From the Manufacturer
EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM
The EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens delivers brilliant high-speed performance for professionals with minimal glare and superb image quality. Taking advantage of the best in lens technology, it features gapless dual-layer diffractive optical elements for improved diffraction efficiency with reduced flare. These elements are arranged with a large-diameter ground aspheric lens and a UD lens for a new level of sharpness and clarity. New coatings help to reduce ghosting, ensure excellent color balance and reduce fingerprints on the front and rear of the lens.
Professional L-series dust- and water-resistant construction is complemented by impressive performance: a 3 mode Image Stabilization system offers up to four stops of compensation and can even prevent operational errors when the camera is mounted on a tripod. AF stop buttons placed on the front of the lens can automatically stop focusing at any time; full time manual focus ensures complete control no matter the AF mode, and a Power Focus (PF) mode makes for smooth focus transitions when shooting movies. The EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM focuses down to 10.8 ft. (3.3 meters), has a 9-blade aperture for pleasing, soft, out-of-focus areas, and is constructed with lead-free glass.

Looks big and heavy but it stops at big! Believe it or not, this lense really is not as heavy as it looks. Granted I shoot with a 70-200 f2.8 and 85mm f1.2 often and I am used to heavy lenses, but this is my first large lens and I am surprised to see how easy it is to hand hold this lens. Since it is already dark outside, I have been playing with the lens indoor and quite impressed with the focus speed. Even when the focus setting is set to full range, it doesn't hunt for long and provides creamy bokeh almost instantly.
IS is very quiet (I tried but can't hear it yet), I am able to snap pictures at 1/15th hand hold with indoor lighting!
Lens comes with nice case that is a decent size for travel.
Going to give it a full review in few days. So far so good!

UPDATE 1 after about two weeks of playing with the lens:
Focus is extremely fast and quite. It takes time getting used to shooting at 400mm. Make sure you have a need for 400mm or you will find yourself annoyed that there are not much day-to-day need for a lens of this caliber. If you do find yourself needing a 400mm, you have found the one!
It is light weight, solid construction just like all other canon L series but even a notch higher. It feels extremely durable. Picture quality is just amazing even wide open. I haven't quite seen a difference when stepping the lens down to 5.6 or more. The amazing distance and sharp focus of this lens, makes subjects pop out with no effort. IS is very very effective with multiple modes. So far I have not tapped too much into the two new fancy modes but the normal IS has helped me take pictures of any situation I have tried so far.
When using with a canon 2x Mark III extender and Canon 5D Mark II, I lost autofocus even with middle point. I will try to update to latest firmware to see if it supports F8. Manual focus at 800mm is a fun exercise and will take a ton of practice but you have a telescope in your hands that you can handhold!
Be advised when taking photos of items far away (more than a mile), you are condensing a ton of particles and junk, at first you may be disappointed at the quality of the pictures only to find out after a windy/rainy day with super clean air that lens proves to be very sharp.
Color saturation is excellent, I give it a 10 out 10. My 70-200 gets a 9.5/10 and my Canon 85mm f1.2 gets a 9/10 on colors.
Bokeh is creamy with nice circles of light as opposed to polygon. Try a green background and you will be amazed with how the subject stands out and how colors come to life. (Birds are perfect for this - See https://www.flickr.com/photos/bigmaster/16399421956/).
Since this the first review of this lens, I will continue to update it as I go...
After about a couple years of ownership, it is still the lens that I use 95% of the time. I have a 1.4 teleconverter but I only occasionally use it. For me this lens by itself is a good compromise with weight, reach and optics. If mostly use it for birds and it has definitely upped my game.
In 2022 this is still my favorite lens. It packs up well and works flawlessly with my R6 fire making videos I post my videos online on YouTube under Jim Zenor and heron. This lens just seems to take the most spectacular shots
I will enjoy this lens. Just a tad expensive but able to use a big lens even handheld since it is so light weight compared to its size.
Update: Now had this lens for almost two months and really love this lens even more than original review. I look at some photos with this lens and looking back at some taken with my old 100 - 400 Zoom and the zoom all has a little softness to them I hadn't noticed as much until I got this lens and now can see the softness of my zoom lens that this lens is so very sharp and was reason I wanted it and hoped I would get with this lens. It is very sharp and lightweight that I can shoot handheld with the right settings and come up with some really nice shots. Adding another photo of a deer taken a few days ago and it looks great with clarity and resolution that my old zoom would not have produced in equal quality. I took a few of the moon and even with a 2X extender, it came out quite sharp with no noticeable softness with the extender. I really love this lens. Also knowing this lens came from Adorama helped me with purchase as they are a quality camera store and still able to buy from Amazon.
