While I Can't Speak for Others, I Received a Fantastic Monitor

I purchased the IPS version of this monitor (XF270HU), despite some worry over the quality control issues other users outlined. I decided to take a chance, assuming that a higher percentage of people received defective monitors and skewed the reviews. I decided before ordering that I would review it after a month, whether my experience was good or bad, and hopefully give people an idea of what to expect.

To begin with, there was minor cosmetic damage to the external packaging on arrival, probably done by careless shippers. Not a big deal, as the contents were unharmed. The monitor came with HDMI and DVI cables as well, though I had purchased a DP cable to take advantage of the FreeSync functionality (one of the main draws of this monitor for me).

Pros:
+Basically the only 1440p FreeSync IPS panel being sold.
+Beautiful, crisp colors
+High quality frame, stand takes minimal desk space while still being quite solid and flexible
+No backlight bleed and very little IPS glow
+No dead pixels/dust/etc. or other defects to speak of
+Physical OSD buttons
+Significantly less expensive than its GSync counterpart
+USB ports on monitor and slot for cables in stand minimizes cord clutter
+After a month of gaming I haven't noticed any higher input lag than I had on my old TN panel

Cons:
-OSD resets all settings when switching to or from "gaming mode", making that feature functionally useless
-Monitor speakers are fairly low-quality. Still a nice feature, but for something of this price I expected a bit better

Overall I'd rate this monitor a definite "buy" for any AMD user wanting a 1440p FreeSync monitor. If you're not after those features specifically, there are better options out there: the G257HU ( Acer G257HU smidpx 25-Inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) Widescreen Monitor ) is 25 inches, 1440p IPS for less than *half* the price of the XF270HU. This monitor is really catered towards gamers who are willing to spend a bit (or a lot!) extra for better quality and performance out of their monitor. It's up to you if that's worth the price, but I'm very happy with my purchase and expect to get a lot of use out of this monitor.

TL;DR: best (only?) 1440p IPS FreeSync panel out there. If you care about all three of those things, this is what you want. If not, keep looking.

Overdrive, backlight bleed, and quality control

A note on the overdrive, and supposedly not being able to enable it while Freesync is on, overdrive works together with freesync. It's not that overdrive is turned off, it's that the option to turn overdrive on/off is disabled because overdrive is always on with freesync while using displayport. Furthermore, from what I understand, it is ONLY enabled while freesynce is running. Therefore, if you're not using freesync while using display port, overdrive will be disabled, and may run into bad ghosting. Even if you have freesync turned on in AMD settings, freesync will not work unless a game in fullscreen. Playing a game in windowed or windowed borderless, will result in freesync not working, and in turn, no overdrive.

You can use the Hz counter in the monitor settings to tell if you're using freesync. If it's under 144hz, then you know you're using freesync (unless you're playing a game at over 144fps). Once you figure this out, the monitor is pretty good. The back light bleed isn't bad, and colors are great. Many of the reports of bad ghosting and crap are coming from people who do not understand the way overdrive works with freesync. Granted, if you don't want a monitor that can't be in borderless if you want to get the pros of freesync+overdrive, or own a Nvidia card, then so be it. As for the backlight bleed, this monitors default brightness is pretty damn high by default, so that can exasperate the issue, however I don't find it to be that bad even at default brightness.

Now for the quality control:
It's pretty bad. Mine came with some of the tabs that hold the plastic piece that fits inside of the orange circle, broken off and not fitted together properly like they were just smashed onto the metal. One of the metal hooks on the stand was bent like someone dropped it on the floor and didn't even give it a look-over. The fact that something so blatant made it through, leads me to think that they don't actually have "quality control". It's probably cheaper for them to manufacture these things and just ship em off, than actually give them a 2 second look-over. Sadly I'm taking summer quarter in college, and can't deal with the wait for a return, so the hook has just been bent back in place. The panel itself had no issues, though. There weren't any dead or stuck pixels.

In conclusion, if you're feeling lucky, then go ahead and get the monitor. If you get a good product, then it's a great monitor. The lack of quality control, however, are too much of a gamble for a lot of people, which is why I ding is two stars. I fond it a little disrespectful that they ship me a product they gave no care about, that I paid $400 for.

Beautiful monitor -- the combination of IPS, 1440p, 144hz, and FreeSync is just excellent for all purposes.

Zero backlight bleed on my monitor with minor IPS glow -- the worst of it coming from the bottom right hand corner, which diminished significantly after lowering the near-blinding level of brightness that was set out-of-the-box. It's nearly flawless.

But there's a dead pixel in the top left-hand corner. This is flat out unacceptable on a high-end monitor like this, so back it goes. Will update both score and review when new monitor comes in.

Edit:

Exchange monitor has arrived. Zero dead pixels. Very nearly zero bleed, very nearly zero glow. This is near flawless.

It's a keeper. A beautiful keeper.

Four stars. No item that requires a lottery deserves five.
