The good:
- Huge 5TB capacity in a pretty small footprint. This drive is about the same size as the older Passport and Elements drives. The blue color makes it look a little slimmer.
- USB-C to USB-C transfer rates steadily above 130MB/s for large files.
- The USB-C cable includes a compact USB-A adapter so you can still use this with older computer ports giving full flexibility.
- Comes bundled with a very slim software installer for PC and Mac. I don't use the software but generally save it somewhere in case I need it before formatting the drive. Older passport used to include upwards of 500MBs of this software but these new installers are only a few MBs.
The not as good.
- The included cord is pretty short, It would be nice to have a little bit longer.
- The drive is no smaller than previous generations. I guess this is as small as spinning 5TB drives are going to get, now that SSD prices are coming down. Can't wait to get a 5TB SSD in this price range!
- The price is generally 10-30% higher than the older Passport. I don't know that the USB-C interface and faster transfers justify the higher end of that pricing.
I can't comment on longevity as I've only used the drive for a week, but so far it is fast, quiet and stable. I've always found WD drives to be reliable, but I never keep a drive in service longer than 2 years and always have a backup. I hope this one will be as reliable as my past WDs.
In sum: it makes a difference which cable you use for this device. Lesson learned, happy customer.
Measure 119MB sec write speed. Backed up about 250GB of large files - 1MB to 5GB range - from the computer internal SSD to the MyPassport. Used a USB-C cable. Averaged that out as 119 MB second. So a real world test close to the benchmark app write speed figures in other reviews.
Feels solid. Gets hot by the time all 250GB have copied, so maybe that means the case is radiating heat away well? No problems yet - having filled all 5TB of one of the drives and moved on to the next. Does not seem to slow down as more data is added. Copied the 250GB to the second drive - same speed.
Did not reformat - used the Mac format right out of the box, so starting with the drive is easy!
Has a USB-C to USB 2/3 adapter in the box. Untested.
The USB-C plug is tight - snaps into the drive, and hard to remove the first time. Get's easier - which means it might be a loose connection after a lot of plugging/unplugging.
Write performance on a USB-C 3.1 host interface was decent, with 1MB sequential writes running at 112MiB/s, but dropping to 94MiB/s presumably along the slower (outer) parts of the spinning disk.
Linux/BSD people, here's how the drive showed up for me:
WD My Passport 260D 2007 Fixed Direct Access SPC-4 SCSI device
1907697MB (3906963456 512 byte sectors)
Note the enclosure shows up as a separate device, BSD sees it as:
ses1: WD SES Device 2007 Fixed Enclosure Services SPC-4 SCSI device
ses1: SES Device
USB-C is a selling point for me despite some skeptical reviewers here. It isn't meant to be faster, necessarily, that's a function of the interfaces on each end. But it's always a more robust & simpler connector. It lasts long than microUSB (by design) and doesn't need to be flipped back and forth repeatedly until it finally fits. I generally won't buy a device with an older USB connector unless there's no option. USB-C all the way.
A great little drive, and nice-looking too. I might wish it were SSD or that the LED was on the front, but otherwise no complaints.

As someone whose laptop once crashed without any of its files being accessible by experts, believe me, this is a necessity. Were it not for my external drive, I would have forever lost almost 1.5 millions files. I now have two external drives and trade off every other day backing files up to them. Even if you back up to the cloud, I recommend an physical external drive for extra protection.
