The Broken Vows: Zane and Celeste's Story (The Windsors) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 12,865 ratings

She was his first love, his first heartbreak, and his only regret.

Zane Windsor always loved the way Celeste Harrison’s eyes light up when he infuriates her. It just took him years to realize that what he felt for his childhood rival wasn’t hatred.

When they begin working for their family businesses, competing on a larger scale than ever before, he decides he wants it all with her — and what Zane Windsor wants, he gets.

Zane and Celeste discover just how thin the line between love and hate truly is, falling harder than either of them thought possible...

…until an unexpected tragedy leaves them wondering if any of it was ever real at all.

Led by a desire for revenge, Zane brings Celeste’s company to the brink of bankruptcy, leaving both of their grandparents no choice but to intervene.

The Windsors and Harrisons agree to a merger — on one condition: Zane and Celeste must marry each other.

Dear Catharina,What kind of magic are you sprinkling in these books? Like… within a few paragraphs my heart ached with the longing Zane felt. THAT. FAST.- Billionaire- Childhood Rival- It’s Always Been You- Arranged Marriage- Emotional Slow Burn- Only One Bed- Second ChanceZane is the little boy on the playground, poking and name calling and doing anything he can to get Celeste’s attention. Because he’s been in love with her longer than he can remember. Completely oblivious that he’s hurt her time and time again.Celestial? He calls her Celestial?! Oh my heart!Even with little clues throughout the first 3 books, I was not ready for the levels of agony this story inflicted. This has got to be the slowest emotional burn I’ve ever read. These two hurt me. There were a few tears but also a lot of smiles. So many little details that truly made this book shine. It’s romantic, emotional, and spicy. I’m in love with Catharina Maura’s fantastic writing.I’ve read all four books of this series this month and now I need to decide which Catharina books to read while I wait on Lex’ book. There are some incredibly heavy themes in this book. Check content warnings if necessary.

Catharina does it again! Putting another well written story together! There were time this book had me in a chokehold with emotions. You are cheering for them from the beginning even through their dark times you can’t help but turn the next page to find out if this is the chapter they make it but when you finally come across the chapter where they realize that their future is worth the fight it’s an incredible and moving moment in the book that also makes you appreciate your person (a little life lesson in there being thrown to us by Catharina). Grab a box of tissues, your favorite throw blanket and forget about getting anything done in the house, once you start TBV you will not be able to put it down!!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 stars. Y’all, I did not want this book to end, no joke I prolonged my reading time because I did not want to say goodbye to them. Wow, I was not prepared for the past and present chapters, nor was I prepared for the angst and tension. The one thing I was prepared for was another Windsor man falling head over heels in love with their woman and Zane Windsor did NOT disappoint. This man was OBSESSED with Celeste. He calls her CELESTIAL and had literally counted the days of how long she was gone, which was 5 years, two months and twelve days 😳. But not only that, he’s been in love with her since they were kids, teenagers, and they even gave each other their firsts 😭😭. This man practiced every day for a week perfecting a dish simply because he knew it was her favorite. Then as an apology for his driveway accidentally ruining her shoes, he got her custom made pumps adorned with DIAMONDS to look like a GALAXY. Then he got her flowers that represented a goddess which he thought was perfect for HIS GODDESS *swooning* 😩. And then one of the best parts in this story, in my opinion, is how close they got to each other's families. Like it only took them being together for nearly two years for Celeste’s parents and brother to accept Zane, but when they do it’s amazing. Celeste’s brother became Zane’s best friend and accompanied him to the Windsor poker night 🥲. They always went to her parents house on saturdays so they could spend the whole day with her family and that’s when he got really close to her parents. And then the Windsors have always treated her like family 🥹, and were willing to go above and beyond for her. BUT THEN, the past chapters had to come to and end 😑. I swear both Grandma Anne and Lily were on my hitlist, but later I forgave Lily because it truly wasn’t her fault.

And then like I said, I wasn’t ready for the present chapters, especially because it hurts so much to know how in love Zane and Celeste were and how close their families were just to see them estranged now 😩. Not only that, but to learn what past Celeste did to Zane 😳😳. Like hello?? That was a FULL ON betrayal. And then of course Zane retaliated over the years. The only good thing about this was the fact that Celeste’s parents never faulted Zane for retaliating and only wanted their daughter to be happy and for their future son-in-law to be back in their lives. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the scene where Zane and Celeste are at her parents house on a Saturday and Archer is on a video chat and he yells at Zane in disgust because he whispers in Celeste’s ear and Zane just muted him 🤣🤣. And then the father was like you could’ve muted him this whole time 🤣. And then unfortunately, the Windsor family wasn’t so forgiving other than Grandma Anne, sometimes Val, and Faye but she had never known Celeste before. And so it hurt to see Sierra, Raven, and Lex ignore Celeste’s existence and it took a long while for them to slowly mend their relationship with her. And then it’s just so sad it took Celeste in finding out the truth about Lily to believe Zane, but now wanted to rebuild their relationship whereas Zane just wanted to be amicable throughout the rest of their marriage. BUT it made me so happy to see that Sierra and the sister in laws are going to help Celeste win Zane over because they truly saw her trying to win Zane over. Plus, I like that it’s the FMC trying to redeem themselves rather than the MMC. AND THEN, she got him flowers just like his mother did to his father to convey various messages like sincerity, a fresh start, hopes for renewed love, etc. And the fact that they both kept memorabilia of each other over the years despite everything just shows they truly never stopped loving each other 😢. And y’all, the final chapters were perfection. Like when he proposes, he crafted her own bottles of nail polish and they’re named like “Celestial”, “Zane’s wife”, etc.Not only that, but each of their families were a part of the proposal somehow, and it made me so happy 😭😭.And then we find out they’ve gotten their vows renewed every year for the last ten years 😭.

