Publisher's summary

She's the cure that could save him. If only she could remember how.

Two years ago, 20 year-old Samantha Knight experienced a life-altering trauma. Unfortunately, she can't remember what it was. Previously outgoing, fun, and carefree - it's as if someone flipped a switch on Sam's insides. Now, she's afraid of everything, socially awkward, and convinced she's going crazy. As Beyoncé would say, she woke up like this. Sam tries her best to juggle college classes, work, and the nosiest roommate ever, but behind the curtain, Sam's life is all about keeping a firm grip on her own mind. And life is kicking her ass.

Alex Channing has only one enemy in this world: werewolves. Born and raised to fight in the supernatural military, he has become an expert at hunting and killing rabid werewolves. But when Alex is bitten and infected, he finds himself racing against a ticking clock for his own survival.

Alex's search for a cure leads him to an oracle in a seaside town in California. And she gives him the reading of a lifetime. The key to his cure is a girl who forgets things, cries spontaneously, and might just be insane. And the only way she can save him is to do the one thing Alex knows is impossible: She has to remember.

Book 1 in the highly anticipated Heart Lines series, a spin-off of the best-selling and award-winning Dirty Blood series. Note: you do not have to read Dirty Blood first. You can start here!

Fun ideas, Cool magical elements, Great Narration!

Narrator does a good job. She fits the story and characters well; I even liked her guy voice! A good listening experience.

I really enjoyed the premise for this story and the magical aspects. The tarot card stuff was fun too. Something happened to Samatha a couple years ago that has made her afraid of men and dogs, but she has no memory of what. She knows something is off, but something keeps her from thinking beyond what is expected. When feral werewolves start showing up and weird puffs of fur show up in her hands, Samantha can’t keep denying what is right in front of her face. We also get POV chapters from Alex, who was bitten by a rabid werewolf, so he’s slowly dying. He’s on a search for a cure, when he ends up meeting Samantha. She may be just the one to save him, but things are a bit complicated. He knows a lot more about what’s going on then Samantha, so he’s got a lot of secrets that he’s not sure how to tell Samantha. There’s a dash of romance going on too. I liked the chemistry between them, and I loved getting dual POV’s. Some good action and danger too, so that’s always fun.

I didn’t realize that there was a previous series that kind of connects to this one; some of the main characters from one of the author’s other series are side characters in this book, so I’m not sure how much Samantha was involved in the previous series. I’m kind of glad I didn’t read about her before she lost her memory because she sounded kind of annoying and not the type I like to read about, but I mostly liked her in this book. She’s a scaredy-cat a lot, but she does have some strong moments. I didn’t like that she whines about her lost memory all the time; when she’s offered solutions, she doesn’t accept the help. That can get annoying, but she does grow a bit as the story goes on though.

Overall, I found the story entertaining and fun. The audio was great. I’m really interested to see where the story is going to go; this one has a cliffhanger for some parts of the story, so there’s still lots of story to be told.

Great series start

The author provided me with a complimentary copy of this audiobook with no expectation of a review. I loved this book. I wasn't sure at first. Mainly because the narrator takes audible breaths, almost as though she's gasping for air, which was a bit distracting. I know everyone breaths but I don't usually notice it like I did with this book. I've noticed that the next two books have a different narrator so I'm hoping those books will be better.

There were a lot of twists and turns. It was a fairly enjoyable listen (despite the narration issue). There was a cliffhanger but not so much so that I was screaming "no, why did it have to end there!" LOL. I look forward to continuing the series soon.

Had me laughing from the very beginning

I love when books have sassy characters that make me laugh and this one was on point. From the first chapter I was hooked and it kept me on my toes. Or going to lie.. luving Graves.. but I easily fall for the pain in the ass male in the story.. and her brother 🤣 he is amazing!

Narration was great.. the transition between chapters and characters was pretty smooth. The narrator did a great job and I hope she does the rest of the series.

Overall I loved the characters and the story and I can’t wait to get to book 2!

Wonderful!

Wow! This audio book was amazing. Great segue from Dirty Blood. Who would have thought that Sam, as a small part character in Dirty Blood would be such a poignant personality. And bringing Alex into the mix was genius because readers were already endeared to him because he is so complex.

I hope the rest of this series is released soon on Audible. I am really looking forward to it

Excellent Unique Start to Series

At first I wasn't sure about where the author was taking this story. I really thought Sam was going to turn out to be something different. The author does a great job of keeping us guessing and wondering about what is going to come next. As the first book in the series, we are discovering this world and a good portion of the book is Sam trying to figure out the past. I feel like this first book has set the pace for a great rest of the series to come and I can't wait to see where this series goes. First book from this author I have ever encountered and I definitely like and am intrigued by her style and ability to bring us a unique story.

This narrator is also new to me and I am very pleased with the performance she gave. There was a little bit where I could hear her intake breaths here and there but nothing I am unwilling to look past. I thought she gave a great performance and was an excellent pick for this new adult listen. I am excited for more by this narrator.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

3,5 stars

This series is a spin-off from the Dirty Blood series but can be read without having read that series. But if you have read that series, you may find it confusing to see that Sam has this totally different personality in this series. It is however, a very plausible scenario in my opinion and I like the storyline.
I do like this first book in a series a bit better than the first book of Dirty Blood but it might be just that this series seems to have a bit more magical influences than the Dirty Blood series, although I’ve only read the first book of that series as well so I can only speak for the first book.

As for the story: Sam has weird gaps in her memory that somehow are connected with her altered personality. Up till a few years ago she was the most social, flirtatious and outgoing person but after something happened that she has no memory of, she has fled her hometown and after living with her aunt and a few therapists later, she now works in Mirabelle’s shop, Oracle, in the hopes she will somehow get through those gaps in her memory with her help, seeing as Mirabelle is known as a psychic shaman lady.
While Sam is trying to uncover & then recover from the ordeal that has altered her personality so much, hunter Alex comes to town to seek Mirabelle’s help as a last resort for his bad condition after a werewolf bite poisoned him too much to recover.

Some parts were a bit confusing for me to follow because Sam tends to forget certain things that have happened and at first I thought it was a plot hole but it’s not. It all makes sense but I do still have some questions but then again, there are 5 more books in this series so I’ll get my answers in those sequels.
I loved some parts of the ending and am quite curious to see how the story evolves. Although I’ll finish the Dirty Blood series first, just to be on the safe side, since I’ve already started that one (listening to book 2 while writing this review).
As for recommendations or comparisons, I really don’t know. Not that I’ve read a lot but this is not like any other werewolf story I’ve ever read. It’s still good but there’s more to it than just werewolves.
