Publisher's summary

For archaeologist Fiona Carver, the Caribbean glistens with untold menace in a heart-racing novel by Rachel Grant, USA Today bestselling author of Dangerous Ground.

Fiona Carver has landed a dream assignment: conducting an archaeological inventory of Ruby Island, a privately owned, pristine gem in the Caribbean. Two months in paradise exploring and mapping a lush rainforest, vast caves, and a seventeenth-century star fort and following up on legends of hidden Spanish gold. Add a simmering reunion with wildlife photographer Dean Slater and it’s enough to take Fiona’s breath away. But the sparkle fades when Dean’s arrival is met with sudden, terrifying danger.

Reunited and determined to see the project through, Fiona and Dean find themselves in a swirl of intrigue as they delve into the complex history of the unspoiled refuge, now a tropical haven for billionaires and their secrets. But the work isn’t easy, as someone appears determined to kill the project - by any means necessary.

As betrayal casts tropical storm clouds over Ruby Island and treasured friendships dissolve into distrust, one thing becomes clear: Fiona and Dean are trapped in a dangerous paradise.

Pure Adrenaline

I anticipated good things from this novel because I loved the first Fiona Carver book, Catalyst so much. Author Rachel Grant did not disappoint, as this story is at least as good as the first.

Fiona Carver is a highly specialized archeologist - tops in her field, and was in high demand until she uncovered a deadly plot on an isolated island in the Aleutians. Somehow, she came out of that frozen event and landed straight into hot water with her employer. Now she's been asked to work an exclusive and exciting site, and it might just be the ticket she needs to overcome the disastrous Alaskan adventure she never wanted.

But complications on this Caribbean paradise are just the beginning of another adventure in the making. She's smart enough to see trouble coming, and definitely smart enough to get off this beautiful but treacherous island before things become deadly. You know that saying, "Man plans, God laughs." It could have been penned with Fiona in mind. She had every intention of getting out of Dodge while she could. But...

I like Fiona's character quite a bit. She's whip-smart, tough, strong and a little bit sassy. She loves her job and believes in her work. She doesn't like people who mess with that simple concept. Fiona's got a great heart and excellent sense of humor. But she's also in love in with a man who cannot reciprocate. She is the walking definition of unrequited love.

Dean is also a wonderful character: complex, strong, intelligent, driven... and broken beyond repair. In spite of this, he lives a good life as a world class wildlife photographer. But he simply isn't capable of being the man for Fiona. Despite the way he feels about her. These two are polar opposites, and just like magnets, their attraction is too strong to ignore. Their tension is palpable. Deep. Delicious.

Crazy magnetic attraction isn't the only thing happening on this tropical island, however. Someone is being incredibly deceptive and conniving. Someone is also playing for keeps in a place where too many people are hiding the truth. The action in this story is intense, with death around nearly every corner. The plot moved along like a well-built, super-charged machine screaming toward the finish line.

All I can say is, I want more!

Wonderfully Done!

The narration of this fantastic story is spot on. I’m so happy with the end of book#2, much, much better for the romantics out there (like me). I hope this series continues. *fingers crossed

Phenomenal story! Really loved it!

This was another great story with Fiona and Dean. This one picks up almost a year after the last one and we are in a completely different environment and locale for the exploration and mapping they are doing this time. Dean and Fiona have not talked since they left Alaska and this is the first time they seeing each other since then and neither really had a heads up. They are in the Caribbean but on a private island trying to document archeological sites and in the ocean but things keep happening. I loved watching Dean and Fiona get closer together admits exploring and figuring out what is going on. Things keep getting sabotaged but at first hard to tell if accident or deliberate. This story was really well written and pulled me in from beginning to end. I was engaged the entire time and would absolutely love to get another adventure with them.
The narrators did a phenomenal job with the characters and accents and really brought it to life! Truly well done!

I was looking forward to this book and it was worth the wait! Fiona and Dean meet again on a private island to work on a historic documentary. Should be an easy gig…not!! Great romantic suspense. Loved the ending…le sigh!

Hot and suspenseful adventure continuation

I loved the second part of Dean and Fiona’s love story with a second side of danger. This hot suspenseful romance is intrigue, danger, excitement, mystery, and romance strapped onto roller coaster pacing. Dean and Fiona are once again real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really trying to just do their best as messy fallible humans while also trying not to die. Fiona is an archeologist who works for the US Navy. She is currently working on a social project in the Caribbean after being hired by a friend from her college days, Jude. Nine months ago she had an intense week in the Aleutian Island with wildlife photographer, Dean (book one in the series). They went their separate ways since their relationship goals were incompatible and have had no contact since. Fiona and Dean are both surprised when he arrives on the island as part of the team. His entrance is accompanied by a helicopter crash and that is just the beginning of the strange coincidences, mysteries, manipulation, and the danger that kicks into high gear. The suspenseful adventure of Dean and Fiona will once again give you all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, gasping, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering. The book has a little bit of everything just like you would expect from romantic suspense - sweet moments, strong bonds, steamy times, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous heart stopping moments, mystery, uber protective men, secrets, painful pasts, evil actors, henchmen, coincidences, and love. The story included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline. This was a good ending to the series.

This is a dual narration and it is amazing. Eva Kaminsky makes a perfect strong but vulnerable Fiona and A.T. Chandler is wonderful as hard driven Dean. Finally Nicola Lambo does a splendid job being the voice of Sadie. Their combined talents add a richer dimension to an already phenomenal story.

Good SQL to previous book

This was a good sequel to the previous one in the series. You really need to read the one prior to this to understand everything. I fortunately received the audible version and the narration was very good.

Second installment is just as good as the first

Great series with interesting settings and an interest in archeology & history certainly makes this series more addictive. Waiting for the next book in series with baited breath.

Adventure story

This is part of a series and really should be read in order. I enjoyed the mystery part of this book but not as much as book 1. The romance was still second to the suspense part. Dean still was a pain.

Excellent narration! (KU read and listen)
