I finally got tired of the Dell and started looking at options. First I tried the MS Surfacebook 3, found it didn't play well with my USB dock at work and my multiple monitor setup. Then I tried the Surface Pro 7, since I have an older Surface Pro 4 and love it, but that, too, had issues. Finally I tried the new 2020 model 15" version of this, with the OLED and the Nvidia GTX discrete card, but once again, issues with the docking options. I couldn't find any dock that seemed to work well for multimonitor use.
I saw this model, and flat out fell in love with the taller aspect ratio screen. Since I don't watch movies on my laptop for the most part, I don't have any real need for the letterbox 16:9 sizing. The taller one would be much better for web use, emails, and my remote desktop connections to servers that I do throughout the day. I caught it on a Thanksgiving sale, and brought it home.
This has similar specs as my Dell did 3 years ago, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM, i7, and at the sale cost, was twelve hundred less than the original cost of my Dell. But this has a processor that is 3 generations newer, a faster SSD with newer technology, and an OLED screen. Not to mention the fact that it flips over to be used as a tablet (something that was HUGELY awkward with the much larger and more cumbersome 15" Spectre I tried) and includes a pen.
Unboxing was easy - they make it a snap to get this out and up and running. Even includes a sleeve for protection if needed.
The only real complaint I have is the power brick. I would have much preferred something that had prongs and could plug directly into the wall like a Macbook Pro. This still has the power cord that plugs from the wall to the power brick, although the power brick is at least small and convenient, since this isn't a huge power hog like its larger screen brother. The cord on the included charger is nice, though, braided rather than some vinyl / plastic sheathing.
It had some Mcafee junk installed that actually screwed up my 20GB zip file I have for a new laptop to install all my software from, so I removed that and put on a better antivirus and that issue went away.
The Optane memory is something they hype, but I've seen people complain about how it can cause issues with some things like file copies and such. And I have experienced that myself as well now during my initial setup, but it's not something that I will have to deal with often in normal use. I did find some options out there to disable it if desired, but haven't tried that yet. I may just to see if I can turn it on and off at will to alleviate the slowness it causes with some file operations. But if it does as it should and increases the speed of OS file access, then it should prove beneficial in the long run.
Micro SD card slot is great, since I had that on my Dell, used it for my music and my photos, so they weren't wasting space on the internal SSD. Good access times on there for an SD reader.
Keyboard is nice, good feel for someone who touch types like I do. Layout is straight forward and I will like the better placement of home and end that this has, compared to the annoying locations of them on the Dell. Muscle memory will take a bit of time though.
Fit and finish are perfect, as were my other older Spectres. I love the looks of the copper edging on the dark surface.
But the screen is what steals the show. Although it's a fingerprint magnet it looks gorgeous. Just a couple months ago I changed over from my 75" Vizio LED to a new large LG CX OLED TV, and was blown away by how much better the OLED looked. So it's the same reaction here. The colors are so vibrant, the contrast is simply amazing. I have the bing wallpaper app so my wallpaper changes every day, and in my multiple monitor setup at work, the quality of the visual appearance between the two monitors (not cheap ones either) and this OLED screen is amazing.
Touch works very well, as does the pen. And having a USB chargeable pen is a great idea. I like how they hide the port with the sliding cover so it's unobtrusive when not needed.
The OS boots quickly, the fingerprint reader works fine although I'm accustomed to the IR webcam features for facial recognition with Windows Hello, and that also works flawlessly here.
I also appreciate the better location of the webcam in this Covid world we live in, for zoom meetings and such. Much better than having it at the bottom of the screen like Dell did.
The fans - I've never had a laptop with fans that, even when they crank themselves up, are so soft, such a low pitch. They don't even SOUND like fans, it's such a different sound than normal.
I use it a lot on my lap on my couch at home as I work nights sometimes getting extra things done, and I've had no issues so far with heat or air flow doing so. It gets warm sometimes on the bottom right, but not at all even remotely uncomfortable.
This is, by far, my favorite laptop I've ever had. The fact that it worked flawlessly with both my Dell WD15 dock at home and the dock I have here at the office was just icing on the cake.
