So I have been waiting a couple of months to write this review so I could give my best opinion of this product. I have separated my review into my initial opinions and my current opinions of this product. Scroll down for a TL;DR for my friends who don’t want to read my excessively long review. I preordered the Garmin Vivofit3 after I destroyed my Fitbit Zip with my sweat (tmi maybe?). After the death of my tracker I wanted something I could wear on my wrist like a watch so I could see my steps through the day and see the time. I thought “I know the Fitbit life, let me branch out!” and so I stumbled upon Garmin! I viewed the previous Vivofit2 and Vivofit 1 and saw that they were coming out with a Vivofit3. After looking at the previous models I was sold on the Vivofit3. The move IQ technology seemed really cool and convenient and the improved wristband seemed solid. I was stoked, I thought it would be cool to be one of the first people to own the Vivofit3 and have people look at what I had to say about it first! And so I preordered and impatiently waited until it arrived on May 6th. It arrived beautifully packaged with no damage. Setting it up was a breeze and the app worked well. <<< Please keep in mind this is in May 2016.The Garmin Vivofit3 includes the device, a wrist band, and instructions for use.Initial Review:The wrist band is a bit different because it is a click-and-twist type lock for it instead of the traditional watch band style. It is large enough for my manly sized wrist but I can see where some may have an issue if they have petite wrists. I don’t particularly care for the way you have to wear the band on your wrist because the lock gets in my way but that’s neither here nor there. To access different screens on the device you push the small button. I thought this was awesome because I was used to the shake and tap the Fitbit Zip uses. You can also change the display to show 2 things at once, such as the time and everything else flowing on the bottom of the display. If you want to record your own activity you can hold down the button until it says “Start” and it will begin to record your activity. To stop you do the same until it says “Stop”. To sync you hold the button until it says “Sync” and the same is done for pairing your device to your app. You can also hold the button until it says “About” to see information about the device.Other cool features:- The Vivofit3 allows the user to set the goal step for each day OR use “Auto Goal” which will calculate a goal for you based on how you did the previous day!- A beep will remind you to move when you haven’t moved in a while (but you can turn this beep off). A bar at the top of the display will also indicate how long you haven’t been moving for. You know you’ve been lazy when you see a looooooong red bar across the top of the display.App:The app for the Garmin watches is a bit confusing. It is not nearly as simple as the Fitbit app because it includes a lot more information. I mainly just use the “Snapshot” screen and swipe through to see how I am doing. To see your move IQ activities you have to go to the “Calendar”. The app allows you to set up your Vivofit3 (because they don’t include a fob to be able to do it from a computer). You can set an alarm which will beep, turn off the beep if it annoys you, change the display, set the time you typically go to sleep, and a whole bunch more. The app synced fairly nicely to my Vivofit3 and I rarely had issues….in the beginning.Current (September 2016):I do not recommend this device.Sometime in June, at least I think it started then, an update was released on the app. This caused my Vivofit3 not to sync! I eventually figured out that I had to pair my device every time I wanted to sync. And I do mean Every. Single. Time. This was outrageous and I emailed Garmin about it but never did hear back. I even looked up to see if I could return my device but I was out of the return window.Fast forward to now and they updated the app again so now I only have to have my location and Bluetooth turned on, open the app, press the button on my device until it says “Sync”, turn location and Bluetooth off then on again, and THEN it will sync. Still obnoxious. One thing I have noticed about owning a wrist band style fitness device is that it LOVES to count steps. I joke with my friends about how cool it is that I get 1,000 steps just stirring a pot! But in all honesty, I think this is to be expected. It is comical though when the move IQ says I was swimming when I didn’t (all I can think is that my sweet dance moves tricked it).I have also noticed that this device scratches very easily. Within the first month I had dozens of very small hair-line scratches on the display and the button. I gave in to buying a screen protector whenever I got a very deep scratch on the display. I highly recommend you get a screen protector if you buy this! The last thing that makes me regret ever buying this device is the wrist band. I can’t even with this wrist band. Countless times I have been going about my day only to look at my wrist and see that my device is gone! Luckily I have only lost it outside once. But the panic is real. The lock is a joke and it is the reason I refuse to go swimming with my device on. I am going to cough up the money to buy one of the generic traditional wrist bands for my device because I am tired of playing hide and seek with it.CONCLUSIONThis device is nothing more than a glorified watch. It is terrific at telling time, but everything else is subpar. I do not recommend this device. If you do feel so inclined to purchase it then I highly recommend you purchase the Garmin Vivofit 3 Screen Protector [Full Coverage][4 Pack], ArmorSuit MilitaryShield - Lifetime Replacements - Anti-Bubble / Touch Responsive / Ultra HD Premium Shield for it. If I wasn’t a poor college student that spent $106.99 on this device, I wouldn’t use it anymore. I hope this review helps someone out there.TL;DRLooks nice until you wear it and it gets scratched up. Syncing is a pain with the app. It will fall off of your wrist. Count’s how many steps your arm has made. Glorified watch.
