NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • After a sudden change of plans, a remarkable woman and her loyal group of friends try to figure out what she’s going to do with the rest of her life—from Terry McMillan, the bestselling author of How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MARIE CLAIRE AND GOOD HOUSEKEEPING • “Poignant, funny and full of life, this is a balm for troubled times.”—People

Loretha Curry’s life is full. A little crowded sometimes, but full indeed. On the eve of her sixty-eighth birthday, she has a booming beauty-supply empire, a gaggle of lifelong friends, and a husband whose moves still surprise. True, she’s carrying a few more pounds than she should be, but Loretha is not one of those women who think her best days are behind her—and she’s determined to prove wrong her mother, her twin sister, and everyone else with that outdated view of aging wrong. It’s
not all downhill from here.

But when an unexpected loss turns her world upside down, Loretha will have to summon all her strength, resourcefulness, and determination to keep on thriving, pursue joy, heal old wounds, and chart new paths. With a little help from her friends, of course.

“McMillan brings her signature wit and wisdom to It’s Not All Downhill From Here. . . . [She] has a gift for creating characters who face serious problems and still have the ability to laugh at themselves. . . . If getting older is this joyful, despite the painful losses, bring it on.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

“I couldn’t put this book down. Not only would I recommend it to others, but I already handed it off to my mom for her to read next.”
BuzzFeed

“The novel skillfully renders the bonds between multiple generations of women. . . .
It’s Not All Downhill From Here is a funny and honest portrait of a woman, late in life, finding second chances. Like a time-tested friendship, the novel comforts.”San Francisco Chronicle

“McMillan proves once again that she is a skilled master at writing dialogue for strong, intelligent women who know how to laugh in the face of tragedy instead of being consumed by it.”
—Associated Press

“A hopeful and hilarious novel that women of all ages can relate to.”
—Travel & Leisure

“[A] warm, winning novel.”
—AARP

“Lively, perceptive . . . McMillan writes with a staggering depth of feeling, credibly capturing the characters’ emotions as she unpacks their interpersonal conflicts. This delightful novel balances inspiration for renewal with the hard facts of aging.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

—She Reads

“This baldly honest, laugh-out-loud story . . . will remind you of just how healing friendship can be.”

Terry Mcmillian is quite comical, witty, and spot on when it comes to the lifestyle of senior living, I had a few emotions from laughter to health concerns. Each character played their part I enjoyed the friendship and the seriousness of family issues with transparency.
I am so delighted to know that the author Thought about what it looks like to bring comedy in a caring way to bring her readers into the lives of these wonderful characters.

Great novel with a wonderful cast of characters, literally and figuratively. Ms. McMillan always tackles challenging themes and issues with faith, grace wit, laughter, love and a dose of real life, without being ‘preachy.’ May we all learn to live from and forgive our past selves as we strive to become better new selves. I gave the book a 5 star rating because TM once again portrayed characters who projected similarities of my own life at this later point in time. Today's woman in their 60s is not like what most of their mothers were at the same age. Some might say that the 60s is the new 40s or 50s, making reference to several aspects of their. One can be at their physical, mental, financial, spiritual, and or emotional peak in waves, stages, or all at once AND NOW have the freedom, confidence, and courage to finally do or live out that lifelong fantasy, dream, bucketlist" or whatever other name one could 'insert here.' I could relate to most of her characters on some level either due to personal or having personal knowledge of someone who had the experience. In this way the book was very relatable and on occasion easily personified a person, place, or thing. I LOL. I was sad. I was disgusted. It was another TM page turner for me. This is one readers opinion. To those who opt to read it as an escape to Covid19, I you won't regret it.

I was so excited to read Terry's new book. I've been a fan of hers for many years. The story starts off very engaging and the main character Loretha is hilarious! Loretha is in her 60s and experiences all the trials of an aging woman, including being grumpy at times, but she has a kind heart and loves her family. When a tragedy happens Loretha must decide if it's all downhill from there. Will she stay in grief and sorrow or push forward?

Often concerned more about her family and others than herself, Loretta decides that self-care requires discipline, commitment, and self-love. Will she reach her health and economic goals?

The story is told through Loretta's eyes all throughout. While I found her humor and frankness tickling, I also found myself yearning to get out of Loretta's head. I would have liked to get other character's perspective, especially since there were so many. Perhaps Loretta's sister and at least one of her friends. Maybe even her husband's point of view would've been refreshing.

Also, there was a lot going on in other people's lives that Loretta tells you about but it would've been nice to go along for the ride and experience some of those things with the characters instead of having Loretta narrate them. This slowed down the story and I found myself skipping pages and pages of narratives. I hoped it would get better somewhere in the middle and that it would pick up steam after the tragedy. It never did.

Towards the end, Loretta makes all the right decisions. Suddenly, her son in Japan appears for the first time (it seems) after being mentioned on a few occasions. It concludes in a way that shows you life still goes on no matter what. A good message, but it took a long time getting there. I found myself at the bottom of the hill looking up and feeling glad the long journey was over with.

You can always rely on Terry to write about strong, black women and their complex friendships and family dynamics. Lo's life takes a serious turn early on in this novel and we all would hope for some of her relationships to heal a broken heart. Great beach read!

Whenever Terry Macmillan releases a new novel I so look forward to ordering from Amazon. I know I ll never be disappointed. She's funny, frank and her characters are so real. A pleasure to read, and best read with a glass of wine, curled up on sofa, with nibbles to hand!!
Her writing is very contemporary. I would thoroughly recommend to everyone, even if it's not they're usual genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginning
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2023
I liked the start of this book - it drew me in and was engaging enough. After that though I have to say I did find it disappointing. I was expecting Loretha to find an exciting and inspirational new life or new start as she is only in her sixties when her husband dies suddenly and unexpectedly. I kept waiting for the adventure to begin. But this didn't happen. Perhaps it's a book that is more about family relationships and friendship than charting new paths.
