The Last Vampire: Complete Series, Books 1-6 (Last Vampire World Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,482 ratings

There’s a smokin’ hot dead guy locked in my garden shed.
That part’s bad enough.
But now, he’s trying to get out.

Growing up, my father always told me that I’d come to a bad end, just like my mom did when I was a kid. Hearing that kind of stuff when you’re little eventually gets to a girl, but I can’t say I ever expected my ‘bad end’ to involve an angry vampire with a severe case of iron deficiency and a panty-melting English accent.

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Ever since my mother was assassinated, I’ve felt like there was something vast and frightening hidden beneath the fabric of the world. Something none of us are supposed to know about.

So far, finding out I was right hasn’t been nearly as satisfying as I’d hoped. I guess the trick will be staying alive long enough to shout ‘I told you so’ from the rooftops.

But before I can do that, I really need to figure out if the vampire who just bit me is one of the good guys or not.

I really enjoyed this series. The characters were engaging and for the most part they were neither perfect heroes nor absolute villains. The two main protagonists emitted chemistry that transcended the pages and the sex was both passionate and believable. The story moved at a breakneck pace that kept me engaged.

I mistakenly read the next set of books before reading this one. You can read them out of order, but it is best to start with this set to put some things in context. The characters are interesting and easy to have strong feelings about, both good and bad. The storyline has a good ending, but also leaves room for more to come.

*****The Last Vampire Complete Series (Books 1-6) by R. A. Steffan and Jaelynn: This series pulled me in…
This is an entertaining storyline, both different and interesting. There’re actions without understanding, so lots of mystery.
A small coalition: Fae, demon, vampire, human, hybrid everything. Against another coalition: Fae, demon - with intent for extreme harm. Soul bond, Demon bound, salt, iron, immortality, 3 realms/potential war, hidden agendas, and a plan. The costs are high, and the rewards are life itself. Good! An almost anti-climatic conclusion….
Best quote: “…if humanity has proven anything, it’s that propaganda works. With enough time and resources, any group can be convinced to hate any other group.”

Having recently finished the other vampire themed series by R. A. Steffan, Circle of Blood, I knew I was in for a ride. Fair warning though: this series is very, well, serialised. The first five books end in cliffhangers (although I'd personally put the end of Book 3 in the HFN category), something that tends to get many readers upset. Well, here's my unpopular opinion: there's nothing wrong with cliffhangers, especially when all the books of a series are already available. As far as I'm concerned, cliffhangers in this case only made me want to keep going.
The world of The Last Vampire is quite nuanced: throughout the 6 books we are being taken on a rollercoaster ride that involves several trips around the human world, the Fae realm and even Hell. We're also being taken on car chases, motorcycle chases, boat chases and several quite explicit battle sequences. Would I, personally, have preferred to spend more time in the two supernatural realms and less in James Bondesque chases across the globe? Potentially yes. But like I said, this is a rollercoaster ride; you need to hang tight and know you'll end up in a good place in the end. You gotta respect a writer who can do thriller/suspense/fight sequences in such a way WHILE ALSO writing the hell out of the many, delicious romance scenes that may be taking place between the same people but are definitely not repetitive at all. Chapeau.
Now, for the characters. When I started reading Book 1, I had some misgivings about how fast Zorah, broke waitress with chronic illness and low self-esteem, falls for the "dark angel" Rans. But you know what? In the long term, it works just fine. The character of Zorah deals with real, human issues we don't quite see a lot in books like these, and in the end, all these issues contribute to who she's slowly becoming (no spoilers). And while Rans may originally be suffering from a case of "too perfect/too tortured" male protagonist, these two grow together quite nicely. I was afraid that reading 6 books in Zorah's first person POV would be a bit tiresome, but instead I found her refreshing. Especially when she got over herself a bit and became-hey, no spoilers.
Plus: as per usual in R. A. Steffan's work, many of the supporting characters are equally if not more fascinating. I would pay good money for an M/M romance between a certain demon of the first order and his demon-bound human magician servant... Or an enemies-to-lovers story between a certain shibari artist and a stuck-up Fairy... Just saying.
P.S. I finished this series too fast and now I can't wait to sink my teeth into Vampire Bound, that's taking place in the same world and features some of the characters we've already met.

With each book you get drawn more and more into the series. There is romance, treachery, intrigue, sorrow, pain, laughter, and so much more to be discovered within this series. I love the main characters Rans and Zorah. It's a must read. I'm not going into details. Read the series, you won't regret it.

Like some other reviewers, I had some issues with this series. On the one hand it was very imaginative, the characters were likable, and the plot was interesting, but on the other hand, it dragged on and on and became very dull due to lack of plot progression and tedious bedroom scenes that went on way too long.

To be clear, I am a huge fan of smutty books, but after 3 books filled with vivid descriptions, even I was skimming through the details of each sex scene. In addition to that, there were parts of each book where EVERYTHING happened, then longer periods where not much did. The pacing was way off and this series could have comfortably wrapped up in 3 books.

What I liked most were the characters, all of which amused me and irritated me at different points. I enjoyed Rans, Guthrie, Nigellus, Len, Edward, and so on. Zorah was an everyday gal who fell into some extraordinary circumstances and I think her view on things would be pretty normal for someone in that situation. She does some really stupid stuff, but it makes sense that she would in the context of the story so it worked for me.

I thought the plot was unique and interesting and even though things should have moved way faster, I did want to find out what happened next. Without that intrigue, I probably would have DNFd this series due to boredom (and almost did several times).

I will not read Guthrie and Vonnie's books because I'm afraid it would take me forever to get through them like this series. I do love Guthrie, but I can't do it, man. I'm glad I finished this series but I would only recommend it with serious reservations. Be prepared for a long reading slog if you do start it.

It makes a change to have demons as main characters of a story. I love the way the story progresses throughout the books.

Zorah Bright shouldn't exist. Finding a body in her shed is the start of a downward spiral. But when that body belongs the a centuries old vampire things change quickly. Part demon and part human, she is an enigma to the supernatural forces of the Fae and the Demons.
As everything around her falls to pieces, her hope to reach her father. First the first time in years she needs his help.
The books follow the story of the three, as they make new friends and enemies.
Each person has their own agenda. Can they work together for the good of them all?
A must read for all lovers of the supernatural world.
