Customers are mixed about the quality of the kick scooter. Some mention it has a great build quality, is fairly durable, and dependable. However, others say that it lacks reliability over time, the break is a little insensitive, and is weak.

Customers are mixed about the performance of the kick scooter. Some mention that it handles great, the brakes have been working great, and the suspension does pretty well. However, others say that after 2 days the scooter stopped working with an error code '21' flashing. The breaking made the scooter completely unusable and didn't do amazing with steep hills on your terrain.

Customers are mixed about the speed of the kick scooter. Some mention that it definitely is faster, gets up to 15 mph quickly, and is fast enough on level ground. However, others say that it slows down to like 5 mph and then eventually poops out and you have to push it. It also has inconsistent speed with battery charge level, and poor performance on the slightest hill. Charging takes a while, especially with the extra battery.

Customers are mixed about the portability of the kick scooter. Some mention that it's light enough to carry on public transit, and folds easily. However, others say that it’s kinda heavy, awkward to carry, and the battery adds a lot of weight to the handle bar.

I have not had a single problem with either scooter. I even bought two spare batteries as there could be a time when we go into Boston or anywhere-really, and having the extra batteries would mean that no matter where we go, we'll be able to get back either to the truck or public transportation but when it comes down to it, even though the scooters are heavy, when they are not powered they can be kicked down the sidewalks or streets.
The scooters are fast. My boy is 10 and on Sport mode, he can fly. He always wears a helmet and is a fairly accomplished dirtbike rider and skier so, I don't worry much about him being able to handle both the speed and power, which he has been. Even for me, the power is great. Fast enough on level ground and just enough for climbing steep and long uphills as we live in a neighborhood that is at the top of a series of hills or just one big hill in the city.
Battery life has been impressive, but of course, the motors and batteries are new but still, even after a good 16 to 20 mile ride, we have never come home with less than 30% and we are on Sports mode the entire time and not trying to conserve the power at all, never mind that for to get home, we have to go uphill for quite some distance. I also have set the batteries to only charge to 90% and also have a spare battery for the just-in-case-future when the weather gets warmer and we can spend all day, all night riding around.
The headlight is a very nice touch as are the lights underneath. The headlight is bright enough for riding in the darkest of nights, no problem. Having the option to have the mostly programmable light show lighting up under the deck of the scooter is a great way to see where the other rider is at night.
I'm one that actually likes the electric brake that is the left thumb. My boy and I are still getting used to the power it has when turned fully on and even when using it at different rates when summoning up the braking power. By and large, I have never even needed to use the rear, friction footbrake as I'm never a fan of having to wear away my tire, just to slow down. At the same time, it just means that the electric brake has been more than enough to keep me out of trouble. That the electric brake is regenerative, even if the amount of energy returned to the battery is negligible, the fact that some power does get regenerated, and for free, and with no wear and tear on ANYTHING, is awesome.
The spare battery on the post is a nice touch. It does make the post and feeling of the scooter different but once one gets used to it, like with anything else that people get used to, it is like there is nothing on the post. That we have the option to swap it out with another one we can carry in a backpack to get us another 10 or so miles so we can get back to the vehicle, is one of the big reasons why I chose the ES4. It is also super easy to change out the battery as the rubber bungs just get pried out, the allen wrench that came with the scooter to assemble the handlebars-which is a nice tool, a bigger plastic handled T-Allen wrench, the two bolts come out, the new batteyr goes on, making sure to just give the bottom of the battery a nice little fist bump to make sure the connections for the battery get connected and that is it.
Plus, if we ever did drain the first set of batteries, we'd ride slowly, conserving the power to get either home or back to the truck so we don't have to actually kick-scoot back.
If there is a knock, and one that my boy and I don't really mind, is that as the tires are solid, the ride is firm but easily tolerable. As we have all had Razor A5 kickscooters, compared to those urethane tired and non -suspended scooters, the ES4's ride on air. The suspensions both front and back are enough to help with the ride. There is definitely that front clacking when one hits the front wheel hard on a bump or crack, but if one is good, one just either avoids or, slows down for the bumps or cracks or, if one is really good, will just rear back and have the front wheel loft over whatever obstacle might cause the clack. My boy and I have gotten used to both the sound and how the scooters react over most terrain/pavement.
