Customers are dissatisfied with the speed of the computer drive. They mention that it is slow, making for very slow transfers and preview downloads. The connection is overall really slow, and copying just feels slow. The web control panel lags horribly, and the load times can sometimes be lengthy. It is also slow to wake up and sometimes you have to try to connect more than once. Transcoding many videos is CPU intensive, and it stops transferring data for 20-120 seconds or pause for minutes.

When setting up the device, you'll need to have it connected to the internet to build the Plex database, but once Plex is up and running, there's no requirement to have an internet connection.
I have not used the other features of this device, I only use it as a portable Plex server, so I can't address the ability to automatically backup SD cards.
I gave the device five stars because it does exactly what I want it to do. On individual ratings, I gave the Tech Support 3 stars only because I required no Tech Support. Can't give something I haven't used five stars.
The bad Plex for Passport reviews are obviously written by people that don't know what they are doing so are having a bad time with the product thinking that it doesn't work. The fact is that the Passport works PERFECTLY with Plex Media Server, it's just a matter of setting up your videos and media properly.
I have over 2,500 movies and probably close to that in TV show episodes and all of them....100%....play flawlessly on the Passport.
The trick is to first convert your videos to mp4. I used handbrake and converted all my media using the very fast 480p preset (use whatever preset profile resolution you prefer).
(The reason I used the 480p preset is because that resolution is perfect for mobile devices such as tablets and phones. This also heavily reduces the size of the files. It turned over 6 terabytes of video into 2.5 terabytes so I still have plenty of room on the Passport for more videos :-) Another perk of using this resolution is that with the decreased file size, videos load faster and you can have more streaming devices connected to the passport all streaming at the same time with no bottleneck hiccups. Works great!!)
After selecting the very fast 480p preset I also adjusted the video frame rate from 30 to the 29.7 or whatever it is. I also added ENGLISH as the audio to be selected if the video has multiple audio tracks like with mkv files. Also be sure that the Web Optimize (under the SUMMARY tab) checkbox is checked and uncheck the other boxes. This will help Plex know where the data is located within the video so that everything plays smoothly.
After handbrake is all setup it's just a matter of time. Takes along time to do a ton of movies I can tell you that.
There is also a program called "filebot" which allows you to select all your videos and it will rename them with a Plex friendly name so that you're not wasting time having to manually change the name to get Plex to automatically download the proper metadata for the videos. Saved me countless hours for sure. It cost $6 buy was well worth it.
It took over a month to convert all of my movies and shows and I have a pretty fast computer with 32 GB of ram so if you have a lot of movies.....better get cracking :-)
Once all the videos are converted all you need to do is hook up the Passport to your PC and then create a folder for the movies. I have movies in one folder and TV shows in another. Be sure to structure your folders for your TV shows such as:
The Walking Dead/Season 1/episodes go here
That way Plex can easily find everything and will know what is what.
Once you have transferred your videos you need to turn on the Passport and enable the WiFi and connect it to your local network. You can do all of this by first connecting your PC to the Passports WiFi which is MY PASSPORT 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Once your PC is connected you have to open the Passport interface. This is where you will enable Plex and will enable and connect the Passport WiFi to your local network.
Once your Passport is connected to your local WiFi you can open the Plex interface by going to MEDIA on the Passport and clicking on the CONFIGURATION button. Clicking that will open Plex. Now just click on the 3 little dots for your PASSPORT in Plex and have it scan for new library files.
It took an entire day to download all of the metadata for my videos but I have a REALLY BIG collection.
Once it's done, you are good to go. Just connect your mobile devices to the MY PASSPORT 2.4 or 5 WiFi and open Plex on your mobile device.....you should then see all of your videos with all the artwork and descriptions.
Hope this helps someone. Let me know if my instructions are not clear enough and I will take some time and go over them.
Good luck!
Dumping the SD card worked well, there are different ways to set it up. You can have it copy the whole card or just the new files, and you can set it to do it as soon as you insert the card or wait until you hit a button to start the process. Same thing with a USB stick (or really any storage with a USB interface, I used a small SSD a couple times).
The file structure for transfers is very good, sub directories are created and date and time stamped each time you do a transfer.
Uploading is where the issues are.
I set up a Google drive account and tested it at home before I left, no problems. Apparently my test files weren't very big because when I got on the road I discovered (but only after a few days) that large video files wouldn't transfer. So, my jpg and thm files were uploading but not my mp4's.
I also found out that wifi with a splash screen (like most hotels use) are very clunky to use with the interface. It often took me several tries to get the drive connected to the wifi, and a couple times I just gave up. I'm not sure exactly how the interface/app works, but it seems like it might still need your phone nearby to be successful (didn't appear that I could set it to start the upload then leave).
It's got a mini webserver built in where you can set up the drive and how it operates, but functions are strangely divided between the app and the webserver. I wound up just saving the link to the internal web page on my phone next to the app because i regularly needed to use them both. They do include all the documentation on the drive so that's handy.
I tried several times to upload a whole folder and it did it once but never again. I wound up having to upload hundreds of individual files (which I had to click on one at a time in the app) each night. I think that's part of how I initially missed that the mp4's weren't uploading.
Anyway, the concept is great and the hardware is very good (the labels for the lights and the buttons are _very_ difficult to see though). If you just want to automatically dump files from pretty much any media automatically it works great. If you had a bunch of USB drives floating around and wanted to back them all up, this would be the way to do it. Dumping my camera every night worked great. It's the automatic upload and the app and web interface where things get temperamental. If they could get the software side of it straightened out this would certainly be a 5 star device.
If you have a computer with you (I did not) you can just plug it in and read it as an external drive and upload from there with no issues (even whole folders).
If you were going to leave it in one place, on one wifi network, and use it as a NAS it would do that very well (you have the option of making the whole drive accessible to the network). Stick your SD card (or whenever) into it and in minutes everything is accessible to the whole network.

Setting up this product is no easy task, there no step by step setup guide in the box itself, I had to go and checkout YouTube videos from other people who had this device.
This product is very unreliable not stable at all with the app, here are the following reasons why???
-Need to connect to both wi-fi's your own network and the hard drive itself to be able to connect via your computer.
-50% of my Jpeg pictures , I was not able to open them, reason being from my iPhone XS max to hard drive, the hard drive would somehow interpret them as HEIC file, which made no sense, and not able to open the file in the app itself.
-2 min 4k video playing right off the hard drive would buffer every 2 secs very very frustrating in fact all 4k videos it would do this , 2 to 4 mins long!!!
-Exit app and go back in , go to storage files it would take 2 min to load my folder of 40 pics and 5 videos, and somehow the video files would not be able to play again.
-Charging the device takes a very very very very long time, 1 dot takes 2 hours or so and you have 4 dots in total
go figure total time.
-turning off the device , it is trail and error, took me so time.
-Hard drive inside is always spinning , even with no activity.
-The box itself heats up too, not long after you use it.
This hard drive will be returned back to Amazon today!!!
