EXTRA LARGE LAVA ROCKS: Our 3”-6” Lava Rock can be used on their own or as a filler in your fire feature. We recommend using lava rock as a filler if you have a deep fireplace or firepit. For a complete design, add fire glass on top to cover the fire rock thoroughly so it will not be detectable.
FOR FIRE PIT, FIRE BOWL OR FIREPLACE: Because lava rock is economical, it is the perfect choice as the first filler that goes into a very large and/or dept fire feature to cover up the gas piping and tubes. Once the lava rock is spread the way you want it, add a layer of fire glass to create a truly astonishing design that will instantly become the focal point of your home or yard.
LONG-LASTING: Lava rocks are volcanic so they can withstand the most extreme temperatures without any change in shape. They offer durability and provide a low maintenance and cost-effective natural element that looks great as part of your indoor or outdoor decor. They can be used with liquid propane or natural gas.
GORGEOUS & PRACTICAL: It does a great job of covering the floor of a fire feature, effectively hiding the unseemly pipes and tubes which are often visible in gas fireplaces or fire pits. These met my expectations perfectly! Not too dusty either. These rocks helped make my fireplace look great!

They were easy to install. All I did was pour the rocks all around the outside edge of my fireplace for a finished look. Kind of like a picture frame if you will!

I probably could’ve gotten by with a smaller bag. I bought the 10 pound bag with a lot to spare. My fireplace is small and measures 17” deep, 20” wide in the back and 30” wide in the front.

Got this in two sizes, 1/8-1/2" and 1/2-3/4". Used the smaller as a substrate to set my burner on. The previous homeowner burned wood fires in a gas fireplace, so some of the fire brick was pitted. Used this to create a level surface. Also, after placing the burner, I filled in the area between the H-burner with this to create a level surface for my vermiculite. Worked wonderfully and created a beautiful result. Think of it as gravel, but the individual small rocks don't explode when heated. Very important for an indoor fireplace.

The larger size of lava rock I used to cover the burner and combined it with the glass. Glass and the lava rock were close in size and created, in my opinion, a very pleasing look. Some people like pure glass, some people like pure rock, I am in-between. You can use this as a substrate too, and cover it completely with about 20 lbs of glass in my case. Cuts down on how much glass you have to buy.

Nope, these rocks aren’t anywhere near a fireplace. Neither are my orchids. I got these lava rocks because they were the right size and a great price. I don’t care how uniform they are, since they’re inside planters and mesh pots. As long as they don’t fall out, they’re big enough. Lightweight enough not to crush plastic pots, but heavy enough to balance top heavy plants.
I did rinse the rocks before using for repotting because of the dust to avoid clogging the roots. I rinse leca, too. No problem with chemicals, just dust that could harm roots/plants. These rocks work really well for epiphytes if that’s what you’re looking for. I have no opinion on their original use…

Our Jøtul natural gas fireplace's original lava stones were dusting down and there were gaps developing on the heat tray, so we decided to see about getting replacement rocks.

I decided on this item based largely on the reviews and for the sizes inside this package. Other choices mostly seemed to be pea-sized, which were too small, and this one offered 1/2 inch to 1 inch rocks, which sounded about the right size we needed. This 10 lb bag (received in its own box with other items on my order) was indeed far more than we needed, but it worked out well as we could go to town on making the hearth stones more realistic than even with what originally that came with the fireplace.

I'd say the sizes actually range from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Some or the rocks appeared to be glazed and heavier than normal lava rocks, and others the perfect pocked appearance lava rocks usually look like. Then added some rock wool using tweezers to pull thin strands and land them on between the rocks to give the fireplace that glowing ember appearance and it's now all ready for another cold winter!

One tip - and only if you're confident enough to work with the lava rocks without the glass insert placed in (meaning open, although I wouldn't recommend it, but I've been known to throw caution to the wind when I shouldn't) - while testing the flame flow and appearance, keep a pair of long tongs handy to move the rocks around to even out the flames, or even to remove any lava pieces that happen to whistle (some do as they are pretty porous) and replace with other rocks. I'm only glad I did as I would've had to wait for the glass and top assembly to cool down again to replace 2 big ones I used that happened to screech whenever the flames came on.

I purchased this product as a means of controlling fungus gnats in my house plants. I removed the top inch of pot soil and replace it with the lava rock. Not only did it eliminate the gnats, it also gives the plants a very nice natural look! I’m purchasing another bag so that all my plants have the same look. Although some reviews say the product had a lot of dust, the bag I received had very little. The pebble size was also perfect for my need.
UPDATE: Oct 2019, one year later, unfortunately my success with fungus gnats was short lived. I’ve tried everything, watering with hydrogen peroxide, sticky stiks, need oil, ACV & dishsoap, organic insecticide sprays ... I’ve extensively researched and gave it my best shot but I can’t seem to get rid of fungus gnats long term. Sadly it’s time to face reality and get rid of my plants. If you’re thinking of buying this to control fungus gnats, I wish you luck. If you’re buying it to improve the finished look of your houseplants, I do highly recommend it. I hope this update is useful.
