I have a dual keyboard rig with a mixer. The lower board is my controller for my cubase daw. However, my pc suddenly got noise in the usb hub internally. I now route the mixer into the komplete and connect the komplete to the computer. Even better I still have my keyboard connected to the computer. The native instruments pieces show up in cubase as vst and are controlled by my keyboard.
One caveat is that the komplete doesn't allow direct monitoring of it's outputs so I set up ableton live (also came with the komplete) with a profile that allows me to monitor the outs.
To avoid the above I suggest using the komplete 6, which does have monitoring on the outputs.
My setup allows me access to a fully functional daw, great audio out for my computer, and the ability to use headphones when not using external speakers. Plus I got a full suite of music production software. A huge bonus.
I'm extremely please with this product.
Pros: The main volume knob is big and works great. Real time monitoring of the input levels are great. The outputs to main studio monitors produce more than enough sound. I rarely have to dial it up more than half way. Most of the time I'm mixing with the volume just a quarter of the way up. Latency is pretty good as well. I can get about 2.5 ms with ASIO drivers on a windows 10 machine on a Ryzen 5 processor. This next pro may depend on when and where you purchase it, but mine came with a suite of plugins from Native Instruments that just are some of the best sounding stuff you'll ever use. I still use the compressors and synth plugins it came with to this day. Now I had a promotional thing on top of that with Guitar Rig 5 Pro for mine, but I stopped using that over time in favor of other amp and cab plugins I own. None the less still a great deal.
Cons: Lately it has been stopping in the middle of usage. I've moved it to another USB port on my computer and it hasn't been doing it as much lately. Not sure if that's my computer or if it's the unit itself. The front headphone jack has developed noises, pops, and hisses over time. The good thing is that appears to only be affecting listening on headphones and not the recording itself, and this doesn't occur thru my monitors. So at the end of the day it is an annoyance and nothing more. Speaking of headphones the output is extremely low. I have the volume cranked and it still is not the optimal volume I would like at times.
All in all for about $100-$140 depending on if you get it on sale or not this is a solid device. I still recommend it despite it developing a few issues over the course of the year I've owned and used it. It still ultimately does what it needs to and that is record solid signals at low latency.
The one works great and has low distortion.
The round trip distortion comes in at about 0.005%, an SNR of 86 dB.
Not bad for this price.
This thing worked right out of the box, installing drivers was super easy on Windows 10. I don't care about the free software this comes with so I've had no issues there. You don't need to Native Instruments install center or whatever it's called to install the drivers. They're super easy to install straight from the exe.
So far it sounds great. No noise interference when playing games browsing the web like you get from an internal sound card / motherboard.
This thing looks and feels great. The knobs feel great to move and the modern look of this thing is far above any other interface I've seen. This thing works great with Sonarworks Reference 4 and FL Studio ASIO drivers.
Recommended.
EDIT - 1 Year Later:
Thing still works great and I've had no issues.
Top reviews from other countries
It looks great and sounds clean (albeit with quite low output overall).
The main oversight with this unit is the lack of direct monitoring options without the use of a DAW.
Direct monitoring is only possible through the headphone outputs unless you have a DAW running in the background to route the input signals to the main output.
If you had a guitar going through an axe fx or helix unit and wanted to just plug in and hear the direct signal through the main out, this is impossible without a DAW running.
If you were a DJ and wanted to run traktor Pro along with some external cd or vinyl decks then you would have to run traktor software AND an DAW to set the direct monitoring routing. This causes undue system strain and the possibility of dropouts and clicks and pops due to sharing the card between two programs.
I suspect that this could all be resolved by the release of a small software program that could toggle this option such as the way focusrite have implemented their direct monitoring through focusrite control.
This is boxed and ready for return.
Very disappointed.
This is my first Native Instruments product so it’s my first time using the Komplete Kontrol software that comes with it and, let me tell you, it is a joy. Guitar Rig could use an update maybe but overall the plug-in game that I can now bring to Logic is on point.
My only regret is not dropping the extra cash for the Audio 2 with the two combo inputs. Live and learn I guess.
