I enjoyed the paced it was a combo of waves at some points I would get distracted but then something funny or interesting would happen or then the main couple would finally pop up , JUST ORDERED PT 2 !! Can’t wait to see how it ends 🥺 would definitely watch if it became a drama or anime ~

A very fun and quick read! The weight between the main characters is offset wonderfully between the comedic and antagonistic characters.

Overall, I found this book easy to read and got through it in one evening. The story started off strong but most of the characters felt one/two dimensional and fell into classic tropes (overly jealous women, arrogant men.) There are a lot of characters and we're given plenty of backstories but I felt like the rationale for their present-day actions and choices are underdeveloped and often unfocused.
Being Vietnamese and bilingual, it was strange to see that some characters had traditional names and some were translated into literal English. Additionally, the writing seldom goes into depth about the setting in which events take place. For all these reasons, the story felt less immersive than I would've liked to read. That said, I'm still invested in how it ends and have ordered the next installment.

I'm usually not one for fantasy but this was rich with descriptions that weren't deep and aching to be impressive. They felt quite real, and romantic. Even reading martial arts felt "light". The characters were so very well developed. Like other readers, Obsidian won my heart, truly a tortured character you cheer for. I'm glad to have read this not long after the long-awaited release of Book 2

This is a short book (about 3 or so hours to read), but the story is fantastic. I loved the different characters and the way the author weaves it together. You can figure out the plots rather quickly, but I liked that. It helped spur me along in reading it.

I absolutely loved this book. I usually give a book at least the first 100 pages before I decide it's a keeper. I read the first few pages on kindle and knew I had to have the physical copy. I love the story, the characters that are more than meet the eye. The imagery is magical. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

What can I say?? My heart is now in half 💔.
If you love wuxia drama, you would enjoy this book, to some extent. But please be warned, if you cannot handle a cliffhanger ending, do not start 😭.

A little bit underdeveloped on the love line. Although it was love at first sight, it did felt rushed. At just 293 pages, it was an easy read; detailed; and captivating. After finish reading, it felt like I had only watched 10 episodes and need the rest of the 50 🤣.

Reminded me so much of The Bride of the Water God (maybe because of the illustration). The manhwa, not the wash out kdrama version one 👎.

This book was released in 2007. After 14 years now, no detail on a 2nd book (or maybe I just haven't look hard enough?) I am definitely torn.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning entrance into Vietnamese mythology!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2021
I am a big fan of Translation fiction, and this novel did not disappoint. It was an interesting, fast paced story that was engaging and thought provoking, through its characters, dialogue and the hard work of both author and translators to bring "The Girl Who Kept Winter" to English speaking readers.

Dong Tu and Obsidian are somewhat star-crossed, truly bemused lovers to be. However, what is refreshing about this love story is that their romance is never ALL the characters are, they are well rounded people... Or Poison Kings in Obsidian's case. With flaws and dreams and consequences to face.

Joined by a whole host of interesting and fascinating secondary characters, Dong Tu's sister and the mysterious Switch being my personal favourites, utterly fill the pages with life and just a little chaos that makes this a brilliant read.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone, but especially anyone looking for that first dip into translated fiction novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book!

I grew up in a Vietnamese neighborhood and my best friend was Vietnamese. She recently passed away and I was feeling pretty down until I came across this book as a suggested read.

I was laughing a lot because the way the characters tease each other reminded me of when I would visit my best friend’s family and relatives. They were pretty relatable to me.

I hope there’s a Book 2 coming out soon! I’d really like to see more Asian writers. I hope other people have enjoyed this book as well as I have and I’m looking forward to more!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me

Personally the writing level was a lot more simple than I expected and it reminded me a lot of a YA fanfiction. Most scenes seemed really rushed and the main relationship seemed flat to me; it really struggled to keep my attention.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2021
Such a good premise but it's like it's written by a child. Words from the Poison King describing Dong Tu as "cute" and "not pretty" and cycling around those two descriptions endlessly. The characters are super childish and have major issues with consent. The writing is terrible and the whole thing seemed like a joke

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really worth the read
Reviewed in Japan on May 4, 2021
A very young teenager might enjoy it, but as an adult I found the plot very simple and unsatisfying. The characters would "not notice" or "suddenly notice" things and people as it suited, to move the story along.
The romance was very one dimensional and the dialogue sounded very teen-like which didn't suit the time period or setting.
There were some nice descriptive passages but overall it probably isn't worth the read.
