Turning the Storm (The After Dunkirk Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 7,720 ratings

As World War II reaches a tipping point, one heroic family is determined to help turn the tide.

"A sweeping, wonderfully crafted saga...Jackson has created a masterful, enduring tale." —H.W. "Buzz" Bernard, award-winning author of When Heroes Flew

Feeling the mantle of duty lying heavily on their shoulders, the Littlefields are pushed to their limits in the much-anticipated third installment in the AFTER DUNKIRK series.

The Blitz is in full force.

Bombs rip relentlessly through London, destroying buildings and rattling confidence.

How much more can the country—and one family—take?

As Britain falls further into chaos, the Littlefields—ever-dedicated—must keep fighting. Their country needs them now, more than ever, and each sibling will be tested in ways they never imagined.

Jeremy prepares to fly a mission without his trusted Eagles. But the sudden capture of someone he loves will force him to choose between fulfilling his duty and following his heart.

Still held as a POW at a high-security facility, Lance grows more and more desperate to make an escape.

And thousands of miles apart, Claire and Paul—both armed with top-secret war intelligence—experience a similar struggle: They know more than they can say. And that knowledge places their siblings in grave danger.

Meanwhile, at home and under German occupation on Sark Island, the Littlefield's parents struggle as food becomes scarce and the fire in their bellies is joined by a gnawing hunger.

Then, in a move that shocks the entire world, Germany invades Russia.

But is it really a surprise to Churchill?

What will it mean for Britain—and for the Littlefield family?

TURNING THE STORM is a can’t-miss, action-packed addition to the saga of four daring siblings willing to sacrifice everything they hold dear in order to save their country—and do each other proud.

Prodded by his publisher after the success of his first series, Lee launched into writing fact-driven, well-researched WW2 novels in the After Dunkirk Series that trace the challenges and acts of courage of a family scattered in England, across Europe, and to the US and the Pacific Theater during the world's most widespread and destructive conflict. Join Jeremy Littlefield as he escapes Dunkirk and then engages in dogfights flying a Spitfire. Watch Paul as he learns of and copes with intrigue at the highest levels in Great Britain and the US. Scheme with Lance as he outthinks tried to evade capture. Will he succeed? And delve into decrypting and analyzing German military messages, anticipating what the enemy will do next. Can this family survive and find themselves intact at the war's end.

Of Lee's prior series, The Reluctant Assassin (formerly Curse The Moon) was his first and was published in 8 countries. It follows Atcho, a counter-revolutionary leader in Cuba turned unwilling spy in the U.S. The odds he faces seem overwhelming as he must choose between saving the world from a nuclear holocaust - or his daughter. In Lee’s second book, Rasputin's Legacy, Atcho faces a surreal challenge: he must save the country that enslaved his own or deliver control of the Russian nuclear apparatus into the hands of a maniac. Can he set aside his personal desire for revenge? In his third book, Vortex: Berlin, he battles forces bent on keeping absolute power in the divided German city. Can he stop the massacre intended to terrify increasingly rebellious citizens determined to regain control over their own lives? And in the fifth and final book of the series, he goes after the terrorists who bombed the World Trade Center in 1993.

Lee lives with his wife in Texas and is a full-time writer.

Top quality writing, outstanding research and a storyline with multiple subplots and numerous well developed characters make for an outstanding series. The pace is swift and consistent, making for enjoyable reading. This story is very realistic with all characters subject to the ravages of war. Every time I've fact checked something I thought might be incorrect, the author has been spot on!

Basically a soap opera based on WWII, Lee Jackson weaves in historical facts into an entertaining story. A little on the simplistic side but it’s entertaining. I like th3 characters and the interactions. I’m sure these actually happened millions of times during the war. Highly recommend.

