Then I read about these Sennheiser 840's. They are more expensive than the TV Ears, but the reviews were very good. I didn't want to spend this much money, so I kept reading reviews for a few weeks, hoping to find a cheaper solution. I finally just bought these after searching for the best price.
Pro's
First, the 840's has very good sound, dialogue is easy to understand. My father laughs and reacts to TV much more when wearing these than when listening on even the fancy Dialogue speaker I purchased, so I know he can hear better with these on. It has a large volume knob on the front of the unit that is easy for my father to adjust. Despite being an in-the-ear style design like a stethoscope, it's more comfortable than an over the ear style headphone. It automatically turns on when put on the head and turns off when taken off. It recharges while sitting on the base, but it also has a removable battery. There is a slot on the side to charge a second battery, which is handy when my father sits there watching TV for 8-10 hours or more (with exercise breaks). The battery life is very good, at least 8 hours in constant use so we do not end up swapping batteries that often. The unit is very lightweight and not bulky. It's comfortable to wear in bed with your head on a pillow, unlike large regular headphones. It also has very good range, my father can get up and walk to the bathroom while listening to a movie or sporting event without missing anything. We haven't noticed a drop off in battery life in two years, maybe there has been one but not by much.
Con's
So those are all of the good things. The bad things or things that could improve would be, the ear covers can fall out. They are a soft rubber and it's easy to lose one if they do fall out. I bought a package of 20 to keep some on hand. In 2 years we've only lost 2 ear covers in the house, likely stuck somewhere in a chair cushion. Second, the battery, if you are going to swap it, is small, which is nice, but it's about the width of two postage stamps. For anyone with trouble handling small objects that might be a problem. But the battery is thick enough to be able to pick up easily. Third, official Sennheiser batteries are very expensive if you look to keep a second one. We bought a generic 3rd party brand for a second battery and haven't noticed any difference in battery life. And finally, it's not really a negative, but the cost is much higher on this than I was hoping to spend, but you get what you pay for. He's used this everyday for two years and it's still working great.
I can highly recommend this product. In this case, you truly do get what you pay for.
There are so many questions about this product that I thought I should write a review that answers most of them. This device consists of a headset and a base. The headset contains a removable battery that is supposed to last up to 9 hours. You charge the battery by putting the headset onto the base. You can buy a spare battery and put it in a slot on the base where it can charge at the same time the headset is charging. This means that you can swap out batteries every 9 hours (if you wear the headset for 9 hours at time) and keep on using the headset indefinitely. While the headset is advertised as being for listening to TV, you can connect it to almost any audio output, such as a stereo receiver, FM radio, etc. and listen over the headset. Because this is a radio frequency (RF) device, you don't have to be facing the base unit to listen; in fact, you can probably walk around you house or apartment until you find out how far you can go without losing the signal. To set up the unit, you power up the the base by plugging into an electrical outlet. Then you connect the base to the audio output of your TV, Stereo Receiver, etc. The audio output typically will be two RCA jacks, that are usually color coded Red and White. If you don't have these jacks, you might find a single mini jack, or some other jack that says "AUDIO OUT". The headset comes with some adapters so you should be able to connect it to any kind of audio output.
CAUTION: if your audio output is an optical output, you can't connect the base unless you buy an expensive converter.
What if you want to connect to a TV that has no audio output or that just has an optical output? If your TV is connected to a cable box, you can use the cable box audio output, because that is the same audio that is being delivered to the TV.
NOTE: If you connect to your cable box audio output, and you have a dvd player connected to the TV, you won't be able to listen to the DVD unless you take the connections off the cable box and move them to the DVD Player audio output If you want to avoid moving the cable, you can probably buy an inexpensive switch that you can connect to the Cable Box and the DVD player.
What if you have a TV with no audio out put and no cable box? Well, you can still use the headset because it comes with a small microphone. You plug the microphone into the base and position it near one of the speakers. I don't think you'll get a stereo signal anymore.
If someone who has difficulty hearing want's to use the headset as a hearing aid, you can plug in the microphone and use it to talk to that person. You might have to buy an extension cable for the microphone so that you can sit near the person who is wearing the headset instead of standing near the TV where the base unit is plugged into an electrical outlet.
There isn't any switch on the headset. It turns on automatically when you spread the earpieces apart to put them in your ears. They are comfortable enough for my 104 year old mom, and I find them comfortable enough (if my mother is 104 years old, then I'm no spring chicken either) so they should be ok for most people. There are 3 different ear plugs so you can find the one most comfortable for you.
If you care about audio quality, these are very good. they are stereo. They have a balance control so that you can adjust the sound to be equal in both ears. You can set them to stereo or mono. They have 3 modes of operation for speech intelligibility that you can set by a button on top of the base unit, including compression and treble boost. The base unit transmits an rf signal that the headset automatically detects. If the signal is weak or there is interference, you can chan switch to another channel until you find the best one. The volume control is a very large dial on the front of the headset, where it's easy to reach and turn.
Now that you know what to expect, if you buy this unit and you need help in making some adjustments, you know what it's supposed to do and you can easily find instructions in the manual.

I had read reviews and a few customers found the hanging transmitter a little heavy after many hours of use which was a concern for me as I could not use over the ear headphones for this very reason....in fact gave me earaches and headaches. I took a gamble and I do find them pretty comfortable and find after quite a few hours (if binge watching a series) I have to adjust them often or take a break for a bit. Overall I am very satisfied. I am even going back and re watching some series that I found were completely lost to me do to complete lack of understanding because of unintelligible speech (to my ears)....thanks Sennheiser. I recommend this set highly.
My mom is very hard of hearing, with ringing of the ears as well. With this product she was able to hear
the TV, which she enjoyed watching.
