NATIONAL BESTSELLER • One of our most visceral and important memoirs on race in America, this is the story of Nathan McCall, who began life as a smart kid in a close, protective family in a black working-class neighborhood.

Yet by the age of fifteen, McCall was packing a gun and embarking on a criminal career that five years later would land him in prison for armed robbery.

In these pages, McCall chronicles his passage from the street to the prison yard—and, later, to the newsrooms of
The Washington Post and ultimately to the faculty of Emory University. His story is at once devastating and inspiring, at once an indictment and an elegy. Makes Me Wanna Holler became an instant classic when it was first published in 1994 and it continues to bear witness to the great troubles—and the great hopes—of our nation.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

McCall's autobiography?a seven-week PW bestseller?tracks his trajectory from the streets of Portsmouth, Va., to prison, rehabilitation and a job at the Washington Post; features a new introduction by the author.

Review

"Not since Claude Brown's Manchild in the Promised Land has there been such an honest and searching look at the perils of growing up a black male in urban America....A compelling depiction of the toll that racism and misguided notions of manhood have taken in the life of one black man–and, by implication, many others."–The San Francisco Chronicle

As a Caucasian Man, having moved from Paris France to an Iowa college in the mid 70 s . I needed to educate myself in race relations which was shockingly different between both countries especially growing up in a racial diverse environment. We never introduced a buddy by the color of their skin only by name or country, instead of using African American we would differentiate he or she is from Senegal and so forth.. my first week in College I remembered that I tried to sit in a table during lunch and did not realize it was for African American only and was asked to sit elsewhere. I became confused and was very naive then. Then forgot about the incident but became keenly aware of the institutional differentiations amongst races. And as a prelude to at least grasp these racial prejudices I happened to have read a wonderful biography written by Condoleeza Rice called: Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family, As well as the book hidden figure by Margot Lee Shetterly showing the immeasurable stark contrasts of the lives of African Americans in the 50 s . This book focuses on the plight of African American Males in the US. This book convincingly demonstrated the Vicissitudes a Black male in the USA. has to go through after becoming a man! A very powerful read which offers a glimmer of hope! I love how he uses musical lyrics as an image to bring his points across! Great read!

I read Nathan's book based on a recommendation as I am on a journey to expand my understanding of different communities and in this case a slice of the black experience. I had just completed Ameer Baraka's book, "The Life I Chose, The Streets Lied to Me." These are similar experiences separated by geography and time. And both very alien to my own. The recognition of the importance of Nathan's story is well documented. It helped me on my journey of understanding. My ultimate goal is to help reveal the link between learning disabilities and the path to prison. These biographies help illuminate the environment that supports this common path. I hope to help change the paradigm of understanding on how our schools and teachers can identify those with learning disabilities and provide effective instruction. We, the learning disabled, are not lazy. We, struggle to read. And shoving the same words the say way won't change that fact. Effective reading instruction is not just a hope, it is a civil rights issue and we need to employ structured literacy as part of the solution to teach all readers, particularly struggling readers.

An eye-opening autobiography of Nathan McCall who is no less special than any other black men in America. Starting with his childhood, he takes us on his journey through a string of events that shook his life and self-reflections and actions he took in response. There was never a static moment in his narrative; we were shown how every one of his experiences shaped and changed his perspectives throughout his time in both the prison and the system set up against black progress. His recounting of events had me rooting for him, crying with him, and cheering him on throughout his crazy up and downturns.

I initially (very wrongly) presumed this book would just turn out to be a seemingly blind hate and protest against white America. But the narrative holds straightforward truth and a self-critical voice that I came to admire. It not only expanded my perspectives but also gave me strength to confront my personal battles. I’m thankful to have come across Nathan McCall’s story.

Whether you admire or despise the author, this is an outstanding book. I bought it for my library (large international school in Switzerland) and read it when it first came out in the early 90's. It moved me in a way few books ever have, and I read a lot. I've just re-read it (March 2008) and it is as powerful to me now as it was over a decade ago.

Lots of reviews on amazon judge this author one way or another, but I leave it to the reader to think critically and honestly about the book's message.

I just purchasd this book for my current library (large school in Hong Kong). I recommend it for high schools as the issues of adolescence and personal growth are very relevant to teens, it supports humanities curriculum and introduces debate on human rights, civil rights, racism, responsibility, and much more. I especially recommend it for public libraries in North America as everyone at some point has encountered dilemmas and frustrations such as McCall's (though perhaps not for the same reason or in the same situation). His message is so powerfully positive and hopeful and so brilliantly written, that this is one of my all-time favorite books.
