Decent speed and good bokeh (depth of field blur) at f/2...but, thankfully, it doesn't cost you the price of a car - like certain lens manufacturers' wares. ;)
Sharp across the frame from corner to corner while maintaining plenty of contrast, this 50mm is the perfect pairing for a slower wide angle lens in your camera bag! I can't recommend this enough!

I presume they believe it will be a stronger connection for their non-included lens hoods/shades.
I don't use shades on these small Leica M symbiotic gems and I've not been plagued with glare nor flare.
The focus rings could be a tad wider for my XXL hands, large fingers, but I can't really blame Zeiss for that.
I've moved mostly to their f2 selections avoiding even heading back in the direction of a larger slr type lens after 50 years of shooting professionally..
Now my M11, and my two Leica and two Zeiss optics can fit practically in my one hand.
But an ultra small non-'camera' bag makes it even nicer.
the 21mm f3.4, Summicron 28/2, Zeiss Biogon 35mm, and 50mm f2 Planar take up less space than this review, but service the demands of the 61mp sensor easily.
It's all fun again, and my Domke bag stressed shoulders are a thing of the past.
(Not Domke's fault--I loved Domke bags professionally but hated my inability to avoid putting everything in them including piping for the sink...)

My copy did have the tiniest bit of "play" in the focusing ring in the turning direction (apparently this is not uncommon). It had no effect on the performance of the lens. Nothing serious at all, just a little bit of a let-down for what is such a nice lens, otherwise.
I only changed to the Sonnar to get the extra almost-stop, and also because the Sonnar's rendering is so beautiful. On the other hand, the Sonnar can be challenging to focus (but mine is calibrated to f/1.5), and has some focus shift, for a much more expensive lens. It's a trade-off.
