Publisher's summary

Out in the darkness of space, something is targeting the Greatships.

With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species.

It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

All it took, to make her way onto the crew of the Greatship Athens, was thousands of hours in simulators, dedication and pawning or selling every scrap of her old life in order to forge a new one. But though she's made her way onboard with faked papers, leaving her old life - and scandals - behind isn't so easy.

She may have just combined all the dangers of her former life, with all the perils of the new....

Another great series

This is the 3rd series I have read or listened to by Miles Cameron. Right now he is my favorite author, great writing as a whole. I usually have a hard time with books with female main lead but after starting to listen to this one I had a hard time putting it down. Very well performed by Nneka as well. I am a bit sad to hear that there will only be one more sequel but I look forward to it regardless. The characters he creates are very real with their own quirks and strengths. This one had a unique twist of tramatic struggles that was a bold move. So far it puts on a back drop for a strong character who overcomes the evils of society and her past. A unique take on action and the challenges of space as well.

Masterful in every detail: story & performance

This book came to life for me from the early pages. The narrator speaks the thoughts and actions of the protagonist and becomes her. The world of military culture, honed in the forge of medieval sword craft epic, is perfectly laid out as we are led into battle and find ourselves at the doorstep to an interspecies, pan-galactic saga of gritty detail and epic scope without ever losing touch with characters we care about.

It isn't made clear until the very ending that this is the first in a series. That's my only gripe. The next book even has a title — but you have to listen until the end to find out what it is!

Great book, well worth the ride, with a payoff that will keep me tapping in. Found on a fluke — liked the title. Extra, extra shout out to the narrator: she deserves a long career as well.

Sweeping space opera with empathetic characters

Narration was superb and perfectly matched the central character. Felt really invested in the characters and it stung whenever bad things happened to them. Really looking forward to next book, hopefully with same reader.

A Pleasing & Fun Departure into Sci-Fi - Recommend

This is straight up, almost retro sci-fi book. Although I enjoy Mr. Cameron's more sword-based works--this is more "Navy-in-Space" fun. Great characters. Great combat and procedural sequences abound. The premise of a young, hardscrabble woman starting out her military career as a midshipman is not a new plot device....but the universe created and the sophistication of the issues confronted create a breath of fresh air in a genre that sees to many derivative stories. While It may border on YA, the underlying plot, particularly the antagonists, takes it up a couple of levels. (For fans, there is TASTE of sword work.) Also, I particularly enjoyed the performance.....It reminds me of "The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer" by Neal Stephenson, one of the best narrations ever.

Excellent voicing, terrible pacing

The narrator has a gift for voicing the characters and would be a pleasure to listen to if not for her inability to take breaks between paragraphs. New ideas need a pause before moving forward to delineate a change of subject, but the narrator reads as if it’s all one really long run-on sentence. It partially ruined what I’d consider a good book.