Favorite quotes/scenes:

Past

“Celeste Harrison.” (Val)
“Haven’t seen her in a while. She went to college in London, didn’t she? How long was she away? Three years?” (Luca)
5 years, two months, and twelve days, actually.

“You’re wrong, you know? I might not own you, per se, but you belong with me.”

“She’s like a drg to me. I know I’m better off without her, but I can’t resist her either. I crave Celeste Harrison with every breath, every heartbeat. It’s no longer a matter of choice—she’s in my fking veins, infecting my heart.”

“Celestial, I’m grateful to have a chance with you at all, even if it is because it makes you feel empowered. No one needs to know, my sweet goddess. This thing… it can just be ours, if that’s what you want. I’ll be whatever you want me to be, Celestial, so long as you let me be yours.”

“You took my first kiss and my first time, and now you’re my first girlfriend. How many more firsts will you take? I’ll give them all to you if you want them.”

“You’ve got the love bug, don’t you?” (Celeste’s mom)
“Yes, ma’am. I’m afraid it’s incurable.”

“Is this a dream?”
“No, boyfriend dearest. This is all very real, but I’ll admit you’re a dream come true.”
“I love you, Celeste.” He grabs my hand and places my palm on his chest. “I love you so much that it hurts here.”
“I’ll kiss it better.”
“You have to. My heart is yours now, so you have to take good care of it.”
“I will, my love.”
“Is that a vow?”
“I vow to take great care of your heart, Zane. It’s mine now, isn’t it? I’ll keep it always.”

“I can’t tell what’s real anymore, because when I’m with you, it feels like all my dreams have come true.”

Present

“It’ll be a cold day in hll if I ever sleep with you again, Zane Windsor.”
“It does seem rather chilly today, doesn’t it?”

“Hey! Step the fk away from my sister, ashle. Don’t do that sht in my house.” (Archer)
Zane pulls away and reaches over to press the mute button, making Mom laugh.
“Zane. Unmute your brother-in-law, will you?” (Celeste’s mom)
“I could’ve just muted him all this time?” (Celeste’s dad)

“You are it for me, Celeste. I fell in love with you when I was fifteen, and I’ve been in love with you ever since. I vow to love you, and only you, forever and always. Through the ups and downs, I’ll be faithful, compassionate, and patient. I’ve loved you through all the seasons in life, Celeste, and I’ll continue to do so. Day after day, I will choose you, no matter what. That, my beautiful Celestial, is a vow.”

“See? Moments like these make everything worth it. We could argue like crazy, and just one single smile from you would still make it the best day of my life.”

“I love you. The good, the bad, and everything in between. I love all of it, Celeste, every single part of you.”
“Zane. I love you more.”
“Impossible.”

“I never seduced you!”
“No? Then what do you call this thing you’re doing that’s making your chest rise and fall against me so seductively?”
“It’s called breathing, Zane.”
“Seduction, that’s what it is.”
“Okay, In-Zane. Just wait till you catch a glimpse of my ankles. That’ll really blow your mind.”
“Yeah? You’ll have to show me.”

“You’re so beautiful, Celeste. Do you have any idea how crazy it is that I get to call you my wife? Fk, I might well be the luckiest man alive.”
“I don’t know about that. But I definitely am the luckiest woman in the world, because I still get to call you mine.”
“I’ll always be yours.”

“Celeste. My entire world has revolved around you ever since we were three years old, and you walked into class with those adorable braids of yours. I thought you were an actual princess, but as it turns out, you were an enchantress, because I’ve been under your spell ever since.”

“I love you. I’m going to make you so happy, Celeste. I can’t wait to show you what our engagement and marriage should’ve been like.”
“I love you more, Zane. You already make me so incredibly happy, you know? I don’t need any of this. You’re all I need, all I’ll ever need.”

“We made it. Despite the odds. Despite the heartache and pain, we made it.”

Ms. Catharina Maura has yet again written one of the most beautiful contemporary romances I’ve ever read.

Everything about this book has just made me feel over and over again and I loved every bit of it. Zane & Celeste have squeezed their way into my heart so easily, not resonating towards these two and their love is quite literally impossible. The tension, eagerness, undeniable love, UGHHHH SO GOODD!! The love making you say? Impeccable, Chefs Kiss delightful in my opinion! Zane had me swinging my feet, crossing my ankles, BLUSHING on queue with Celeste like the man is dreamy as hell.

