All Aboard the London Bus

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is where all British monarchs have been crowned since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066. Over 3,000 people are buried at Westminster, including many kings and queens, and writers and artists in Poet’s Corner. One grave has no name on it: the grave of the Unknown Warrior contains the body of a soldier who died in France during the First World War. His tomb stands as a solemn reminder to all of the sacrifices made for one’s country.

Tea Time

The custom of British afternoon tea may have begun in the early 1800s. It is said that the 7th Duchess of Bedford had a ‘sinking feeling’ between her morning and evening meals. Her solution? A nice pot of tea and a snack in the afternoon. She invited friends to join her and the practice spread. Afternoon tea is often served with tiny sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and sweet pastries. Yum!

The Globe Theatre

William Shakespeare was a famous playwright and actor, and a partowner of the Globe. Some of his finest works, like Hamlet and Macbeth, were first performed there. The original Globe Theatre opened in 1599. In 1642 civil war broke out and all theatres were closed by government decree, so in 1644 the Globe was demolished. But in 1997 the rebuilt Globe opened – constructed from English oak, brick, and plaster – to introduce Shakespeare to millions.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—As a family of four spend the day sightseeing in London, each stop of the double-decker bus introduces readers to a new sight, as well as those London absolutes such as rain and a midday pause for tea. Each bus stop is given two pages, and landmarks are indicated with labels reminiscent of street signs, which are painted at the top of the left-hand page. One or more poems highlight each stop, and a variety of poetic forms, including rhyming couplets, limericks, and haiku, as well as changes in poem placement, keep the text fresh. Striking watercolor illustrations in a mix of full-bleed images, vignettes, and spreads complement the poetry, expanding upon the text and creating flow and rhythm. Every few pages, the two work together to produce a particularly playful pairing, such as a shape poem, whose words create the Thames, and a seek-and-find rhyme at Trafalgar Square. Although some of the words may be challenging for newly independent readers, this is a story best shared with an adult. Further facts about each stop of the bus—including a paragraph on the ravens at the Tower of London, which will encourage readers to go back and explore the details of each illustration—are appended. VERDICT A fun family read for future tourists and armchair travelers.—Maggie Mason Smith, Clemson University, SC

'Slightly older picture-book fans will enjoy a rhyming city tour with a fresh, poetic feel.' -- The GuardianImogen Russell Williams, The Guardian

"attractive pen-and-watercolor illustrations of the places visited on the tour, with verse, mostly rhyming couplets, in styles well-suited to each attraction.....A fun...introduction to the famous city."--Kirkus Reviews―

"Vivid and fresh, the ink-and-watercolor illustrations will engage children with action and lively details within scenes of the city’s iconic places. Viewers will enjoy searching the pictures for the comical little raven that follows the family from one destination to the next. While travel guides for children are increasingly hard to find, here’s a great option for introducing kids to London."--Booklist―

Very cute illustrations and really matches all the monuments in London. Only complaint is that if you want a short bedtime story for the little ones, this isn't it.

This was the perfect book to read to my six-year-old granddaughter as we prepare for our trip to London this summer! The poetry is well-written and the facts well-researched. From rhyming couplets, to haiku, to a river poem that meanders through London in the Thames, adults as well as children are entertained and informed. We loved the count-down poem in Trafalgar Square and the frustration expressed in the changing of the guards poem as a child struggles to see the guards through the crowd. The lively, detailed pictures, like the street scene and running children in the poem Rain, kept my granddaughter's interest high. As a children's book writer, I appreciate the work that went into this gem of a book.

What a magical ride. The rhyming, lyrical nature of the book makes you want to climb on board and sing your way around London. A great introduction to London with useful tidbits for the classroom or car ride that will lure many readers to want to climb aboard for a real trip. Even if I never get to London I will feel as if I've experienced the sites and sounds of the city.

Very cute book of poetry. Many favorite tourist spots are mentioned, and each one has a different style of poem. My 4yo loved reading through these poems while we visited London. It turned into her personal London bucket list. Now that we’re back from our trip, we can still read the book together and help her remember the fun things we saw.

This was a great book for my 4 year old daughter. She learned a lot about London before our trip there. She quickly identified Big Ben and the tower bridge just from reading the book. It got her excited for the trip and made it a little more fun for her.

This is a fantastic book to introduce children to the wonders of London! It also brought me back to the sights and sounds of the city, which I have visited in years' past. This is a book that will surely ignite the imagination and 'travel itch' in children and adults alike!

My 3yo absolutely adores this book. We had read it over & over for days & his fascination with the details is remarkable.
The drawings are nice watercolors, very attractive for a little and an old lad.
Highly recommended
