Product Description

Soft Arkansas (Medium): This is used to establish and maintain a sharp edge on cutting tools. Since this is a natural stone colors may include Grey, White, Black/Grey, Grey/Pink, Black/White, White or White/Pink, or a combination of these colors. Genuine Arkansas stones are 100% quarried in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. They are highly sought after worldwide for their superior ability to sharpen knives and woodworking tools, as well as to put quality edges on a wide variety of instruments Arkansas Novaculite stones produce these fine edges s with less wear on your blade than manmade stones. Dan's Arkansas Stones are classified as Novaculite, which is extremely hard and fine grained crystalline structure rock containing almost pure silica. These stones are classified in 4 grades and progress from Soft to Hard to Translucent and finally to Black. Each grade is based on the specific gravity or density of the mineral and not the grit or particle size. The grades with more dense or tightly packed particles will produce a finer or sharper edge. In addition, stone grades are not determined by color, as color alone will not differentiate the hardness of different stone grades. Each grade may contain any of the following colors: black, charcoal, grey, white, multi-color, brown, pink or red, or a combination of these colors in a single stone. These stones come in a leather pouch to protect them when not in use. All Arkansas stones work best with a light mineral honing oil to suspend the metal particles produced by the sharpening process which prevents clogging of the pores of the stone.

Not as good as they used to be
I purchased several of Dans Whetstones in 2016 and they are awesome, first class stones. Cut perfectly with sharp edges at exactly 45 degrees ,all surfaces are perfectly flat and all corners come to a sharp point.I am using these older stones strictly for gunsmithing. Now in 2020 I purchased another (soft/medium) for knives and a hatchet while camping. I don't know if I got a bad one or the stones are now cut different but all the edges on it are beveled and corners are not squared. This is fine for blades or polishing flats for trigger jobs (like hammer / sear sides) but useless for certain smithing where you need that perfect 45 degree angle for things like smoothing and polishing hammer hooks. The sheath quality is also now lacking. Used to be a nice dark and supple leather. New sheaths are off white, thinner and feel like plastic. Even the stitching has been cheaped out. The stitching does not go far enough up the sides and the stone slips out easily. What are they trying to do , save a penny on thread for every 10 sheaths made? Dropping rating to 4 stars, it's still a good stone for the money, just not what they used to be. I wish the price went up and the quality remained the same. Remember to check out the bevels on the newer stone in the photo.

This is the second arkansas stone I baught this year, and the texture looks like it’s recycled dust epoxyed together, the material is arkansas stone but not the real deal. The picture is showing what you could get 2 years back for the same price, a 4" x 1 5/8" x 1/2" real stone. The add is accurate, I didn’t took care of the size because I taught it would be the same being a Dan’s, but just like the last I baught, a Smith’s, its composition look cheaper and it’s less than half the size, for the same price, i’m disappointed.
