    Awesome lens
This lens looks and feels very pretty and sturdy. I am not a professional photographer, however, have used it with canon 7D at night and got wonderful results. During daytime, with 7D, this lens produced crisp pictures with accurate colors. I have also posted picture of an iPhone just to show how the bokeh looks at f/2.8. If you want to see how a camera will look with this camera, I have uploaded a picture of 7D with this lens and a hood mounted. If you prefer smaller size over zoom lenses, this will make you happy. Lens hood, will not just help minimize flare and protect the lens, but also makes it look awesome.

I am an advanced amateur photographer. I pair this lens with my Canon's 50 mm 1.4 to satisfy all of my photography needs (mostly indoor natural light photos of my son with the occasional studio light setup). Nowadays, this lens is on my camera 95% of the time whenever I am planning to photograph my son. I love how compact and lightweight it is. Unlike the 50 mm 1.4, the lens barrel does not expand with focusing. Therefore, I don't have to worry so much, as I do with my 50, about bumping the front of the lens or damaging it in a smaller bag. I often just bring my camera with this lens in my tiny camera bag when I go out. The sharpness on this lens is phenomenal. I also like that it will be useful when I upgrade to a full-frame camera. Some common criticism I have heard about this lens and my responses:

    1) Not a useful focal length (e.g., it is covered by many zooms).
On a crop sensor, I find this focal length very useful. My zoom is f/4.5 at 28 mm with nowhere near the sharpness. All wide aperture zooms covering 28 mm are huge, heavy, expensive, and not as sharp. For my object distances, I can zoom with my feet. On a full-frame, it might be less useful.

    2) Who needs IS on such a small focal length. I'd take a half stop over IS.
I love the IS on this lens. In general, my technique is pretty good. But, when you are chasing a young child and taking picture from weird position (e.g., laying on your back looking up), any help the IS can provide is usually an improvement. Having a wider aperture over IS doesn't help you when you are DOF constrained.

    3) Not a good value.
Probably not a good value for most people, but for me, I wanted a lens that would give me professional quality images without the L-series price tag. At f/2.8 and above, you are getting L-series prime quality images in a lightweight, portable lens.

Perfect 28mm lens. It goes to 2.8f. The only way it could be better is if it went to 1.8f. Great focus and light around the edges on my full frame camera.

I had the old 28mm ef 2.8 and the ef 20mm f2.8 and sold them both because the corners were too soft until stopped down to f8!
More of the same from this one, wider than f5.6 it is not a very sharp lens to the edges. My old cheapo ef 22-55mm has better correction!! REALLY!!

I bought this primarily for low-light b-roll shots. Specifically indoors. The shots look really nice, both wide and close-up.

However, even with a mounted mic, the lens focusing makes way too much noise to be usable for anything other than non-focusing ambient sound. If you're using the on-camera mic, forget it. Click click click every time you move. Not a deal-breaker as the vast majority of my audio is recorded separately, but a tad disappointing.

If you want near-silent focusing, look at the Canon STM 18-135. However it's low-light capability isn't even close to this lens.

I'll leave the technical jargon for the professionals. Coming from your average consumer who happens to have a SLR, I highly recommend this lens based on a combination of cost, performance, and features.

I'd been wanting to play with a prime lens for some time now when I decided to give this one a try. I'm using a 60DS with a 1.6x crop sensor and was considering the 50mm varieties. Factoring in the 1.6x however, I'd be looking at the equivalent of a 80mm. While that length is great if many cases, it was a bit far for my liking (maybe one in my future though!). I really wanted to use this lens for indoor shooting with inconsistent lighting, so the IS was another huge factor. I had a chance to use this at my daughter's birthday party and at a wedding, both a combination of indoor and outdoor shots in both overcast and sunny conditions.

Let's just say this, my wife no longer bugs me to get professional pictures taken of our daughter. The performance in low light situations is superb, but outdoors this lens really shines. The focus is fast and overall I am incredibly happy with this purchase.

So if you're in the market for your first prime lens and IS is important to you, you won't be disappointed.

Just purchased this from Amazon @ a great price. I use the 5D Mark II and wanted something small, light and fast. I like primes due to their lightweight and the face they are faster and sharper than zooms. Previously I owned the 28mm f/1.8, which I liked a lot, but this one is better. There is so much clarity and details in the pictures, more than I notice with my other lens. It is sharp and 2.8, so you can shoot wide open. It is even sharper @ f/4 and due to the IS, you can shoot some extremely low shutter speeds. This is going to take over as my indoors lens, taking over my Canon 50mm f/1.4's spot. Very glad I decided to go with this one. I also picked this up to go with it - it works great and is much less that Canon's.  Rinbowimaging Lens Hood for Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens & 28mm F2.8 IS USM lens, replaces Canon lens hood EW-65B

Horrible Chromatic Aberration. Purple fringe around everything. Waste of money. Can't return as I'm past the 30 day period.
Professional photo studio environment. Poor quality with both the 5d and 7d. Stopped down gets even worse.
