“A sleek, beautiful book with a quietly serious heart.” —
The New York Times

From the bestselling, World Fantasy Award-winning author of
Witchmark comes a sweeping, romantic new fantasy set in a world reminiscent of Regency England, where women’s magic is taken from them when they marry. A sorceress must balance her desire to become the first great female magician against her duty to her family.

Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress who practices magic in secret, terrified of the day she will be locked into a marital collar that will cut off her powers to protect her unborn children. She dreams of becoming a full-fledged Magus and pursuing magic as her calling as men do, but her family has staked everything to equip her for Bargaining Season, when young men and women of means descend upon the city to negotiate the best marriages. The Clayborns are in severe debt, and only she can save them, by securing an advantageous match before their creditors come calling.

In a stroke of luck, Beatrice finds a grimoire that contains the key to becoming a Magus, but before she can purchase it, a rival sorceress swindles the book right out of her hands. Beatrice summons a spirit to help her get it back, but her new ally exacts a price: Beatrice’s first kiss . . . with her adversary’s brother, the handsome, compassionate, and fabulously wealthy Ianthe Lavan.

The more Beatrice is entangled with the Lavan siblings, the harder her decision becomes: If she casts the spell to become a Magus, she will devastate her family and lose the only man to ever see her for who she is; but if she marries—even for love—she will sacrifice her magic, her identity, and her dreams. But how can she choose just one, knowing she will forever regret the path not taken?

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for sending me a free eARC in exchange of an honest review. This book has intrigued me, not only because of its pretty cover, but I was really into the premise of the story. It involves a world wherein women gifted with magic are showcased during a “Bargaining Season” in order to attract the wealthiest and most influential families, looking to breed magic into their bloodline or just expanding their horizons. It’s the season of arranged marriages. In this fantasy world, magic is common and men are required to be have settled down before they take the final step of being full pledge Magi. The women have it difficult, though, since in Chasland, women were required to be locked up in collars as soon as they marry. They only have a choice between staying unmarried and, therefore, a disgrace to their family in order to pursue their magic, or be married and only get to remove that collar, and their magic, 10 years after they last bled.I love the themes that the book has: from fighting the injustice for women, as well as social inequality, this book was so much more than I hoped for!I loved how Beatrice and Ysbeta developed from rival ingenues (the eligible ladies during the Bargaining Season) to the best of friends. It was a real treat to see them grow together. Another thing I loved about their characters was how they stood firm about what they want and what they believe in. Their loyalty is also something I greatly admired. And then, there’s the romance. Ladies and gentlemen, let me welcome another book boyfriend to the mix: Ianthe Lavan, you are a gem 😍See, the romance trope in the book was the insta love kind of thing, and I usually shun those books or just not enjoy them as much. But that’s because most books I’ve read with said trope was it just plateaus. The relationship doesn’t develop or level up. This one, though, they grew together, and just continues to make my blood boil!“I love you. And if I have to choose between you, fully within your destiny, or a son to continue the traditions that depended on keeping you diminished, I choose you”Beatrice and Ianthe are just so good for each other! Real OTP levels of kilig and relationship goals. He was ready to give up everything for her and he was willing to walk away if magic really was her happiness😭And Ianthe is just so swoon worthy 🥰 “I can’t reason when I’m near you. Time flies like a thief when you’re by my side, so much that I want a spell that slows the turning of the globe just for more time with you. Every time I see you, I am awed by you, delighted by you, comforted and moved by you. I am a greedy man, and I want every moment there is to have with you. I want to marry you, Beatrice Amara Clayborn.”So for all the hype you’ve read, why wasn’t I rating this as a five star read? There was a part towards the end of the book and between the epilogue that just seemed rushed for me. If it were a couple of pages longer, then the dynamics would have been given a chance to settle in and blow out my mind. That being said, the ending wrapped it up perfectly. The loose ends were are polished, and the open ended last line actually adds to the appeal of the book. It made me want more of it and I look forward to any sequel (if there are any) planned.

Oh my my!!! This was a discovery.

I liked the plot, I liked the pace, I liked the writing, but most of all, I loved the theme. This was feminist to the core. This book depicts fantasy but reflects the reality like the clearest mirror. The author is someone I would like to meet and thank personally, for capturing the essence of being a woman in a patriarchal society.
Part of the story she wrote, burned with memory within my skin. A woman begging a man for her basic right. Same man who is supposed to care for her, love her, protect her. She has to beg and plead with this man to be allowed to find her child. But a prospective male fetus has more rights than this poor woman.
I loved this reflection on the abortion ban. Those collars reminded me of how little control women have over their bodies. Men in congress/chapter houses gets to decide women's fate and their choices. Men who can't bear a responsibility of a reversible procedure or birth control, because of their own enjoyment and gain. Men who think they are progressives when they think they allow their women liberties, while forgetting what basic human rights are.
Women have been treated nothing more then an incubator with legs. Objects that exist to please men or produce more men. Brood mares to advance society. This book takes all this bitterness and flings it back at society.

This book is a subversion of toxic stereotypes. There is a beautiful female friendship. A suppressed woman who tries everything in her power to save her daughters. The romance with substance and male lead who is definitely swoon worthy.

I loved Nadi, Beatrice and Ysbeta, such powerful phenomenal women! I admire their ambition, their gumption, their resolve and their determination. I aspire to be as amazing as them!

Also, a woman gets to punch a man in the mouth and break his teeth 😍😍😍😱 this is like a balm on my soul.

Please anyone reading in this endless void of the World Wide Web! Read this and feel it plug the bleeding holes that the patriarchy has cast in your soul! (For a few minutes*)

P.S. Representation 😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️⭐️⭐️

This is a novel of fantasy, feminism, frocks, and flirtation. It combines a strong dose of Jane Austen (one of the towns is even named Meryton, just as in Pride and Prejudice) with a generous dollop of magic. It succeeds in this well enough to have been nominated for the Nebula Award for the best fantasy novel of 2020.

