About the Author

Dan Calley has been a professional voice-over artist for over twelve years. He's voiced many projects, from advertisements to documentaries to audiobooks to character work on his award-winning cult comedy sitcom podcast, where he not only voices over ten different characters, but edits, sound designs, and produces the whole thing. He also did stand-up for ten years, reaching the BBC New Comedy Award final in 2011. Since then he's also been an actor, recently starring in the Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. He currently has over forty audiobooks under his belt and has managed to build a tidy following through his narration work. As such, Dan has recently been nominated for two Goodreads M/M Romance Members' Choice Awards: best audiobook narration of the year for Garrett Leigh's Redemption and all-time favorite m/m narrator.

Jane Adams, PhD, has been chronicling the lives of American families for over two decades in ten books and numerous columns, articles, and essays. I am the author of more than forty published crime novels. The first, The Greenway, was nominated for both the Authors’ club award and the CWA John Creasey for best debut novel.

I’m constantly amazed at where life has taken me. Writing had never been on my ‘possible careers’ list, but once stories take root in your brain, they just have to be told - and I feel very fortunate that people want to read them.

I have written several series featuring DI MIke Croft, Ex DI Ray Flowers, amateur sleuth Rina Martin, Ex DS Naomi Blake, Merrow and Clarke, Rozlyn Priest and, a series set in the 1920s, featuring DCI Henry Johnstone and DS Mickey Hitchens, plus several standalone novels

In addition to writing I teach creative writing, read and mentor for The Literary Consultancy, am a Royal Literary Fund Fellow and FRSA.

Ms. Adams is a skilled writer who creates interesting characters and who definitely does her research! I quickly got past the idea that I was reading a paranormal story and just enjoyed the read as both a detective story and a historical fiction read! I hope to read more of Jane Adams' work!

The past & present collide. Ray knows that he needs to decide what to do. He needs this time to figure out he needs to do next with his life. He has found a new reason to get up every morning but the more he learns about Kitty the more he knows that he has to find out what happened to her. And in doing so maybe he can find a way forward from the past. A good read. Ray is a good man that didn't deserve what happened to him and I am glad that he has found someone that makes him happy.

This story begins in the 1600’s with a woman named Kitty. Kitty was haunting her old house and the previous owner just accepted the ghost as a visitor. The nephew inherited the cottage and began researching the history of Kitty’s death.
I very interesting story reflecting the time period of witches being put to death. The book also covers the crime against Ray which brings more surprise to the book.

This was a well-written story. I liked the fantasy mixed with modern-day crime and corruption. so the author held my interest from start to finish. There were two stories intertwined with 350 years between them, but, for me, it worked well. The 'hero' was not handsome, so it was heartwarming to know there are people who can look beyond the physical aspects of a person and appreciate their other qualities. I will be buying the next in the series, although this was a stand-alone book.
p.s. I came on here to write a review rather than simply leave a rating on my Kindle.

I absolutely loved this book and would have gladly given it 10 stars if I had been able to. I have been a fan of Jane Adams for some time now, having read all her previous books. The description for this book was so interesting, I was keen to read it. It many ways it was very similar to another favourites of mine - Barbara Erskine - whose books I love. It has a touch of mystery, lots of history and is a chilling, psychological thriller. The story is both complex and fascinating. DI Ray Flowers is recovering from a deadly attack, resulting in the burning of his hands and face, leaving disfiguring scars. He is in the process of moving into a cottage left to him by an elderly aunt Mathilda, upon her death. He discovers her journals and starts to read with fascination, intrigued in the references to her visitor. In the meantime, he is driven to try and find out who attacked him, and starts to ask unwanted questions. On the face of it, this seems like any normal crime novel and the story is interesting enough but then, gradually things turn mysterious and really start to grab my attention.

This is a chilling tale of historical misdeeds. It is full of fear and horror, and has many twists along the way. Throughout the book we are reading about two different time periods, to begin with these are separated out quite considerably, but gradually they are brought together and there are some parts where you start to forget which era you are reading about, as the characters start to co-exist. I found it incredibly hard to put this book down and in places became quite emotionally involved in the lives of both Ray and Kitty. The ending was both sad and unexpected and left me wanting more.

This is a story of romance, crime and witchcraft and I loved every minute of it. It made a wonderful Christmas read and kept me totally absorbed in these troubled times. I hope that Jane Adams writes more of her fascinating stories and I look forward to reading more about Ray Flowers.

Bought this book as it was on offer and sounded interesting. I actually really enjoyed it as it had a bit of history, a bit of modern crime and a bit of romance. It's not a long book but I got quite engrossed and was intrigued to find out the ending(s). The title is probably a bit misleading as it sounds historical but that is only part of it. Just read it and you'll see what I mean!

A decent enough crime novel but let down by a parallel narrative, set in the 17th century, whose main character interacted with characters in the present. A female virgin ghost having sexual intercourse with a present-day policeman, leaving physical evidence of a broken hymen?? Ludicrous to say the least, and a cheap literary device. The ghost’s own story, a sorry tale of false accusation, was interesting and moving, though the novel perpetrated its own falsehood: a grossly exaggerated figure regarding “witches” executed during that era. The actual figure is bad enough—why increase it from thousands to millions? Wake up, editor!
