She hates him.
He loves getting under her skin.

Travis King is the worst kind of a**hole.
He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards.
He’s cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes.
And I hate him.

It wouldn’t matter so much if he were avoidable.
But considering he’s my older brother’s best friend and roommate, I see him more than I’d ever want to. His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are wasted on such an arrogant man, which makes me hate him even more.

Even though I’ve had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren’t mutual and he’s made that very clear. He’s always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed. I’ve succumbed to his manw**re ways, but that doesn’t change a thing.

Because the King is about to get played at his own game—and lose.

Checkmate, King.

This is book 1 in the Travis & Viola duet and must be read first. Suggested for mature readers only.

★★★★! Checkmate: This is War, book 1 of 2. Contemptuous sex & fun bantering, but mostly denial & sabotage when Travis & Viola are forced to share a house!

“Great, Viola has officially broken my dick.”

Books in the Checkmate duet should be read in order:
Book 1: Checkmate: This is War
Book 2: Checkmate: This is Love

Checkmate: This is War (book 1) follows college student Viola Annabelle Fisher, Vi, V, Lola and marketing executive Travis King as they find themselves living under the same roof sans Drew, Viola’s brother and Travis’ best friend as their referee.

Having grown up together their tight friendship was derailed in their teens shifting into a hate-disdain relationship of mostly cheap shots, fun bantering, teasing and insults.

In over their heads, their game is complicated when contempt and pent-up energy morphs into sexual frustration, dry-humping and heated moments of sex against walls and furniture.

Seven words to describe Travis King: Dirty-talker, jaded, horny, cocky, non-committal, commanding and conflicted.

Seven words to describe Viola Annabelle Fisher, Vi, V, Lola: Smart, loner, ambitious, unsocial, blunt, feisty and conflicted.

Checkmate: This is War, told from dual POVs, is a tempestuous relationship filled with hilarious situations, steamy sex scenes and just the right amount of romance. Aside from detailed sex with prior one-night stands this was a funny, fast paced and hot read all the way to the beyond perfect ending leading right to book 2, Checkmate: This is Love for the conclusion of their story.

“Travis King and his royal cock have completely ruined me for anyone else.”

Update. I just found out Kennedy Fox is a writing duo. How bad this book is that even the authors didn't claim credit for it? Whoever authors are behind the name "Kennedy Fox" know this book is bad. I wouldn't read anything by these authors if I knew their real name.

UNSAFE BOOK WARNING UNSAFE BOOK WARKING

I don't recommend this book at all! It has almost every trope I hate in "romance" books. Mainly

OW

Doormat heroine, Manwhore, cliffhanger, slutshaming, boyish hero pretending to be a man, hero smelling like other women when he's with heroine. Ugh.

This isn't romance at all.
It's not new adult either. It's just plain bad porn.

Review to come or not, honestly I hate writing negative reviews, but I might update with more on safety issues.

Damn you Cliffhanger, i need book 2 now !!!!!!!!!!

That bitch travis better have some fucking explanation to what did i just read.

This is war, is one of those "huge MISUNDERSTANDING" stories, if the two main characters just sat down and talked, this book would have ended around 18%. Travis and Viola were friends when they were kids but at her 13th birthday she heard him talking about how pethetic she is, and loner with no friends or life, That's when her attitude towards him changed she hated his guts and continued hating him for a decade after that. i don't really blame her, he's the worst guy i have ever read about. Liar, manipulator, womanizer, cheater, THE WORST GUY EVER! Viola was kind of naive and reckless , although i admired her, she was sweet and nerdy.

This is War is the story of Travis King and Viola Fisher, one time friends, now enemies. Viola thinks Travis is nothing more than a manwhore, and he thinks she's a stuck up prude. So you can imagine the craziness that ensues when they're stuck living together for two weeks. Without the supervision of Vi's brother, Travis' roommate, it's hard for these two to calm their urges to cause the other bodily harm. But when they get their hands on each other it's definitely not to cause pain...well only the good kind.

I absolutely loved Travis and Viola's very volatile relationship! It definitely frustrated the hell out of me, but it was in the best way possible. I really liked that their characters could get me so involved in their story that I came close to throwing my Kindle across the room and breaking it. I don't like to feel frustrated and it's actually something I usually really really hate, but with this book I didn't mind that that's the mood it got me in. It made me feel like I was a part of their story since I could feel the rage and frustration coming from the characters and those became my own emotions.

Travis was a little hard to like at times when he came off as an unfeeling bastard only looking to get his dick wet. And in all honesty I didn't like him until I was pretty far into the book. But once he started to open up about his own emotions I was right there ready and willing to comfort him. It took awhile but eventually he became the guy worthy of Viola's attention and I loved seeing the subtle changes in him.

The cliffhanger that these authors delivered just about killed me and even though it was already after 3 in the morning I had to start the next book to see what would happen. All I can say about that is be prepared to scream and run onto Amazon to get the next book as soon as you finish this one. This book is definitely a must read and if you haven't picked it up you need to do so as fast as you can.

I love a enemies to lovers set up and I also love it when they're childhood friends all grown up because of all of the extra history we get. Add on the fact that she's his best mate's little sister and I thought I'd love this, but it didn't quite work out for me.

My main issue was that the H was a complete pig. He continued to hook up with others even after something started simmering between them, and, as it was told in alternate fp, we got all the dirty deets of those hook ups. It kind of made me feel sick. He didn't even wash in between. Ewww. *shudders*

I think for me, the thing I love about an enemy to lover set up is the underlying affection - they don't really hate each other at all. In this, in kind of felt like they did. So I missed the feels and just read the lust and smut. It was hot but a bit, well, tawdry for me.

