Does the engine need to be running to operate the compressor?
The compressor needs a constant 13.8 Volts for optimal performance, and that is only possible with the engine running.
What is duty-cycle?
It’s the maximum continuous run time of the compressor, expressed in % of 1 hour.
Is a direct-drive motor better than a gear-drive motor?
Direct-drive motors deliver power straight to the piston rod, it is quiet and reliable. Gear-driven motors have an extra layer of friction, creating a louder system that’s prone to rapid performance decline due to deteriorating gear teeth.

Get a good idea of where everything will go and make sure it will fit. Be sure that the air line won't get kinked because that's how you spring a leak. It might not be a bad idea to buy some extra hose, but they give you plenty. I used more than I needed and only went over by a few feet.
They give you 6' of 3/8" hose for remote mounting the filter, but I mounted it next to my engine intake. I uses 1/4" tubing for this because the 6' of 3/8" wasn't long enough, so I think this is why it takes a bit longer to fill. The gage they give you is great, and they give it to you in a little sheet metal cutout with a switch. I mounted mine where it wouldn't be in the way- I'm sure if you're putting this in a truck you'll be able to keep the gage in the sheet metal mount they give you. They also give you an extra bulb. And 3 air filters. Wiring is also very easy, as long as the pressure switch gets its 12V power it'll turn itself on and off according to whatever pressure its' at.
My only complaint is that they don't give you any way to mount the pressure switch. I used a giant cable tie, but I'll come up with something eventually. Definitely would recommend this product.

The GOOD side is that its a very well built system with easy to understand directions and quality fittings. Although finding a way to plumb the lines around your truck is completely unique, this system offers a nice plumbing/ wiring guide and comes with PLENTY of air line. The big advertisement is that it can fill tires up to 37". I currently run 35" tires on a 20" rim and I can easily fill my tires back up with no stress on the system. The compressor is a nice fit to the tank size as it only takes a few mins to go from empty to full, and the auto shut-off/ turn-on switch works like a charm. You can easily fit air horns, or engage lockers with this but the "tools issue"may leave you wanting more.
That being said, i would consider THIS system to be an excellent entry level air system for most off-roaders and wouldn't bother with anything on a lower level. If you really want to run air tools for remote repair, you may want to turn your sights to a dual compressor system and a bigger tank.

I mounted a flat rocker switch that i won't break off with my knee.
Still have not decided where to mount the gauge?
The tank is mounted in the bed of the truck to prevent the road salt from destroying it. I will eventually build a box to cover the tank and make look better.
The compressor is mounted inside the frame rail, directly behind the transfercase. Should stay mostly dry and protacted from the road salts.
Aired up some 33x12.50 15 thornbirds from 2-30psi in about 3min each.