Generally speaking, some authors are good at explaining technical details while others are good at portraying the nuances of human relationships. Very few do well with both. One exception to this is Lee Jackson's After Dunkirk series. The story begins with the British military being pummeled by an advancing German Army. Readers are soon Introduced to a young British soldier who is quickly rescued and hidden from the advancing German army. From there, strong relationships develop between the English soldier and the French family. This relationship develops and grows throughout the series. All of this occurs against the backdrop of the horrors of World War II. Jackson's Seven Volume series takes us around the globe where we meet many courageous people, who in many ways are just like us. It is almost impossible to read this series and not come away with the realization that we came so close to a German victory and a vastly different world today. Jackson also documents in great detail the relationship between Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and other heads of state (Stalin, De Gaulle etc.). He depicts how their leadership brought us through this awful period and created the world that we live in today. He also explains the technical and strategic intricacies of waging war on a global scale without overwhelming the reader with detail and jargon. This series of books would be an excellent read for anyone with the slightest interest in WWII history and how the world managed to survive that awful period in our history.

Kudos to Lee Jackson for his latest bravura novel in the saga of the Littlefields. Jackson again does a masterful job of crafting his story around the family members who provide the essential and very human connectivity between what might otherwise seem to be a sweeping compendium of far-flung events. I love that he continues in this novel to shine a light on many unsung real-life heroes like Red Tobin, Shorty Keough, Andy Mamedoff, Leon Faye, Jean Monmousseau, etc., and especially on women whose heroism and exploits have been either unknown or forgotten by American readers, and very probably European readers too, e.g. Jeannie Rousseau, Marie Fourcade, and Betty Pack. Breathing new life into their reputations and recounting their exploits in an entertaining story is an awesome contribution to the genre of historical fiction IMHO. One hopes it will also garner the attention of movie-makers who want to make films about real women heroes - there’s lots to choose from here.

In this novel and its immediate predecessors, Jackson also shines a light on what (for American readers especially) are largely forgotten yet immensely important “war fronts” that have been relatively neglected historically and in popular culture. These events have been overshadowed by the immense weight and scope of the major combat actions that followed America’s and Russia’s “awakenings” in 1941, added to the America-centric nature of Hollywood movies and popular books published in the US about WWII, and also because of the clandestine nature of many of the historical events that Jackson covers. These factors left many of the people and actions that Jackson bases his story on unheralded by the general public for a long time. Reading his stories provides much perspective on the British air war in the lonely and harrowing years before the emergence of the Grand Alliance, on the French Resistance, and on the clandestine activities at Bletchley as well as those in which Sir William Stephenson (codename "Intrepid") and "Wild Bill" Donovan (who led the OSS, progenitor of the CIA) were engaged. The research he puts into the story really stands out.

I know on Goodreads this third book has a rating of 4.5 + stars but I'm going to disagree with that. Books one and two were both very good books and rated 4+ stars. All three of these books were told from the British perspective and were very informative, especially books one and two. This book, Turning The Storm, continues the saga of Jeremy, Lance, Paul, Claire, and their parents. It is a good book and very informative but to me it is full of the details needed to further the story, but while very necessary, they are pretty predictable and at times boring. Hence the the 3.5 star rating. Book three sets up the story of America finally joining with Britain and Russia in the fight against the Axis powers of Germany/Japan/Italy. Now that the USA has joined the war I expect the story to get back to very good and very interesting 4+ stars or more...

Lee Jackson has done his research for these books. The whole story is written like a biography and is like you are living the story and the misery that everyone is suffering. We know the nail biting life that the Resistance lived but, you too want to be there encouraging them in their missions against the Nazis.

i'm loving this series of books a real look into some of the politics that where behind some of the things that happened. my grandad always wondered if they knew Coventry was to be bombed because his artillery unit was pulled out the the day before plus there's still plenty plenty of action and excitement to keep you glued to the pages. i just wish the author hadn't used American words/phrases out of British mouths like a British person in the middle of the London blitz would not say "the bomb fell two blocks from here" but I'm still looking forward to the next instalment
