials on the shows you have DVR'd. Note that this feature is not available on Live or On Demand programs. There are other features available that I won't go into now. And, one other nice nuance is that I get all of my local stations, including PBS, in clear, sharp pictures and can dispense with annoying antennas. My one concern, albeit minor, is that the only way to close a program that you are watching, is to completely exit the app. If you wish to switch to a different program, you simply locate it and click. I did an online chat with a very nice agent who walked me through this and explained that this is how the app is designed, but she would bring it to the attention of YTTV tech service.

Overall, after two weeks of using this app, I am more than pleased. The $64.99 per month price tag may seem high, but it is half of what I would pay from my previous cable company, minus the extra boxes and the charges for DVR service.

I'm very happy with YouTube TV so far -- Much more happy than I was with the clunky interfaces offer by Optimum or FIOS. I installed the YouTube TV App on my 4K Fire TV Cube, my iPads and my iPhones and it works great everywhere -- even when away from my house. It was an absolute breeze to copy the shows I watch from my old DVR into the new YouTube Library to setup "recordings". My newly created YouTube library actually had more shows in it than my Optimum library that had been recording shows for months because they do it the right way. By that, I mean that everything is on-demand and your library never get's full because it just holds references to the shows as opposed to copies of them like an inefficient DVR. (Way to go YouTube TV!)

When using YouTube TV on an Amazon FireTV Cube/Stick, the basic remote functions works but not voice commands. In other words, you can't search for shows by name using your voice or control the YouTube TV App in any way whatsoever. This is a minor drawback in exchange for cutting the cable, reducing your monthly cable bill by half, getting a far better user experience, receiving a free DVR and having the ability to add premium channels.

BY my calculations, 200MBs Internet service is adequate for just about everybody. Just because 1GB service is available, it doesn't mean that you need it or that you'll ever use that much bandwidth. For example, 4K video streams at a MAXIMUM of 25MBs so you'd literally need to be streaming 8 simultaneous 4K video streams just to max out 200MBs. That's a tall order -- even with a lot of kids -- to consume so much bandwidth simultaneously. Take it from an IT professional: Your Internet runs the same speed at 200MBs as it does at 1GBs because each individual connection is metered. You can easily prove this for yourself by running an Internet speed test. Save more money -- get 200MBs Internet-only Verizon FIOS service for a flat-fee of $39.99/m w/ no contracts if you provide your own "modem."

The math is easy: Internet-only plus YouTube TV is $88/m; whereas, Optimum's basic cable TV w/phone and Internet is $142/m (while I'm under a 2-year introductory contract that was poised to go up the moment it expires). That's a 40% savings every single month in my situation.

Once I swap to a VOIP phone, I will have better service than before at nearly half the price. Bye bye cable!
