World’s lightest macro lens* and features Image Stabilization for EOS M series digital cameras.
The EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is the world’s lightest macro lens*, featuring a total length that’s less than 2.0 inches so you can take it just about anywhere with its easy portability. To help ensure pictures with minimal blur while capturing details and small objects, the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM also features advanced Hybrid IS image stabilization technology.

World’s first lens with a built-in Macro Lite** which, when enabled, automatically supplies light to your photos as needed, helping to provide a better sense of depth and dimension.
Lighting extreme close-up macro shots can be tricky. The built-in Macro Lite helps make this easier with LEDs that are integrated into the front of the lens, which allow a range of illuminating possibilities. Setting both sides of the light to maximum brightness can reveal previously hidden details and add sparkle to shiny subjects like jewelry or watches. Setting only the left or right side to either bright or dim settings can help create a better sense of depth and give dramatic dimension to minute details.

World’s first autofocus lens capable of focusing at infinity*** in normal shooting and macro shooting with up to 1.2x magnification.
The excitement of macro photography is being able to show something small in a big way. The EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM’s Super Macro Mode lets you get in even closer at up to 0.305 ft./0.093m from your subject. This allows you to see even more detail, fill more of the frame with what you want to highlight and keep unwanted background to a minimum. When using the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM for non-macro “normal” photography, it’s capable of focusing all the way out to infinity just like a standard lens. This is this first time this has been possible in an autofocus lens***.

Hybrid IS helps reduce camera shake for enjoyable handheld photography.
Image stabilization helps minimize blurring in an image due to the small movements common when taking handheld photos. The Hybrid IS system on the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is the same system used in several of Canon’s most advanced EF lenses, and is able to minimize the effects of shakes in the vertical plane (up and down), as well as tilting or at an angle.
Stepping motor (lead screw-type STM) helps provide smooth and quiet operation when taking photos, and near-silence when shooting videos.
Whether you’re taking a close-up photo of a ladybug on a flower or a video of a dog’s cheerful face, you don’t want noise that startles your subject. The EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM uses a lead screw-type stepping motor (STM), which helps ensure fast autofocusing and near-silent operation while recording videos.
One UD lens and two aspherical lenses†help deliver outstanding results at all zoom settings by reducing chromatic aberration.
The EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM uses advanced Canon optics to help provide high amounts of detail and contrast while keeping unwanted chromatic aberrations, lens flare and ghosting to a minimum. One UD lens element and two aspherical lens elements† all work in concert to help provide a sharp, rich image in a stylishly compact size.
† Including one double-sided aspheric lens.
Equivalent to a 45mm standard lens (35mm equivalent) for flexible image capture of various subjects and scenes at macro distances and beyond.
The EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM isn’t just a macro lens. It’s also great as an everyday walk-around lens for a wide variety of subjects. With a 35mm camera equivalent to a 45mm lens, the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is close to the human field of view, and can capture images that appear similar to how you see them normally. This means you can go from a macro photo of a flower’s petal, to a headshot of a friend, to a landscape of a sunset, all without changing the lens.
Acute lens top shape helps provide accurate image capture even at short working distances.
The acute lens top shape on the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is specially designed for close-in image capture. The center assembly of the lens is smaller than the main body, allowing the front lens element to get extremely close to your subject. At the same time, the main body is set back so it doesn’t cast a shadow onto what you’re photographing, or bump against the shooting surface as you get in for that detailed macro image. Combined, these features provide easy, convenient photography that’s virtually unhindered by unwanted shadows from your equipment.

Do see my earlier review below, but I'm now much happier with this lens than I was when I wrote the below review a month after getting the lens. I've now had it out in the field, mostly along the California central cost and used it exclusively for several hundred shots on coastal hikes and some National Park hikes. It's very sharp (as confirmed by its MTF charts) and is my favorite landscape lens. I've stitched dozens of shots into wide angles and cropped severely. And, it weighs less than 30% of the combination 11-22mm and 18-150mm that I carried previously.
As with all of Canon's M lenses, this one provides a lot of quality for the price. I use it mostly for landscape photos when I want a bit of extra sharpness and can use 44mm (full-frame equivalent). While it is sharper than the 18-150mm lens shot at 28mm, that extra sharpness is all in the corners. That said, it's not dramatically sharper in the corners than the 18-150mm zoom (you have to look very close to see it). It also has virtually no chromatic aberration though, of course, CA is easily corrected in most photo processing software like that from Canon or Adobe's Lightroom. Being a prime, it has almost no distortion so handily beats the 18-150mm zoom in that respect (most important when shooting buildings where distortion can be apparent). Supposedly this lack of distortion improves stitching multiple shots from the 28mm lens to form a wide-angle shot, though I've not had any problems stitching multiple shots from the 18-150 to get the equivalent of a 10-15mm lens (even without applying the lens distortion correction in Lightroom). In any event, this one lens can provide images from as wide as 8-10mm by stitching and as long as 100mm by cropping. As such, I've used it a lot as a walk-around prime.
I did not buy this lens for it's macro capability, but have used that feature a few times and it seems to work work very well. I'm not a macro shooter so can't say more than that.
Super nice that it not only is a macro but also a 35mm prime lens to infinity.
Macro and Super Macro work great.
No appreciable distortions.
Integrated led ring light while seemingly cheesy is actually very useful.
I found the lens to be quite sharp overall. Some reviews complained that the bayonet mount is plastic instead of metal but this is the same on the 55-200 and I have not seen any wear at all on that mount so I think the worries are a bit overblown. As mentioned there is a color balanced LED light that has several setting that can be changed but tapping the light switch.

If you know you will need to reproduce higher immediately, then you should rent the equipment, then can invest in the nikon z72s, or fuji gfx 50s.
For me, I get the machets and artwork reproductions I need. Then I can rent equipment to reproduce several pieces very large 60" and get much higher colour depth and dynamic range.
This lens is great in my creative process and postinf on instagram or facebook groups.
Ao collaborate this lens with an M series with rental of high end equipment. If you are more profesh, then you don't need this, just invest in used high ed or new. But this lens works great either way. Commercial applications need different equipment.
It is a factor 10 step up from point and shoot/phone camera lens, visibly better than a zoom kit lens. Its a middle ground that lets you get much done, and have rental access to other things if you are growing in photography or art.
Enjoy, great lens.
