"...the book took young Vietnamese readers by surprise... a perfect balance of romance and kung fu." --Vietanh D Nguyen, Vietnamese board games pioneer.

Being Vietnamese and bilingual, it was strange to see that some characters had traditional names and some were translated into literal English. Additionally, the writing seldom goes into depth about the setting in which events take place. For all these reasons, the story felt less immersive than I would've liked to read. That said, I'm still invested in how it ends and have ordered the next installment.
If you love wuxia drama, you would enjoy this book, to some extent. But please be warned, if you cannot handle a cliffhanger ending, do not start 😭.
A little bit underdeveloped on the love line. Although it was love at first sight, it did felt rushed. At just 293 pages, it was an easy read; detailed; and captivating. After finish reading, it felt like I had only watched 10 episodes and need the rest of the 50 🤣.
Reminded me so much of The Bride of the Water God (maybe because of the illustration). The manhwa, not the wash out kdrama version one 👎.
This book was released in 2007. After 14 years now, no detail on a 2nd book (or maybe I just haven't look hard enough?) I am definitely torn.

Dong Tu and Obsidian are somewhat star-crossed, truly bemused lovers to be. However, what is refreshing about this love story is that their romance is never ALL the characters are, they are well rounded people... Or Poison Kings in Obsidian's case. With flaws and dreams and consequences to face.
Joined by a whole host of interesting and fascinating secondary characters, Dong Tu's sister and the mysterious Switch being my personal favourites, utterly fill the pages with life and just a little chaos that makes this a brilliant read.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone, but especially anyone looking for that first dip into translated fiction novels.

I was laughing a lot because the way the characters tease each other reminded me of when I would visit my best friend’s family and relatives. They were pretty relatable to me.
I hope there’s a Book 2 coming out soon! I’d really like to see more Asian writers. I hope other people have enjoyed this book as well as I have and I’m looking forward to more!!!
The romance was very one dimensional and the dialogue sounded very teen-like which didn't suit the time period or setting.
There were some nice descriptive passages but overall it probably isn't worth the read.
