Summary

The brand new novella in the Sunday Times #1 bestselling Rivers of London series.

THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY ACROSS THE POND...

When ex-FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does.

That person is Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Arriving in snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town - and there's no sign of Henderson.

Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbours report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising - cutting off the town, with no way in or out...

As the clues lead to the coldest of cold cases - a cursed expedition into the frozen wilderness - Reynolds follows a trail from the start of the American nightmare, to the horror that still lives on today...

Loved it

I loved this, but missed the other narrator’s emphasis. Nothing wrong with this one, just not the same. Also, I missed Peter Grant, he’s so British! But I would definitely recommend this AFTER folks have read/listened to all the previous Rivers Of London series.

Great story

I enjoyed this story a lot. It was very difficult from the Peter Grant stories, but it stayed true to the world that we know and love.

I was a huge fan of X-Files and love hearing about Native American culture, so this was perfection for me. That being said, I will never go swimming in a lake again…

A gift of a book

Another fun magic filled story, it could have been an x file. A brilliant mix of fantasy and fiction, those hard facts grounding the story so well. I just wish the narrator could do men's voices. It made it very difficult to tell them apart, I'm glad the guys didn't have a big conversation. Though her women's voices were beautifully prodiced

Disappointing follow up to Rivers Series.

Story continues as good but narration is poor. I was not left wanting more. I am likely to look for the next book but will hope there is improvement.

Not as good as usual and an annoying narrator

I wanted this to be good but the story wasn’t up to the ones based in the UK or Germany. It was hamstrung by the protagonist not being a practitioner (able to do magic). The narrator had some very annoying habits. The narrators’ normal voice (the one she uses for the protagonists’ thoughts) is quite normal and likeable so why is that so different from the irritating bark of the protagonists’ spoken voice? Why does every man sound the same? They all sound a few sandwiches short of a picnic or like they’ve gargled with glass. And is Aaronovitch really pronounced AaronORvitch? Come on!!

Took a while to buy in, but then I was hooked

I’m not sure what I was expecting but this isn’t a typical ‘Rivers of London’ book. I took a while to buy in to the characters but they grew on me and by the end I found myself eager to find out when the next in this series was being published. A good fun read.

I usually enjoy Novellas but...

This missed the mark. I felt that a whole Audible credit was wasted.

I liked finding out more about Agent Kimberly, but the narrative was lacking and the narrator reminded me of cheap mass produced audiobooks.

A bit disappointing

Not nearly as good as the stories set in the uk. Storyline lacks complexity and humour. Nothing new to be gained here, sad to say.

nice little story

the world of Aaronovich is always amazing. making the magical world bigger than just London is a very nice development. the story is not very long, but interesting, and after a slow start, gets full with magical action.

the narrator had good and less convincing voices. the most important one - Kimberley- was very convincing. i was also impressed with the child's voice. the male voices... not so much. they all sounded the same, as if they were all big bellied old guys.

For heavens sake - don't pander to the USA

The Rivers of London is a great series. This attempt to turn it into a franchise illustrates very nicely why it should not have been attempted. The story is simply not of the same calibre and felt like a novella stretched and padded into medocirty.
Might have been better to transfer an "ex-Agent Reynolds" to the UK.
