I eat a lot of fresh fish, much of which I get at the Union Square Greenmarket in NYC. Stephanie is there once a week and I shop there as often as possible. In the past, we've discussed and exchanged recipes, so when her book came out I jumped at the opportunity to order it. It's great! Some of the recipes are quite unique and so far every one I've tried has been a success. Til now I've been using Mark Bitman's Fish cookbook. This is a nice change.

As someone who loves both sea and bay scallops, I first turned to the scallop recipes upon receiving The Fisherman’s Wife and I was not to be disappointed. Several stand out: The Scallop Ceviche was light, bright and fresh (lemon, lime, and orange juices!), and Stephanie’s Fish and Scallop Ceviche was full bore with whitefish, jalapeno, tomato, and onion. A meal unto itself. The Scallop Gratin II was a rich offering prepared with chive, oregano, panko, and lemon. Great for a winter’s dinner. And the Seared Scallops with Sorrel Sauce was a new experience for me. (The sorrel sauce is also fine with white fish, apparently.)

In addition to these and other numerous fish and shellfish recipes, the book offers interesting insights into the commercial fishing life including stories both amusing and scary, discussions of important environmental and conservation aspects of this industry, and (for me) a useful guide to the basic techniques of fish and shellfish preparation.

Highly recommended!

This is a great cookbook! I cook fish all the time since moving to the east coast where fresh fish/seafood is in abundance - and I've still found recipes in here that I never would have thought of, like blue fish w/ lime and gin - different & delicious, and Laing's Scallop Sashimi - garlic & ginger oil, yeah. That said, even if you're never cooked fish before, this book is a great balance of simple & more detailed recipes, with a nice blurb about each type of fish for folks less familiar with the wide range of fish available beyond the most commercial. Pictured step by step instructions for cleaning fish, shucking oysters, preparing lobster, and cleaning whole squid are great. The photos and real life fish stories are an awesome bonus - I got sucked in reading them all before even trying out a single recipe.

This book's a treasure, from her own recipes to recipes from renowned chefs to her "salty stories" to its message about sustainable fishing. Interesting book by an interesting lady whose experiences take them from eastern Long Island and into the farmers markets of New York City. My husband has always done the fish cleaning, and he has shown me how, but I haven't really tried it myself. The author takes me through how to do each kind of fish step by step. I'm going to really work on this.

Not only are the recipes incredible and the photographs beautiful as well, but the wonderful family stories that Stephanie includes are priceless. You have to get the book just to find out what happened to their lost kitty that hitched a ride to Brooklyn in their truck, took off into Prospect Park when the truck door was opened .. and I won't give away the rest!
