About the author
About the Author
Gina was born in the late 1950s to a mum who frequently abandoned her in a pram outside Woolworths and a dad who after two pints of beer could play a mean Boogie Woogie on the piano in the front room of their 3-bed semi on the Wirral. Being the less adventurous of three children, she remains there to this day - apart from a long weekend in Bognor Regis in 1982.
Her teenage years were filled with angst, a CSE in Arithmetic, raging pimples and Barry White. Marriage and motherhood ensued, followed by divorce in her early thirties and a desperate need for a career and some form of financial support for herself and her young daughter. Trundling a three-wheeled trike along a leafy path one wintry day, memories of her favourite author Enid Blyton, ginger beer and solving mysteries along with her lifelong passion to be a police officer, excitedly gave way to an epiphany. And thus began an enjoyable and fulfilling career with Merseyside Police.
On reaching an age most women lie about, she quickly adapted to retirement by utilising her policing skills to chase after two granddaughters, two dogs and one previously used, but still in excellent condition, husband. Having said goodbye to what had been a huge part of her life, she suddenly had another epiphany. This time it was to put pen to paper to write a book based on her experiences as a police officer. Lying in bed one night staring at the ceiling, Gina's alter-ego Mavis Upton was born, ready to star in a humorous and sometimes poignant look at the life, loves and career of an everyday girl who followed a dream and embarked upon a search for the missing piece of her childhood.

I’ve been desperately waiting for Mavis to return since I flipped the final page of the previous book Handcuffs, Truncheons and A Polyester Thong, and was incredibly looking forward to seeing what she would get up to this time. With hen parties, weddings, donuts, drag queens and hippos, I wasn’t disappointed! You can’t make this stuff up, unless your name is Gina Kirkham obviously and she’s an absolute natural in setting a scene and making me laugh.
Hilarity ensues throughout the story. Yet, it’s not all a laugh-a-minute and there are some incredibly poignant moments that left me with a lump in my throat. One minute I’m laughing my arse off at the various shenanigans, the next I felt myself go all teary-eyed and in need of a tissue. Not only is Mavis dealing with her dad who is suffering from dementia, she’s also fiercely missing her mom. As was I, to be honest, with her wonderful malapropisms and I’m delighted Gina Kirkham managed to squeeze some in there anyway.
Tackling a tough topic like dementia, in what is essentially a comedy novel, is not an easy thing to do. Yet Gina Kirkham has finely tuned the balance between the sad reality and the lighthearted moments. Having personal experience with this cruel disease, I could really appreciate that because that is what it’s like. As a side note, I will never again be able to listen to Lucy in the sky with diamonds without giggling like a lunatic.
There is a truly delightful and colourful cast of characters to keep you entertained, from Mavis’ friends to her colleagues. The banter between the team is such a joy, whether they’re actively mocking someone or using humour as a coping mechanism to deal with some of the things they stumble on while on active duty. Special shout-out to Petey who caused me to snort tea all over my Kindle on more than one occasion.
I’ve loved every minute of catching up with Mavis. No matter how crappy my day is going, she always manages to make me smile. This series is the perfect escapism, wrapped in a slightly quirky but delightful bow. I do so hope there will be more from Mavis! Hugely entertaining and you should grab yourself a copy and meet her for yourself. We all need a little bit of Mavis in our lives!
I loved the characters in this book and the writing style was excellent, it flowed so well I read it in one sitting and loved the lot – it really is an excellent book and it is certainly one I will be highly recommending!
Five stars from me, and whilst this is fine to read as a stand alone but I have just downloaded the first book as it sounds fantastic and if this one is anything to go by, I’m in for a treat!!

This book is full of scouse charm and warmth, it oozes out of every page. The scrapes that Mavis finds herself in are hilarious. But, there are a few more sombre scenes, that tell the reader clearly what the nitty gritty realities of the police are really like. I think this is why I love this book, and the previous book, so much. It is Ms Kirkham's ability to write with warmth, humour and compassion, all rolled into one.
We read about a flasher on a pushbike who rather likes donuts. We meet a diva drag queen and, the situations that Mavis finds herself in regarding her infamous thongs, are all laugh out loud. This is such clever writing. But, for me, the true joy of this book is in the more laid back moments, when we get to see the 'real' Mavis. The scenes when Mavis is talking to her dad who has Alzheimer's are particularly touching, and really helps to shed light on how adult children care for their parent who has this disease, and the challenges they face. That's not to say that there isn't humour involving Mavis and her dad, because there is a lot of humour. As Mavis says, if you didnt laugh, you'd cry This book makes you feel every single emotion, but at the heart of this book is the love and devotion hat Mavis has for her family, her husband, dad and daughter, and her colleagues.
There are a wealth of colourful characters in this book. Percy in particular is a firm favourite. The not so clued up police officer, who you just can't help but like. Mavis though, is at the heart of the story. Mavis who finds herself in all of those tricky situations, who wears her heart on her sleeve and who you'd want to help you if you found yourself in trouble.
Whisky Tango Foxtrot was a sheer delight to read. It has everything, all delivered with great wit, humour and compassion. All the stars.
Whiskey Tango Foxtroxt is about the next stages of Mavis Upton and how she is preparing to get married to Joe whilst still working in the police force. We follow Mavis through her journey in the force and the cases that she has to deal with. I am still laughing at the things that happened as I type this review and trying my best not to spoil it for you as this is one book that you really really really need to read. All I will say is that I will never look at Krispy Kreme’s the same again nor will I ever be able to picture my good blogger friend Neats (AKA The Haphazardous Hippo) the same again after reading this book. I also can't wait to read her review of this book just so I can talk about it in more detail with her.
We are dealt with the same laugh out loud moments as we were in the first book and some of the Petey moments that have you cringing but giggling about at the same time.
Everytime I have tried to go into detail about a section of this book to give a brief overview of my thoughts I have ended up laughing so all I will say is, it is humorous, a great laugh out loud book and also one that I think the author should be able to have prescribed by a medical professional for those feeling very low and need a laugh, I certainly enjoyed it and cannot wait to see what Mavis’s next exploits are.
As with her first novel, Gina Kirkham mixes in scenes that are genuinely moving and poignant. Many of these involve Mavis’s relationship with her long-lost father, but also include a scene set around a tragic road-traffic accident.
We get to meet a fabulous cast of new characters in this book, and catch up with others from the first, such as Mavis’s daughter, Ella, who is now building her own independent life.
The hunt for an elusive flasher with a penchant for Krispy Kreme donuts (not necessarily eating them), acts as a very entertaining and intriguing aspect of the narrative.
Despite some scenes being heightened to extract maximum comedy, you get an overall genuine sense of what it is like to be a police officer, and the range of jobs you may get called to at any moment. As the author was a serving officer for many years, all the details about the job will be wholly on point, adding another layer of interest to the novel.
Gina Kirkham has a wonderful gift for contrasting high and even slapstick comedy with sudden changes in tone, to elicit a wide range of emotion from the reader; proving that life is a mixture of the hilarious and the tragic, and all shades in between.
I urge you to read this book (and its forerunner) – you’ll never think of a donut the same way again!