Faye & Dion will possibly never loose their spot at number 1 but these two rank right under and for good reason.

It’s quite literally insane how well I believe I’ve gotten to understand these characters. My intuition kept me moving on to part two laughing out loud, there was a moment where I had to stop reading because I couldn’t stop laughing & this is where I give my deepest appreciation to Catharina. Never changing the persona of Zane made reading this book in one sitting so immensely worth it. She does a damn good job at withholding necessities not needed and I am so THANKFUL. The angst never ceases to not appease me, everything hurts so good and shows a glimpse of what reality can be while still giving hope to readers who hope to one day find a husband like the ones beautifully written in the books they love. I applaud her gracefully, she really does it so well.

*Further down may have more implicated spoilers than expected so proceed against your own will, I won’t be surprised if every review has a mini vent section lol.*

Celeste & Zane both had major issues. I can’t say one did more wrong than the other because circumstances on each side were too conflicting to choose a side in my opinion. Logically, I know what hit the hardest to who & disappointment will never be dismayed but I grasped something so simple reading this book, understanding. All you can do is understand both sides and read how everything is resolved.

Before I go, I have to let one more thing of my chest. Celeste was an amazing friend. She had to accept so much at one time which is why I can’t see myself ever faulting anything she did. Of course, I was disappointed but I understood. She loved Lily so much and it’s something I hate I can’t really feel conflicted over because it shows how much a beautiful person she is. Throughout the whole book all I could think is she was such a great friend to her, I cried every time she discussed her after the reveal. I’m crying now typing this lol but it’s seriously something that’s stuck with me throughout reading. It’s so hard to fault her because that blindside was crucial. Just another thing that sucks because I knew the moment Lily was introduced she wasn’t someone I wasn’t going to like. Mental Illness is real, I’ve dealt with my own issues which is why I’m not bashing her like I want to but what she did & how she did it, holding eye contact, that will forever pang my heart for Celeste. I’m glad she’s got four amazing friends who by law are her sisters as well, it makes me happy for her.

I have not cried this much reading a book in such a long time, but my God was it worth it. I wanted so bad for things to turn around, and each time Zane made a heartbreaking comment, I cried for Celeste. You could feel the pain each of them felt, and even more so, the pain Celeste felt when she discovered the truth. I would give this fifty stars if I could. It was such a good story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I’ve read

I loved every single bit of this book, from the brothers’ funny banter to the heartbreak that Zane and Celeste went through. Every single word written was so well thought, it was incredible to be reading something and to actually feel the heartbreak through those pages, it was also so realistic and raw to see them try for each other and to give their love a chance. Zane and Celeste definitely became my favorite Windsor couple 💕

Oh, I know it was going to be angsty but man I didn’t see so much of it coming. This read is split into two parts.. The past and the present.

I loved reading about their past and seeing how their childhood rivalry affected both of them so differently. It takes them a bit of time to get on the same page but the pull between these two was undeniable.

“Every thought fades away until there’s nothing left but her — my Celestial.”

It hurt so much more when things fall apart because you see how perfect they are for each other. I won’t comment too much about the present because I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

““You don’t get to be happy, Celeste. Not after what you did to me.”

It was hard to see them reunite and be placed on an arranged marriage when there was so much hurt between them. These two are tested over and over again and just when you think they are in the clear, something else pops up. Their HEA was so well deserved and special shout out to the Windsor Brothers. Just when I didn’t think I could love them more they pull that move at their grandmothers (iykyk).

I have been reading these books in order, I am glad I did as the lives of the other characters make more sense.
I loved Zane & Celeste, I particularly liked Zane’s little nicknames for her.
I was a bit out of by the number of chapters but actually they were not to long or laboured.
I am not a big lover of prolonged angst and I have to say in this book there was a lot, however it was a great storyline, sad and tragic in places, loved all the characters and particularly enjoyed the HEA and epilogue.
Looking forward to the next book with Lexington and Raya.

I started reading 1 of the Windsor series books (Val & Luca) and got hooked so bad that I wiped off the entire series, reading one book after the other. I loved Celestial & Zane's story a lot. I kept wondering what the hell went wrong, till it actually went wrong and I just couldn't hold the tears in + my mouth wide open in shock. I also love the fact how Cat handles characters and stigmas like therapy and traumas. I also love the strength of the characters here, especially the female protagonist. Reading the Stolen moments trilogy next, can't wait to finish that.

For this book, you should read the warnings carefully.
If suicide is a trigger for you, please put the book aside!

The Broken Vows is parted in past and present. Just like Bittersweet Memories. Zane and Celeste find a beautiful love, but at the end of the past-part we were left broken, really broken and crying hard. I couldn't imagine how they could clear their past. But as we know Cat, there is always a HEA. <3

I love those little things like the nail polish or the meaning of the flowers.
