I wanted an extreme cold weather solution that didn't require me to wear a coat or jacket, and this is it. I'm 5'9" 220 lbs. and I ordered a size Large-Short. These coveralls are light weight (relatively speaking), have a great silhouette, and are extremely warm! Speaking of warmth, I tried them on with nothing but a pair of thin thermals underneath on a 36 degree day and started sweating while outside just walking around. So they are too warm for temperatures above 30 degrees. However, the next day the temp dropped to 3 degrees (-15 with the windchill) and I felt a slight chill inside the suit with a pair of light weight thermals on underneath.
I would wear these when the temperature is 25 degrees or below and would wear minimal clothing underneath until the temp drops below 15 degrees. From 15 degrees down into the negatives, I would be sure to layer up with a pair of fleece lined pants and a wool sweater underneath to ensure adequate warmth.
Quick Story - Tickets for the recent Chiefs/Dolphins playoff game here in Kansas City were only $40 due to the -6 degree (-25 degree windchill) temperatures. (Those tickets are normally $300-$500 each) Had my wife and I owned these coveralls at the time, we would have thrown these on, along with a balaclava, wool hat, insulated Mitts, insulated boots and attended that game! Unfortunately we just didn't have the right gear at the time to endure those extreme temps. (By the way over 60 people who attended that game ended up in the ER being treated for hypothermia and/or frostbite)
So whether its standing in the cold at a -25 degree football game or working outside in 0 degree temps, we think we've found the solution.
Finally, mine came with all metal YKK zippers and metal snaps. So for those saying theirs came with plastic zippers, you might want to look into whether you received authentic Carhartts. (Unless they've changed their materials since the complaints)
