Price: This new Alexa device offers better value than the Echo Spot. At C$85 +tx /each (when buying 2), they are very well priced.
Sound: Upon powering it on and updating the software, I felt that the sound was clearer than on the Echo Spot. The speaker group/multi-room feature worked well when pairing with an Echo Dot (3rd Gen). Worked well with my Amazon Music playlists using voice commands.
Display: The display is of a more practical size and shape than on the Echo Spot. It works beautifully as a video intercom (if more than one device) using the drop-in feature. Drop in is also useful for telling the dog to get off the couch when at work. Worked with Prime Video using the touchscreen to navigate. However, I was not successful using voice commands with Prime Video (other than basic stop or turn up/down volume).
Integration: It integrates well the the Ring Video Doorbell Pro (requires free smart phone app) and the screen shape allows for a decent full screen view of the front door. This is a significant improvement over the Echo Spot. It also integrates well with the TP-Link Kasa Smart Switch/Dimmer/3-way Switch (requires free smart phone app). I own 13 of them and they all work as intended with this device and all my other Echo devices. Worked well with the MINGER Alexa strip lights (requires free smart phone app). Setting up zones and assigning Echo devices, smart devices, and preferred speakers to zones are powerful features. I do not need to specify the name of the specific rooms where I want to turn on the lights because the assigned Echo device for the zone will control the lights for the zone that I am in when issuing the command “Alexa, lights on."
Wifi: The wifi connection is solid. I have a hidden network and it is not uncommon to encounter products that drop the network over time but so far, all my Echo devices (including the Show 5) have remained connected and reconnected without problems following a power outage. With any smart home and Alexa related devices, I recommended configuring a router for IP addresses reservations for these devices to avoid possible conflicts.
Camera: If using the video calling features, an Echo Show 5 Stand (sold separately) may be required due to the awkward camera angle. However, as for the Spot, the stand does not allow the device to tilt downward (the best it can do, is perpendicular to the table). The built-in shutter works well and was one of the main selling features for me. This device worked well with Skype.
Power adapter: The cord of the included power adapter seems a little short for my needs and limits the height/distance options for the device. However, this was not a deal breaker.
Miscellaneous: Setup took about 5 minutes including the software update and then I was able to access the local weather, to set alarms, timers, reminders, and add items to shopping list.
UPDATE: five months later, I still use it. However, I must say that it sometimes does not hear me and I really have to shout at it. In contrast, the whisper mode works great and it is an excellent feature for when you want to send a command without disturbing the rest of the household.

First I thought Echo Show 5/Alexa is only useful to show you the clock, tells you the weather, play some radio/music and connects to your Ring/smart home devices. Yeah So, the phone does it too! Boy, was I wrong!!! After using it for a few days, I found some very useful functions that helps me as a mother!
1) Quickly connects to Ring - It automatically shows you the front door as soon as someone rings your door bell and only take less than 3 seconds to load vs. trying to locate your phone and open the Ring app and wait for it to load (which takes like forever btw), and by the time it loads, the person is already gone. I was VERY impressed by how quickly it connects to my Ring and check who’s at my door.
2) Checking in on your kids - I can use the camera on the Echo Show 5 to check on my daughter and see how she’s behaving in class in her room while me and my husband work from home (we both have to be on the phone or in meetings everyday). You can simply say - “Drop In” to “xxx” Room and the other person doesn’t need to pick up the call and you can just take a “peak” of the room and communicate with the other person.
3) Make an Announcement - How often have we yelled at our kids from the 1st floor and ask them to come down for dinner? Echo will do this for you. It will broadcast what you are saying either per device or by group (eg:2nd floor)
4) Light Switch - this is the function that my daughter loves the most. We have a Belkin Wemo smart switch set up in her room and back then, we use our phone to control her room if we are away on a trip. With the light switch function, she can simply stay in her bed and turn on/off the switch by telling Alexa or turning on/off on the screen.
5) Phone Finder - Let’s be honest, we’ve been through it ALL THE TIME, trying to find our phone JUST BEFORE we are about to get out the door to beat the traffic and we ended up spending at least 10-15 mins each time trying to find it, eg: bending down to look under the sofa, going to the powder room, running up stairs checking every room, under the bed, and went back downstairs and found it beside the microwave. Being a mother of 2, I constantly find myself losing my phone or my daughter’s gadget. For this function, I needed to download a “Phone Finder for Alexa”. Then i go to my Echo Show 5 and ask Alexa to add a phone finder device. It will then give me a token number to enter on my phone per say. Remember, 1 token per device, otherwise, all device will ring at the same time. Once that’s done, you can locate your phone by saying your phone’s name and it will ring based on the ringtone that you set.
6) Facetime with friends and family. Your Echo Show will hook up your phone and the person you are dialing to will see your phone number.
So in the end, we ended up buying another Echo Show 5 and 2 Echo Show 8 during Prime day and can’t wait for it to come!!
We had an Echo Dot in our house when it first came out, then moved to Google Home. Back then we thought the Echo had better voice recognition and could hear us better and understand us more consistently. Now it's completely opposite. Some commands it simply doesn't understand at all while Google Home has no problems whatsoever. Other times it doesn't understand artists that we ask it to play (again, while Google has no problem). And when asking to view cameras around our house, there are a few that it refuses to understand the name of no matter how we try to pronounce it or change it's spelling (name: Ky's Camera).
Skype works fine though would be great if there was a way to launch and make a call using touch (and even better to re-name some contacts so they're easier understood).
Sound quality for music is fine, though it's tuned really weirdly - almost like they tried to overemphasize the amount of low-end to such an extent that Alexa sounds really strange.
I do like that the camera has a physical slider built right in.
Overall it works fine, and I guess at this price ($65 on sale) you couldn't really ask for much better, but if you're fine to spend a little bit more, there are better options out there.
Last bit of rant: why can't this be powered by USB?!?! That 12V plug is big and bulky and annoying.
