Some items to keep in mind:
- read the manual - it contains step by step on how to set up and adjust the machine, and it's really quite easy. From unboxing to the first cup of coffee only takes a few mins. Dialing it in to your liking may take time, but it's not difficult.
- use a medium bean (per the manual) - there's a notion out there that dark oily espresso beans are needed for big bold coffee. Dark oily beans will gunk up your machine. There are medium espresso beans out there, and they are superb. We use a medium breakfast blend and it's wonderful.
- clean the machine daily - taking the dual spout and water hose off for cleaning is incredible simple and takes very little time to give these a quick rinse. This takes maybe a minute. The manual does say to run a cleaner through the machine for best care. We do this monthly because we clean the other parts daily.
- the water does need to be filled - so keep the machine in an easy accessible location. if you want a larger water tank, buy a bigger machine.
It does not matter if you use the cleaning products as recommended, because after 4 to 6 months of continuous use the machine will present problems due to accumulation of coffee residue in the brewing unit, mainly n the filter screen and also in the drainage valve which is attached to the brewing unit.
Therefore, be ready to send the machine out for a cleaning service (paying ~US$ 100 plus shipping cost if you are able to disassembling and pulling out the brewing unit or $500 plus shipping cost to send the entire machine).
I do possess mechanical technical skills and although I was able to remove the brewing unit without much of a problem (expect about 2 hours at first time and probably 30 min after repeating it for a couple of times), some of the internal parts are extremely delicate (most components are made out of plastic).
You can save yourself some money by disassembling and cleaning the brewing unit and the drainage valve manifold yourself but be ready for some "tough love".
There are several videos out in the internet showing you how to do it but it will take approximately 5 hours to disassembling and another 2 hours to reassembling at the first time. The process will improve over time after you get used to it but it will be a painful learning process.
Be extremely careful not to break any part along the process. I parttally cut some of the plastic latching tabs with a file to make assembling and disassembling easier and prevent from breaking components after repeating the process a couple of times.
Nevertheless if you need any replacement part from Jura, bear in mind they DO NOT sell any internal component. So, if you break something, you will have to buy it from a 3rd party vendor (if you are able to find it), improvise or simple scrap your expensive machine.
I did break one small component (outlet funnel that is attached to the grinder unit) because it is poorly designed and is basically on the way all the time you need to pull the brew unit out and install it back in. Breaking it is just a matter of time.
I called Jura directly and they refused to sell me a replacement. I was able to work around the issue but be aware, although it does extract a great coffee, do not expect any after market assistance from Jura.
Second time around, we found ourselves emptying out the bottom water tray after every 2-3 cups of coffee. Definitely leaking a lot of water as we fill the water tank with almost 4-5 cups of water and have to refill it after 2 cups of coffee.
Like the self clean function, but it shouldn't use and leak upto 2+ cups of water for every 1 cup of coffee it makes. We keep a cup under to collect the water from the rinse cycles, so I know it's leaking into the bottom tray from somewhere else.
Shipped back for a refund. Now trying to figure out if I should stick with Jura or look for another brand.
