Still a great monitor. I bought another one. And will probably buy a 3rd soon for a dual monitor setup in my office.
Here are hopefully helpful notes for those considering this.
- IPS, sRGB calibrated
- DVI, HDMI, Display Port (full size) and Display Port over USB-C for inputs
- Display Port and USB data out for outputs
- Out of the box this screen will melt your eyes, it’s that bright. Adjustment works well however.
- does not support Thunderbolt
- does support video over USB-C but not enabled out of the box. This is noted on a small supplement in a package of documents about enabled performance mode for the monitor but not on the quick start page. This IS HP’s fault for not being clear and probably regulations for insisting it meet wattage standards for certain certifications.
- does not support chaining over USB-C or any port other than Display Port.
- supports chaining over Display Port up to 4 monitors but past 2 monitors Display Port does not have enough bandwidth to drive 3 or 4 monitors at full resolutions. This is not HP’s fault for the version of Display Port they are using that’s the max. Newer monitors may support newer versions that allow better but you may also be limited by the graphics card in your computer.
- USB-C port is NOT high wattage, only provides 10W back to computer and 15W total to any USB deceives connected to one of the 2 USB-A or single USB-C port. The 4K version does 65W which may still not charge your computer. So check. HP should make this more clear but it is on the device webpage in their stat sheet.
- does not come with a USB-C to USB-C cable. One in the box is an A to C. Make sure you use a quality cable that is properly terminated. It won’t blow up anything like poor cables are doing to Google Pixel phones but you may have issues. This is not HP’s fault. USB-C has been a complete bork by the USB-C implementers forum and they’ve overloaded the cable connection type with confusing layers on capability that are not clearly labeled for the layman.
- has a no dead pixel policy. No idea how getting it serviced is but it’s there.
- manuals are really not in the box and very little of the above is mentioned in the manual. HP should better explain this in the documents.
- for PC at least there is a free app you can download to completely control the device settings from your computer. You can save multiple profiles, change how the panel reacts to rotation, etc. HP does not mention this anywhere and they should.
- includes a height adjustable stand that supports tilt and rotate. Is a screw less mounting design.
- has VESA 100mm bolt mounts on back. No screws are provided.
- no power brick. Straight plug in to the wall.
Overall I’m keeping my 4 star review just for the lack of clarity in the documentation in the box as mentioned in my previous review. That said the monitor itself is great and super happy with the purchases of them.
-x
This monitor is excellent. I too bought it based on Wirecutter article and after researching tons of options (HP makes way to many monitors as do most without a lot of differences). This was a little more than I wanted to pay but I'm glad I did. Out of the box this monitor came with a factory calibration sheet. It was pretty much dead on for me with the only adjustment I made being turning down the brightness which is super bright out of the box. I have seen no ghosting mentioned here or in Wirecutter article. Adjustability is good and has plenty of port options and includes a couple of useful cables. I have also had no issues with app compatibility in Windows 10.
I took off one star for no info in the box on where to get the instruction manual and poor labeling on the device itself for some of the ports (the USB ones in particular are poorly marked as one of them is a in only to the hub in the monitor for instance and they only support up to certain wattage for USB-C which should also have been clearly marked). I found the info on HP's support site but it was harder to locate than it should have been. There is also an excellent utility that lets you set multiple profiles and do everything else you can in the OSD, but again no mention of this in the box.
This weekend I'm going to try hooking my Surface to the Display Port while keeping desk computer on HDMI. Hopefully will not have issues switching.
Overall very satisfied with the purchase after a week of use.
I was seeking color accuracy for still photography and video editing but also do tons of home office stuff. Its native color accuracy is dead on and resolution is better than my eyes can handle (ie tiny text is super sharp but so tiny I cant read it.). I tried to use an x-bright color calibration device and the result was less accurate and less well matched between the two monitors than when set to their default.
Personal technical details:
For office stuff I use MS Office and Adobe Acrobat but my #1 passion is music recording. My go to programs are Avid ProTools, Izotope plugins, Magix Vegas Pro, New Blue Effx, Corel PhotoPaint, Adobe Photoshop, and recently been learning Adobe Premiere and the rest of Adobe's creative suite, and Avid's Media Composer. My studio computer is a self-assembled PC with intel MB, i7 chip, 96GB RAM, and dual Boland Monitors. For this, my lower budget office and main video computer I bought a refurbished HP workstation with dual xeon chips, 64GB Ram, and two of these HP Z27n G2 27" LED LCD Monitors and I'm happy as a clam.
Top reviews from other countries
Looked at reviews online which all seemed pretty good of the ones I found. I didn't need a 4k model, this model (HP Z27n G2 27")
and resolution looks fantastic, (had it about 2 weeks now.) I happened to notice that Amazon themselves were selling it for 450. So I snaped it up as other sellers on amazon wanted a fare bit more.
Anyway it's a great monitor with lots of ways of connecting it and it looks fantastic, I've had no issues to complain about.
Take care.
Now I'm trying to plug the 2021 Macbook Pro (with M1 chip)'s USB-C into the monitor's USB-C port, and the monitor doesn't detect an incoming signal (or the computer doesn't detect a monitor?). Very confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