The entire scooter, minus the external battery and the fenders, is Aluminum. It is heavy duty. The handlebar controls are plastic but, Segway sells the replacements for all the handlebar parts and it would take a 2nd story fall or full speed into a wall or barrier to bend the steering stem or the deck. Even all the LED lights under the deck are recessed well into the solid aluminum chassis. The build quality is all there, at least externally.
I also like how most all the parts that make up the scooter are available. I can imagine eventually needing a new internal battery and maybe a front wheel motor but the other big reason I chose the ES4 is for all the replacement parts that can be gotten should wear and tear and time take their toll on the original equipment.
My boy has about worn out his front tire after some 70 miles as he is only about 70 lbs so when he accelerates at WOT from a stop in Sport mode, he can get the front tire to spin up to speed as he is so light. Meanwhile, my front tire is still in decent shape and the rear tires have almost no wear at all.
The app is good enough and shows me all I need to know and when the battery charger is plugged in, it will show where the batteries are with regards to %-left before fully charged.
I'll also agree with the other review that has the battery bars as being hard to interpret with how much battery life is left where the app will give one the exact amount of %-left for the batteries. I'm glad I went with the ES4 as between the speed/top speed, nice acceleration in either normal or sport mode and the great range. When I go out for a ride, I'm going out for a ride and a 10 mile or less range was not going to cut it. That we can get a good 20 miles, on mostly level ground, not needing to go slow as cruising from 12-17 mph is almost effortless, and to be able to swap out the external battery in the field to get 10 more miles, the ES4 was a good choice.
It has only been a month with the scooter and less than 100 miles. Once the spring comes and then summer and we can ride more and more and more, it will be nice if the scooters can go a few more years or even 5 years and the next generation of stuff with maybe more speed, more range and a lower price will come and I'll be 5 years older and gulp, the kids will be 14 and 15 years old.
DO NOT BUY! DO NOT BUY! DO NOT BUY! DO NOT BUY!
DOOOOOO NOOOOTTTTTT BUUUYYYYYY!!!
UPDATE 10/6/21: the rear fender AND brake just cracked and fell off the scooter at a red light. the lights stopped working, and the somehow the battery became disconnected? i started the repair process in JUNE and they got back to me right away and sent out a return label. unfortunately i wasn't able to pack it up for shipping (no tape) and let time slip by (thanks pandemic!), so by the time i was able to get tape about 3 weeks had passed and i wasn't sure if the label was any good anymore, so i tried to contact them... this is where everything else went to hell - they told me the label was no good and they'd send another- then, they didn't. then i decided to try chat again and i find out SEGWAY WAS MOVING FROM TEXAS TO CALIFORNIA AND WASN'T ABLE TO TAKE REPAIRS AND TO WAIT A WHILE - so i emailed to ask how long and got no response so i left it alone for 2 weeks. then i checked back in and someone had responded the next day (EYEROLL PLEASE) and now no one was responding. FINALLY someone answers my email and asks for my shipping address again, so i give it, and nothing..... so i chat again, and guess what? THEY DON'T HAVE PARTS OR REPLACEMENTS! so they have no way to tell me how long they'll have the scooter before anything can get done; so they said they'd refund the thing. great, except they sent a new label with an rma that said i could track the repair, and now no one is responding to my email asking "how long for the repair" or "am i getting the refund they said i'd get" so i'm not sending the thing to have it held hostage. WHAT A CRAP SITUATION WITH SEGWAY! i missed the ENTIRE SUMMER because of this bs. i had a lot of fun when it worked and wasn't falling apart. i alsmost killed myself in a human scorpion back in february, and it was still worth it - now it isn't anymore. the worst part is that i purchased the extended amazon warranty but it doesn't kick in until the manufacturers' warranty expires and that means letting segway ignore me for another 2 months. notice my original review also complained about customer service and i guess that's a pattern. ↓
the es4 came locked at a 5.8mph speed limit in all 3 modes. customer service is a joke, they know resetting doesn't fix this problem, but they keep telling you that anyway. i get the feeling their cs is reading a manual and have no idea what they're talking about. they tend to encourage you to replace it like the next one won't have the same problem. I'm probably returning not replacing specifically because i can't risk a replacement going on the fritz after the extended warranty amazon sold me runs out because i don't trust segway ninebot customer service to be able to help after its too late to return/replace. too bad too, because i do like the scooter i just need it to do what it advertised.
