We are more interested in edge to edge cleaning technology along with the comparable cleaning attachments with an extended hose with handle and Lift-Off technology. The On-Off button for the brush roll and the suction adjustment knob is more than a convenience, they are safety features.
Will it clean when used improperly; absolutely not. Will it get the job is done when used properly; it absolutely will. We put it to work in the whole house; it takes desire, instructions and experience to properly operate lightweight cleaning technology. The wand and attachments are to be used with finesse and not with force, and use the Lift-Off feature to safeguard the 20874 from tipping over when using its wand. Do not put too much pressure on the wand; it will retract. Set the suction to bare floor and turn off the brush roll when vacuuming bare floors because this safety procedure protects bare floors from any marks.
We endorse the 20874 with five stars because it is the right tool for the job when used properly.
Pet people, DO NOT hesitate!!
I was in such a hurry to try it out that I neglected to tighten the one single screw you have to install to hold the handle in place - I had put it in by hand but had not tightened it. By the time I was done, the screw had disappeared. Now, I've been around long enough to have become a firm believer in Murphy's Law and all its corollaries. I know that if a piece falls off of something it will immediately hide itself in the very last place you would think to search so, rather than getting down on my hands and knees and feeling over the entire living room for a two inch screw, I went immediately to the trash can, reached into the prodigious lump of dog hair the Bissel had just removed from the carpet, and - voila! - there was the screw. And it stands as a testament that the Bissel could suck up that two inch screw without so much as a hiccup.
Just as powerful as the Shark, just as easy to use - if a bit heavier - lights on the head and even the crevice tool, and fully capable of dealing with the long pet hair that is so much a part of the fabric of our existence. So why not five stars? Bissel has succumbed to the same idea as Shark and some others of offering a "power" brush that is driven by suction turning a little squirrel cage turbine in the pet brush attachment and thus offering a "powered" extension brush at a cheaper price. But this is a design fad that doesn't really work very well because it can't produce the torque necessary to keep the brush revolving under any kind of decent resistance. If you really want a powered brush, you need to look for one that advertises a "motorized" brush rather than a "power" brush. If the pet brush was motorized this would absolutely be a five star product - and just the fact that it will deal with long pet hair without even breaking a sweat is darn near enough to get it there.
UPDATE: Three and a half months in and I just wanted to confirm my initial findings. The vacuum itself still works great even with our long pet hair, but the "power" pet brush has succumbed to the same problem as the Shark - hairs get in and wrap around the shaft that drives the squirrel cage, quickly causing enough friction to overcome the force of the suction and stop the squirrel cage - and thus the brush - from turning. One slight bit of good news - unlike the Shark, I found that I could disassemble the pet brush far enough to get at the shaft and, with a needle, a pair of tweezers and lots of patience, clear the hair out and get the brush turning again...but it just does it again. We're going to be shopping for a little handheld vacuum with a MOTORIZED brush specifically to do the stairs, since that is the only place this presents a problem. For the rest of the house this vacuum is great.
Cons- This vacuum is heavy; have to hold the cord constantly while vacuuming, because it won't stay on the hook. Very annoying. Will try to rig something up. The lift off is great but don't know how long the hose will last, and It"s kind of awkward to use. The tightening mechanism on the extender constantly needs re-tightening (again annoying). Need to get a hose extender as it won't reach high areas. What extender would be recommended? I hope this vacuum will have a long life.
