Product Description
The Canon EOS C100 Digital Video Camera brings together the renowned technology of Canon CMOS sensors, DIGIC DV III Image Processor, and EF lens compatibility in a smaller, lighter body. Modular and compatible with a host of Canon and third-party accessories, the EOS C100 brings true cinema quality to independent event videographers and video production organizations.
The EOS C100 sports the Super 35mm Canon CMOS Sensor and Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor of the C300 and records at 24Mbps using an AVCHD codec for easy integration in existing production workflows. Operability and customization make the EOS C100 an ideal camera for one-person operation while providing expanded professional capabilities such as HDMI output with embedded Time Code, support for external recorders, remote operation, and complete manual control over both video and audio recording.
Canon Super 35mm CMOS Sensor
The EOS C100 is equipped with the advanced 16:9 Super 35mm Canon CMOS Image Sensor. The large sensor format allows for cinematic image capture by providing depth of field control and dynamic range characteristics reminiscent of film for truly arresting images. The 8.3 megapixel sensor maximizes pixel pitch to permit greater sensitivity in low light while minimizing noise. The unique sensor design allows the EOS C100 to captures independent Red, Green, and Blue channels for Full HD 1920x1080 video. The resulting picture features the color and image quality similar to that of a three-chip camera with a single sensor.
Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor
Designed and built by Canon for the highest quality HD RGB processing, the DIGIC DV III Image Processor uses proprietary circuits and architecture to deliver exceptional image quality at the highest speeds, with low power consumption and minimal heat output. It processes the RGB image data—originating from the single CMOS sensor of the camera—into three channels (Red, Blue and Green) to maintain the rich resolution and clean color fidelity formerly possible only in three-chip sensor designs.
Multiple Recording Modes and Frame Rates
The EOS C100 supports shooting AVCHD bit rates up to 24Mbps (LPCM) at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. Frame rates of 60i, PF30, PF24, 24p, 50i, and 25p are all available for any number of production workflows. In addition, the 60i frame rate offers reduced rolling shutter artifacts for cleaner, more realistic images. The EOS C100 supports relay recording of long takes between dual SD cards or can write video to both cards for redundancy in the event of SD card failure. Pre REC mode buffers approximately 3 seconds before the tally light activates, instilling confidence that you have captured your take as you planned it.

I was initially, unimpressed with the camera when it came out. The specs were decent but it didn't offer anything extraordinary, and then coupled with the initial price, it didn't seem like a camera worth purchasing for most. However, the main attraction of this camera was the sensor: a 4K sensor that outputs a 1080p image onto SD cards. So I rented this camera for a few projects and was completely surprised with what I got out of it. I eventually bought it and have used it for over 6 films in the span of 8 months. Still learning the ins and outs of the camera and working to squeeze the best possible image from it, but so far, I am truly loving this camera for my projects.
Despite the lack of some important features (lacks higher than 30fps frame rates, low bitrate AVCHD, poor EVF, limited LCD articulation), the image quality that you get out of it is really superb and coupled with its form factor, XLR inputs, ND filters, dual SD card slots, and low-light capability, it makes for a great documentary or event camera. Although, I did note that the AVCHD had a low bitrate, that does NOT mean it's a terrible codec. It is great for 90% of the work I do. There are times when I would like to have a better codec right inside the camera. That's why another great benefit to this camera is that you can output to an external recorder for a higher bitrate in a less compressed codec.
If I were looking for a camera that had the BEST possible image quality at this price range, I wouldn't go for this. You can get a much better image from something like the Blackmagic cinema Camera for significantly less. But if you need a great low-light, ergonomic camera that can do audio and picture REALLY well, this is one of the few cinema cameras at this price point.
As anyone who is looking to purchase this camera probably knows, there were a few main upgrades Canon made to the Mark II. The improved viewfinder, the fully rotatable OLED display, MP4 codecs, 60fps at 1080p, and built in microphone are just a few of the many upgrades added.
One of the biggest things I like about the Mark II is it's ability to be stripped down much more so than its predecessor. With the new joystick added under the screen, and built in microphone, you are now able to detach both the side grip and handle unit on the Mark II without losing control of your settings, or audio.
Another critical upgrade is the new Digic IV processor Canon introduced. This helps process the incredible amount of image data much more efficiently than the original C100, which ultimately means that you get a final picture that's sharper, more color accurate, and with less moiré. (Excuse my spelling?)
My only main qualm about this camera is it's lack of higher frame rates... Was 120fps so much to ask for, Canon? It is almost a $6000 camera, after all. Guess we'll have to stick with Sony if we want slow motion. (-;
I could go on for days about all the reasons this upgrade is worth it, but I'll leave that to someone else. For anyone who is interested in learning more about this camera, look up reviews on YouTube and Vimeo!
This is a great camera for pretty much any situation. I’ve shot sports, a commercial, short film, and a TV pilot with this camera. Coming from a DSLR user, buying this camera is probably the best decision I’ve made for my career. I can’t count how many job opportunities I’ve lost because I didn’t own a camcorder.
This camera has a 4K sensor, put transfers to your card as 1080p footage. So essentially, it shoots 4K footage that’s downscaled to 1080p footage, which is what I’d be doing anyways if I had a 4K camera. This saves me post production work time; if exporting at 4K is a must for you, I’d suggest looking at other options.
PS: this takes EF lenses, as well as EF-S lenses.
He is so happy so that's my review
