An Ordinary Boy. A Magical Amulet. A Dragon-Sized Destiny He Never Saw Coming...

Kids 8-12 love this soaring new series about kids who shapeshift into magical creatures to protect the world!
★★★★★ Gold Medal Winner—Readers' Favorite Book Awards

For 12-year-old Connor Pendridge, moving to the sleepy island of Lore seemed like the most boring move ever. But from the moment he arrives, he’s chased by mythical monsters only he can see! Connor thinks he’s going crazy until a mysterious wizard named Merlin hands him a dragon amulet and reveals that his move to Lore was no accident—it was his destiny.

Connor was born to be a hero, and the amulet contains the magic of Excalibur, giving him the power to shapeshift into a mighty dragon so he can save the world from evil!

Unfortunately, Connor doesn’t know the first thing about being a dragon—like how to fly, breathe fire, or control his suddenly massive appetite! Luckily, he has some magical friends to guide him, including a girl who can turn into a unicorn, and a boy who morphs into a griffin.

But when an ancient sorceress returns to conquer the world, will Connor soar as the legendary dragon of his destiny—or will he go down in flames?

Fun takes flight in this action-packed fantasy series that will entertain kids 8-12, reluctant readers, and adults! Kids who love dragons will love being inside the mind of a boy learning to become a heroic dragon. Families looking for a great read-aloud adventure will find it hard to put down. Unlegendary Dragon includes illustrated character profiles and is perfect for fans of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Wings of Fire.

My four year old enjoys the unicorn. My 9 year can't put the book down! This book captures everything she adores, dragons, magic, mystery, history, all in the perspective of someone close to her age. Conner is 12 and on the move again. You won't regret this purchase!

Awesome retelling of classic storyline. My son is 12 so relates well to main character connor. He loves how the magic spells are backwards words :).

We loved this book! The slightly edgy, sarcastic tone of the main character made this book lighthearted enough to not be too scary for my 7 yr old, but funny and adventurous enough for my 11 yr old to also enjoy it.

Twelve-year-old Connor is moving again, much to his chagrin. His single mom has selected a small, sleepy town on an island in New England. Connor is not looking forward to Lore, a town that lives up to its name.

In the first book of a series, Connor experiences strange dreams and visions of mythical creatures. A mysterious woman reveals to him he must protect an amulet and become a hero. Connor will meet an assortment of interesting characters that middle-grade readers will want to emulate. Lots of humor, fun dialogue, adventure, action, and fantasy are woven in the fast-moving plot.

Recommended especially to eight to twelve year old readers, but a fun read-aloud for adults choosing to share with children or students.

My son is ten and is really into this book. I’ve been reading it to him so I’ve enjoyed the story as well. It’s got a lot of captivating dialogue and writing so it keeps kids interested.

RL Ullman has a great middle grade voice. If you like a classic hero's journey tale with elements of magic and King Arthur in the present day, you'll love this book!

My son was very excited to start a new series by this author!

*** NOTE: I received an advance eBook copy and this is my honest review ***

Pre-judging this book from the cover art (I know, one should never do that...) coupled with the track record of its author, I had semi-high hopes for its quality. But, I've been hornswaggled before, so...
Fortunately, in this case I most assuredly was not!

I read this with my 11-year-old (he and I taking turns), so his reactions are also included in this review.

The writing is taut, with no flowery diatribes. It also does not 'talk down' to its intended audience. The characters are well-drawn and we gained empathy for them quickly, becoming invested in their lives and the larger story.

Chapters are not overly long, with no major cliff-hangers at the ends - Perfect for a one-a-night reading session before bed, and most chapter beginnings offer a one- or two-paragraph recap of what happened last, to get you back up to speed with where you left off (nice touch, Mr. Ullman).

The few descriptions of violence were well-handled and age-appropriate, nothing to overly scare younger readers, but also would not bore 'Tweens and Teens.
As to ages served; honestly, anyone from 10 to 90 (but not 91 ;-) ) should be able to read this book and enjoy it. I am 58 and had a ball getting into the story!

There are a couple of 'new' Arthurian myths introduced, but nothing radical that would alter most people's view of the classic tales. I thought the new elements made sense and brought stability into this story.

I found only two spelling errors in the ARC copy I received; hopefully they were caught and corrected in the retail version.

Overall, both my son and I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and also both agree that *several* more sequels would be most welcomed.

Final rating: *****
