4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

Kolm is different……and different is not good in the villages.Brought to live with the weavers Atil & Erna, and the twins, Nari & Fynn, Kolm tries to live as quietly as possible. But an odd experience during the knife throwing competition leads to an unexpected win. The winners have the privilege of presenting the offerings on Midsummers night to the Tur-ami, the demi-god guardians of the land, who come in larger-than-life animal form.So far Kolm had been having a good day, but it starts to go strange when he is given an offering of meat stew to give to a Tur-ami.Everyone knows the Tur-ami do not eat meat.Forbidden by tradition from speaking at the sacred time, Kolm waits with dread in the light of the two moons, radiant blue Faera and little red Nith, as a wolf Tur-ami approaches. No one has ever seen a wolf Tur-ami before, and when the demi-god decides to eat Kolm’s offering and lay on his feet, Kolm wonders if he has become the next offering. Old Haak, the leader of the proceedings, declares that Kolm has been claimed by the wolf Tur-ami and needs to spend time alone with it.After a broken night’s sleep under the moons, Kolm starts to hear a voice speaking to him within his mind. The wolf begins to communicate with Kolm through mindspeak, exploring his abilities and starting to train him to use them.Meanwhile, the villagers become unnerved by what has happened to Kolm and look for a way to remove him from their community. Kolm is left with no other option but to leave the only home he has known. Nari and Fynn, wanting to escape arranged partnerships, determine to leave with him and the three set out, narrowly avoiding a raid to capture Kolm. With Freyki, the Tur-ami, leading them to a secret destination, they embark on an adventure to discover Kolm’s past and help him forge a future not just for him, but his whole world.

I have led a nomadic life. My journey began in South Australia, my parents being Ten-Pound-Poms, but quickly transferred to the rolling and rather soggy hills of Shropshire.

My desire to be an orchestral musician led me to the Birmingham School of Music for five years. During this time I met my now husband when he gate-crashed a friend’s bonfire-night party. Together we worked and travelled, living in Sweden, China and Germany, finally ending up in Scotland. Whether my life continues to be a nomadic journey is a conundrum I’ve not yet solved.

Before this point in my life I have only written out of necessity. My mother joyfully tells me of a parents evening, when my A level English teacher told her that I thought I could pass my exam without putting pen to paper.

Challenged a few years ago by an author on Breakfast TV and a well-timed free book with a writing magazine, I started to consider the possibility that I may well have a book in me. Thoughts turned to planning, and planning led to a novel of some 125,000 words in about seven months. Without the wonderful invention of the computer and spellchecker, I am not sure it would have been completed in such a short time. That being said, it now feels totally strange to not sit down each afternoon and write my thousand words. Discovering the joy of creativity in the written word has taken me by surprise, but now it has been uncovered, it is a new journey through worlds and characters newly and yet to be formed, an adventure to be enjoyed daily.

I am pleased to say my first novel also led to the completion of the Kolm Trilogy. Just as I have journeyed many miles to arrive at the place I now live in, Kolm also journeys through Teru-Cygni in a quest for identity, history and a future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great fantasy tale, well worth a read

After reading this book I have to admit that I am a fan, that I am looking forward to the next two books. With that said I do feel the need to say that this book is in no way a casual read, like a lot of fantasy titles there are lots of names and places to get your head around, however once you are familiar with the characters it makes the book all the better for it.
A beautifully crafted blend of world building, adventure and intrigue await anyone fortunate enough to find this little gem of a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable "journey of discovery" story in a fantasy setting with a SF twist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2021
Kolm has always known he was an outsider, and when trouble comes to his village, he must leave, along with his adoptive siblings, to find out just where he came from. A familiar beginning to many a fantasy YA novel, but unlike some "epic" book series, this one proceeds apace and introduces some new approaches to the discovery of magic or mystical powers that always accompany these journeys.
The characters are engaging, the plot is genuinely gripping and apart from some slightly improbable geography, the world that MacLaren has created is one that you will want to learn more about. This is billed as part one of a trilogy, and I find myself eager to find out what happens next.
