Product Description

Cyanotype Set-- Component Set for Photographic blueprints on paper and fabric. Cyanotype is the “original” sun-printing process, one of the earliest photographic techniques. Discovered in 1842 and distinctive for producing rich, Prussian blue monochromatic prints, Cyanotype was popular well into the 20th century as an inexpensive method for reproducing photographs, documents, maps and plans (hence the enduring architectural term “blueprint”) and famously, for making impressions of biological specimens in the field (“photograms”). Harness the power of the sun to make detailed prints from virtually any object that casts a shadow: tools, toys, plants, leaves, stones, sand, string, lace, etc. Simply place the object on the sensitized surface and expose to sunlight (UV). Use a digitally-printed photographic negative (an inverted black and white photo inkjet-printed onto a transparency*) instead of an object to create full-resolution photographs on paper or fabric. Great for photographers, mixed media artists, printmakers, quilters, kids and more, the cyanotype process is easy, forgiving, quick, magical and fun. Capture the nuance of every shadow—a fun group activity for any age!

I love the final result this product makes. However with that said. There needs to be some planning made ahead of time. Definitely need a completely dark room (with a red light only to see by). Room needs to have an area to hang item to dry that will STAY completely dark. I made dish towels and they take a good day or so to dry completely. I rung them out really well, however they still dripped product down overnight and left a heck of a scary blue mess on my tile floor. So plan for dripping protect area. Also one package of this product is NOT enough liquid for four “flour sack” type dish towels. (See white splotch artifacts in photo) Need maybe two packages. All in all a fun project to do. I will do it again now that I have a bit of experience playing with this.

Works very well and is easy to use. The bottles contain the chemicals in powder form, to which you need to add water. That can be a little tricky since the bottles are opaque. Be careful not to overfill. You need to shake up the bottles and let them sit for a day or so so completely dissolve (according to instructions). They say the chemicals are pretty safe, but I used rubber gloves and I'm sure they'd stain if you got any on you.

I used watercolor paper and a wide soft brush. The paper was pretty absorbent, so it was not easy to get even coverage. I found that making long, fast strokes worked best to keep chemical from soaking in unevenly. A harder surface paper might be better. No idea how it would work on fabric. I poured a tablespoon of each chemical into a dish, which was enough to coat 8 sheets of 8" x 11" paper. They say this kit will make around 65 8 x 10 prints and I would guess you'd get at least that if not more.

I used transparency film negatives printed on my laser printer, but for really solid white areas on the print I think I'll be using a commercial copy shop to make the negatives. (You can also use a sharpie to draw directly on film, but remember that what you draw will be white on a cyan background.) I made a sandwich of my negative and paper between two sheets of picture glass, held together with small binder clips. Be sure to coat and store your unexposed paper and assemble your print frame in a darkened room . It seems more sensitive to ambient light than I expected. I tried various exposure times and found 5 minutes on a sunny day to be more than adequate. Adding just a cap full or less of hydrogen peroxide to the rinse water makes it develop its deep blue color almost instantly. Be sure to rinse the prints thoroughly. Any residual chemical will continue to darken.

It was my first time trying to develop cyanotype prints after teaching myself using online tutorials. This kit was very self-explanatory and easy to use. I had great results after mixing the fluids and using immediately. I think it will last for a while. The price is very good for the amount of prints I will be able to make.

We made cyanotypes on cotton tea towels. I did a test with 4 different times and in the end 20 minutes was best. I was eager to print and didn’t let the chemical solution fully dry on the fabric and it created condensation on the plastic with created foggy shadows and the drips printed into the design. All in all, I am happy with the results and will try again. My foam brush disintegrated in the chemicals and I recommend using a bristle paintbrush. It does take a long time to wash the chemicals out after it’s done baking in sun. Wear rubber gloves- it dried out my skin. I’m very pleased with this kit.

The dyes work well, and I have already used them on fabric so far. They are super pigmented and effective (of course, it depends on how long your mixture is exposed to the sun). My only criticism is that shipping took 2 weeks which is unusual.

I had so much fun finding plants to make prints with. There are lots of easy tutorials. I experimented with fabric, paper, and even used it as a dye in my last attempt. Make sure the fabric is completely dry before you put it out in the sun- but other than that, you can do so much.

This is what worked for me: mixed the solution and let it sit overnight, the next day I grabbed the hoodie I was going to print on and used one of those foam paint brushes to soak the section I needed (PS if you think you've put enough solution on you haven't), then I set it hanging in my closet until dry (it will drip so put something underneath it!!!) which took about a day, then place your negative on top in direct sunlight and let it expose for about 20 minutes or until it looks a rust color, finally go into the bath or shower and put some cold water mixed with a bit of hydrogen peroxide and slowly rinse it out. At the end of this you can either let it dry by hanging up or I put mine in the wash (no detergent no soap) and let it run a cycle and then put it in the dryer. Good luck to all of you I hope this helps some frustration!
