There and Hack Again is a tabletop roleplaying game inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and other fantasy luminaries like Lloyd Alexander, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, and Ursula K. Le Guin. Using a version of David Black’s brilliant Black Hack tailored for epic fantasy gaming, There and Hack Again brings a fast playing, modern ruleset to classic fantasy.

There and Hack Again is a complete game that includes everything you need to play epic fantasy adventures. Within its pages you will find rules for creating heroes and developing them over time, plus rules for combat, adventuring, magic, spellcasting, and taking dangerous journeys through the wild places of the world. The book also includes an assortment of adversaries, a simple method for handling treasure and wealth, a collection of unique magic items and guidelines for creating your own, and advice for playing and running a classic fantasy game.

And for those familiar with our sword and sorcery game, By This Axe I Hack!, this game uses an almost identical ruleset. Characters, monsters, magic spells, and most rules are strongly compatible and interchangable between games. Where there are differences, they are there to support the feel of a epic fantasy adventure rather than a pulp sword and sorcery yarn.

This may be a dumb question but how do monsters with special abilities work?

Does the giant spider have to choose between the XXX attack and web ability each round?

I have a rules question. When it says -2 penalty to Dex, does that mean Dex rolls or the stat? For example, halflings get a +1 bonus to Dex and Con but a -2 penalty to Str.

Awesome! The game is geared to have you a little bit weak at levels 1 and 2, the idea of being that you should move through those levels fairly quickly as compared to the rest. Depending on how long you guys are going to play and whether you want starting characters to be a bit more heroic you may wish to either increase everyone's test values by one point each or do the classic roll four dice and take the best three when rolling for your stats

It arrived today and looks pretty good from a first glance. The book is a nice match to the author’s two By this Axe I Hack books. I had received a notice with link to get the POD at a discount due to having bought the pdf and put the order in within a few minutes of the post. That the option vanished so fast had me worried that it might not be ready but at first glance it looks to be the revised latest copy and printed well. I would recommend it as soon as the author reopens the POD option and look forward to hearing From the author on my post above.

I can't say any game would sell that high, but I can say that this game at the correct price, and your By This Axe I Hack game are some of the best values on the market and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a system that runs very well.

Everyone should have received an email about this, but just in case, we have updated There and Hack Again by adding an Appendix with an optional Roll Under rule as well as a few new weapons and boons, things that were left out of the core book. Consider this our way of saying we're sorry the print option is taking a bit longer to get organized than we hoped. But it IS coming! Thanks again for your patience!

Hi, in the gaining levels section it says 'A failed test increases the corresponding Stat by 1. Players may attempt to increase any one Stat twice if the first attempt fails'. Shouldn't it say that a successful test increases the stat or am I missing something ?

You have the right idea. The wording is tricky because a successful test is a failed attempt to improve the stat. so if you succeed you fail and if you fail you succeed. When the text says “if the first attempt fails” the word attempt should not be interpreted as the test. The word attempt should be interpreted as the attempt to approve the stat. In other words, if you fail to improve a stat, you can try again. I hope that helps. Thanks for your interest in the game, and please feel free to ask any other questions. Hope you enjoy!

If you look at the preview, you can see that the game handles the core rule just a bit differently: it's a roll high (not low) system that allows for criticals and lets you get better at everything as you level up. Moving on to the characters, you see that there are core fantasy folk--humans, elves, dwarves, halflings--and 9 classes (10 really), more than the 4 core Black Hack classes, and they have a bit more meat on their bones than in classic Black Hack classes. There are also boons to help individualize characters.

Those examples are a pretty good model for the rest of the game. We use Black Hack as the core, but we have also added herbs and spices to provide some nuance and give the game a classic fantasy focus and feel (unlike the Black Hack's distinctly punk ethos). That means we have a different magic system, different spells, and different monsters. There is a bit more to combat (though it's still fast-playing). I have By This Axe, the S&S version of the ruleset, and it's got, no exaggeration, just about everything you'd want in a kit to change up TBH. Very smart rules options, and a great array of character classes and features, all modular, and all kept very tight to the simple framework.

I've been waiting on this one since I saw the beta. Buying today. I'd recommend this publisher's work to anyone.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