I found it a fun, fast reading pleasure. I liked Beatrice, the heroine, and, among the supporting cast, I especially liked Nadi. The resolution is adroitly managed and pleasing. Spoilers ahead. While I very much enjoyed Ivanthe, the romantic interest, I note that he's no Mr. Darcy. Where Mr. Darcy riveted me with his initial arrogance, Ivanthe was sweet from the start. N.B. It delighted me that Polk clearly establishes that Ivanthe is dark-skinned and strikingly handsome.

Two other notes. Firstly, I found the heroine's father sufficiently repellent that I was rooting for him NOT to reconcile with the heroine at the end. Secondly, I wished Clara had been given a little more space in the novel, and, in particular, that we'd seen Beatrice being kinder to her early on.

Thoroughly enjoyable. 4 out of 5 beautifully-dressed stars.

In Chasland, marriage means a warded collar that stifles a sorceress’s magic to nothingness, all in the name of protecting the woman. An unwarded married female could become pregnant and a spirit could inhabit the child before it became ensouled. Beatrice wants to be a mage, but her family’s survival depends on her marrying well. Without a favorable marriage, the mortgage her father took out will come due; not only will her family be homeless but the scandal will cost her sister, Harriet, any chance at a season and a match. Beatrice is sure that if she’s able to become a mage, her father will relent and all will be well.

Her search for a grimoire that will aid in her quest has her crossing paths with Ysbeta and Ianthe Yavan, 2 very rich Llanandarians in town for the season. What starts as a grudging friendship with Ysy soon becomes sisterhood as the both work to become mages before the collar clamps shut.

This is a great novel about sisterhood and empowerment. Both women want their freedom and they also can’t stomach it not happening for both of them. They support rather than sabotage each other. They take risks for each other and comfort the other when painful things happen. Because of their commitment to each other, the pair are able to persevere in the face of what looks like defeat and end up happy in the end. Their ending isn’t exactly what they expected, but it’s both encouraging and satisfying.

The novel proclaims the feminist beat without being preachy or obnoxious. Beatrice’s arguments to keep her magic are reasonable and her struggle over the choice of her dreams versus marriage and love is well done. Her love interest, Ianthe, is the best kind of hero because he’s handsome, dashing, and not threatened by Beatrice being an empowered woman. Rather, he’s charmed by Beatrice’s audacity to have her own opinion about things, even when it contradicts his own. Never once does he take her hesitancy to marry or her ideas of what a sorceress should be able to do as an insult or threat to his manhood. He actually listens, considers and alters his opinions when he realizes that they don’t conform to his convictions about the place of women in society. While Ysy’s parents are pushing her to marry, Ianthe works to find a way she can escape an unwanted fate. He also loves Beatrice enough to help her even when it means possibly losing her.

The story took a bit to get going, but once it did, it had me to the last page. I’d love to see what happen pens next for them, but the story doesn’t feel unfinished. I definitely am glad I read it. 4.5 stars out of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars a very enjoyable read
Reviewed in Canada on November 8, 2021
This novel took me a bit to finish, but I’m so glad I kept reading. The beginning was a little slow and at points I felt that the dialogue and characters were stiff, but at cinching moments the writing seemed to completely open up. I finished the last 50 percent over the course of a day and a half. Again the last few chapter moved faster than I would have liked. All things considered the world was incredibly vivid and the magic systems unique. I actually would have liked to see more on the spirits and hope this is included in future books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Regency-esque secondary world with racial diversity, magic and feminism
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2022
Regency-esque secondary world with racial diversity and magic; a world where the study of magic is essentially a men's club and women are expected (forced) to give up magic when they marry. There's a distinct thread of romance but it never feels like the focus of the book. This is *far* more interested in its heroine's feminist fight to escape being stripped of her magic. The society is well drawn, a steel trap closing in on the heroine, who is defiant and risk-taking in her efforts to escape it. Indeed she feels so profoundly doomed, her happy-ever-after so genuinely unattainable, that despite (or because of) the story being very well-written I found it quite a stressful read until the eventual happy ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Regency + Magic
Reviewed in Canada on February 21, 2021
When I was 12 or 13, I discovered my mother’s trove of Georgette Heyer Regency novels and I dove right in, unaware of the sexual politics underlying the stories. Decades later we have C. L. Polk’s “The Midnight Bargain,” a sort-of Regency YA fantasy that is all about sexual politics. Beatrice is the 18-year-old daughter of a banking family, not rich but respectable, who must participate in Bargaining Season, where the scions of the mid- and upper classes choose their mates; but in this world, some men and women have magic. Because this magic involves summoning and controlling beings from the spirit realm, who are powerful but very greedy for physical experiences, women with magic are at risk of having a spirit enter the fetus of any child they carry, resulting in mass destruction. So women are “warded” during their child-bearing years, which cuts them off completely from magic and which makes it impossible for them to reach their full magical potential. Beatrice has the makings of being a very powerful mage indeed, but she needs to marry well to save her family’s fortunes; those competing desires are only complicated when she meets the Lavan siblings, very beautiful, very rich and very magical…. I like the world-building here, but I found our main character quite off-putting: she is so polemical in her constant arguments about the unfairness of “the system” that I just got annoyed with her. Of course the system is unfair, of course women are devalued and, essentially, enslaved - we get it, already! Then again, as a book meant for teenage readers (I assume), perhaps that much ranting and raving is to be expected. I’ll definitely read more of this author as I find stories, because “The Midnight Bargain” is well written; I’ll just hope future stories are a bit more in the “show, not tell” vein.
