“Bold, brutal, and making no compromises—Morgan doesn’t so much twist the clichés of fantasy as take an axe to them.”—Joe Abercrombie

A dark lord will rise.

Such is the prophecy that dogs Ringil Eskiath—Gil, for short—a washed-up mercenary and onetime war hero whose cynicism is surpassed only by the speed of his sword. Gil is estranged from his aristocratic family, but when his mother enlists his help in freeing a cousin sold into slavery, Gil sets out to track her down. But it soon becomes apparent that more is at stake than the fate of one young woman. Grim sorceries are awakening in the land. Some speak in whispers of the return of the Aldrain, a race of widely feared, cruel yet beautiful demons. Now Gil and two old comrades are all that stand in the way of a prophecy whose fulfillment will drown an entire world in blood. But with heroes like these, the cure is likely to be worse than the disease.

Praise for The Steel Remains

“The award-winning author of
Altered Carbon and Market Forces brings the same iconoclastic approach to his fantasy debut as he did to his sf technothrillers. . . . [Richard K.] Morgan’s storytelling talent and his atmospheric, hard-hitting prose make this a strong addition to mature fantasy collections.”Library Journal

“Spellbinding . . . There’s so much to like about the adventure.”
The Star-Ledger

“Morgan has taken traditional sword and sorcery tropes and given them a hard, contemporary kick. The antithesis of the cosy fairytale, this one is for big boys.”
The Times (London)

“[A] dark, gritty tale . . . The well-developed characters and realistic battle scenes ring true.”

It is now being turned into a 10 episode Netflix series by Skydance Media. Market Forces, was also optioned to Warner Bros, before it was even published, and it won the John W. I've read so many appropriate reviews of this, I really just wanted to add my star rating. But since I can't do that...I'll review!

I loved this book. It was such an unexpected breath of fresh air--searing, burning air, but fresh. I bought it because I read a lot of m/m romance and erotica, and I knew there was lots of gay in this book. But gay romance this is NOT. That's already obvious from the other reviews. I can honestly say there's not any of what I'd call romance in this novel (almost, but not quite), of any persuasion, and that's unusual in in the fantasy genre. The sex was well-done and tone-appropriate to the story, though. I was sad that one character was left kind of high and dry, but that was also part of the characterization and, so, story-appropriate.

Other things that were so original: the 'heroes' are older characters who have already established themselves; a totally different take on magic and traditional fantasy races; sci-fi elements; no black and white but LOTS of dark gray; and a veritable wallowing in violence. I hated the drugs, but they were, unfortunately, completely appropriate in the milieu and probably won't bother most people. If, like me, you are really bothered by them, I can say that nothing truly awful happens with them, and it's easy enough to substitute 'a large dose of caffeine' for 'krin' and and the effects are pretty-much the same. The anticipation was worse than the actuality. If I ever reread this book, I won't worry about them at all.

I thought the writing was searingly vivid and accomplished. The characterization was also really well-done, but Archeth and Egar's characters don't get the kind of resolution that Ringil does. I hope that means we get more of them in the next book.

I've never read anything else of Mr. Morgan's but he is obviously very talented. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and hope we see these characters again. If you are used to slash and m/m genre fiction like I am, I'd say this is much, much darker (even than standard slave-fic and torture-fic that's common in the m/m world) but with much less overt rape. It's just the world itself and its truths that is so very dark--like the real world, without a single glimpse of love.

This is the opening volume in a fantasy trilogy. There will be spoilers ahead. It's a book that shifted as I read it. The beginning had a snarky cleverness indicated by the first sentence: "When a man you know to be of sound mind tells you his recently deceased mother has just tried to climb in his bedroom window and eat him, you have only two options." And at first I thought this would be a witty, dark-edged, but not unsettling read. Before very long, I realized it would be a less comfortable story. There's an inherent brutality and unpleasantness in much fantasy, but normally authors step back from this a little, softening the effect. This book is rawer than usual. Plus there are disconcertingly nasty aspects to even the heroes/heroines, such as -- second spoiler warning -- how one of them had once killed a child in a fit of rage.

By about halfway through, even though I admired much of the storytelling, even though I was caught up by it, I wasn't precisely enjoying the book. And I think that's partly because the main point-of-view characters weren't deeply attached to anyone around them. They had lovers, or family, or colleagues, or people they had called friends, but their only strong affections seemed to be for people years in their past. And so -- spoilers for the latter part of the book ahead -- I was very glad when the three main threads finally came together, and the characters, who had known each other years ago, met up in time for the climactic battle. Just before the chapter detailing that battle, the chief hero, Ringil, gave a speech that went a long way toward redeeming his character in my judgmental eyes.

Until the last sixth of this book, I'd have ranked it as just above average for the fantasy I read. Bear in mind that I am trying to pick books I'll enjoy, so that is a reasonably high standard. By the time I'd reached the end, the book had climbed in my estimation, and I am planning to read the next installment soon.

Richard Morgan si conferma un genio, bellissime atmosfere cupe e violente, bellissimo il senso di frustrazione e rancore dei protagonisti. L'unica pecca è l'ambientazione, non molto organica. Da leggere.
