Shadow Deal (The Good Necromancer Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

I used to practice necromancy. I could communicate with the dead and acquire forbidden secrets.

But necromancy is a dirty business. I abandoned the dark art when a demon double-crossed me and killed my wife. I have lived in quiet solitude ever since.

Now the demon has returned from the other side and wants to eliminate me once and for all.

Word on the street? He wants to hang my head on a necklace to complete his collection of dead necromancers.

Sheeeeet…

So here I am, back in the game. You know, making deals with grim reapers, casting dark spells, binding souls to dead bodies for protection. Typical necromancer stuff.
But I’m channeling my powers for good this time. When I’m done, this demon will beg me for mercy.

Harry Dresden meets Alex Cross in this electrifying urban fantasy series by Michael La Ronn that will keep you spellbound.

An entertaining read. More comedic than dark. I'm going to read the series.

Hits the ground rolling and only speeds up as it goes!

Fan of Harry Dresden? Anita Blake? this book is right down your alley!

Follow along as Lester Broussard unwillingly slides back into his old black magic ways. Seven years ago he was the greatest necromancer in the St. Louis area, but that was before he screwed up and made a deal with a demon that lost him his wife and son. Now, he’s dragged back into the game by his boy’s girlfriend . . . and the demon that destroyed his life.

What can one washed up, miserable old man with bad knees do?

Great fun, love the whole premise and Lester and his acquaintance's both supernatural and non, were a real joy to read.

I absolutely loved this book! Lester is a great character. In fact, all the characters are awesome, including the demons.

This is well written with great world building. We're given just enough backstory to appreciate the characters' motives without detracting from the current situation. It somehow makes the reader feel like we've known these characters for a while.

I appreciated this clean read with no cursing (except a few 'sheeeeets') and no sexual situations. It's just a fun fantasy read and I'd love to read more about how Lester is going to use magic for good.

I appreciated that this was a Good Necromancer, I get tired of a evil necromancer character. It was a beautiful way of writing a story and I really enjoyed getting to go on this journey.

I chose this book because I like urban fantasy and the necromancer idea appealed to me. The story flowed well for me and I was not disappointed. There were some spots that felt a little slow to me, and I was a bit creeped out by the spiders (I don’t like them in real life) but overall I liked it enough to keep reading this author. I have already purchased another of his books (a pick your own story with a legal theme, which is fun because I’m a lawyer) and I intend to continue with this necromancer series too.

The author is not bad and I certainly wish him the best. But I couldn't even finish this book which is VERY rare for me. His setup of the rules for this world were trite at best. Maybe he improves in later books, but I have no intention of finding out.

I've read a decent bit of urban fantasy, and this book was a great opportunity to look a different side of a familiar genre. The main bit was that the main character was a reluctant participant in the "fantastic powers he possessed." That's a little different than someone operating relatively freely with theirs. The backstory of what left him in that mindset was pretty solid, as well as the events that necessitated him returning to necromancy. But, the best part for me was how the author dealt with the aspect and mechanisms of necromancy. It's such a cool concept in general, and in practice there are definitely ways that the handling thereof may be fumbled, but in this case it was a positive part of the book as a whole.

Action and more action.

Lester Broussard is trying to live on through his guilt and grief after tragically losing a family. He has given up his former life as a necromancer and has promised himself he will not return to it. Old friends and old enemies will not leave Lester be, and he is forced back into a world of darkness.

This book has fast pacing with wonderfully descriptive writing. The magic system is unique. It is a great take on the world of the dead, ghosts and demons, and the action scenes are vivid and dramatic. This is a good compact start to this series and I recommend it to all readers.