It ends on a cliffhanger, but the story didn't really have that much going on to justify stretching it into a second book tbh. Not a fan of that.

Not a hit for me, but it seems I'm in a minority. Ah well.

This is what I love when I pick up a book and I have no clue which way the story is going to go. One minute you're thinking, I know how this going to end and you think you're safe. That sense of security you have makes you calm because you THINK you know how everything is going to play out. But when you get to the end and read that last sentence, that calmness you felt? Is no longer there. I'll tell what replaces it though: Shock, anger, and straight up panic!!

To say that Viola Fisher and Travis King dislike each other is a serious understatement. Having gone from childhood friends to enemies over the last twelve years has been quite the journey. Deciding to spend her spring break vacation with her brother, Viola is in for one heck of a surprise when she learns she'll be stuck with the man who raises her blood pressure and makes her have bail money on stand by.

"From being head over heels for him as a young girl to loathing him as a woman, Travis King needs to remember the golden rule-never admit defeat. It was game on. >

Travis King is a certified MANWHORE. I'm not going to sugar coat it because it's true. He LOVES women and they love him so it's a win win for everyone. Getting him to remember your name the morning after, that's a different story. The only woman that's been around him long enough happens to also be the same one who wants to castrate him in his sleep but who's complaining right? Being stuck with Viola for the next two weeks couldn't possibly be so bad but Travis is about to find out that he's dead wrong.

 photo PicsArt_10-01-01.38.26_zpsnastobyz.jpg

"She's always been the forbidden fruit, the girl I'm not supposed to want. Over the course of pissing her off and pushing her away, she's grown to hate me more than I believed possible.

The sexual tension, laugh out loud moments, and a villain that had me gripping my tablet so hard because I was imagining choking dat hoe,had me reading at a fast paced speed. I loved Travis and Viola's interaction with each other and I can't even tell you how many times I was giggling at their little war games. They were hot, passionate, and despite everything they went through, they genuinely cared about each other.

Now as for the ending?Holy Crap I need part two right freakin now!!

DNF!
He should be disinfected with bleach.
I was sick of his sex scenes with other women. That's disgusting!
And she should have self-respect.
Yuck:
"After coming at me like a starved animal, still smelling like another girl’s perfume, I should’ve pushed him away. He was with a girl seconds before finding me in the mudroom, yet I couldn’t find the strength to leave."

This book was so not my usual enemies to lovers kind of book that I like!

There were things that I liked and things that I DIDN'T like!So I guess it is a 50-50 for me!

Let's start with the thing that I liked in this book...and if there wasn't a turn of event it would have been a amazing book in my opinion!

1. Loved the cover!

2. This book was intense and H.O.T! There's no denying there! Duhhh...

3. I loved the crush and friendship Travis and Viola had as kids.

4. I really enjoyed their love-hate interactions as adult.

5. I liked how they challenged each other to get on top!

6. In the end I was relived they opened up and we saw the real Travis and Viola without games. Just laying everything out after so many years of hiding their true feelings.

Now the things that made me angry, frustrated, and bumped about the things that were happening!

1. Travis was the worst kind of manwhore I ever read about. I mean I know there isn't a good kind of manwhore but he was just to much!

2. I wanted his dick to fell off! I mean that thing got hard with just a look of every woman who passed beside him. And before you say anything, I know that's the point of a manwhore but that last until he meets the heroine and maybe sometimes a little after meeting her.

3. After reading that they had a crush since teenagers I HATED the way he talked to her! Especially the first time they had sex.No respect for the little girl he had a crush on and shared a friendship with.

4. Viola was unbelievable for putting up with his ass even though he was hot and sexy. Wake up Violet those aren't the qualities to lose you respect over.

5. I lost my interest for the second half of the book. At some point I flipped pages to see the difference I was waiting for but it wasn't coming...Everything got complicated for some reason. Can I just get some credits for having hope until the end...???

6. I started to dislike Travis and how weak he was the second someone touched his dick. And usually not the heroine!

Overall these are my thoughts about this book. If some things didn't happen and the characters were more developed it would have been a great book! But these are my thoughts, someone else might like it. I hope the second one is better!

Enjoy! xxx

Absolutely disgusting.

Viola’s reasons for hating Travis

So basically, I hated myself all through middle school and hated him even more through high school. He toyed with my self-esteem, and I grew to hate him for that, too.

I knew all of that stuff was petty. It was immature and lame, but now after all the years of feeling rejected, I can’t stand being around him. He’s a constant reminder that I’ll never be good enough. He goes out of his way to get under my skin, and I refuse to tolerate it—even if he still affects me in ways I wished he didn't.

“My thirteenth birthday. You made it the worst one I’ve ever had. Thanks, asshole.” The emotions start to surface, so I try to walk past him again before he can respond, but he makes it impossible. “I never said—” I cut him off before he has a chance to deny it. “You were talking to Drew. You said I’d never be anything more than your best friend’s annoying little sister. I was a loner with no friends. That I only had my books and stupid characters, along with a lot of other shitty things. You took pity on me and only befriended me because you felt sorry for me.” “Viola…” “You broke my heart, Travis. I was only a kid, but I trusted you. I held out hope every single day that I’d get to see you, even if just in passing. You didn’t make me feel like a burden to have around. You made me feel special.” I close my eyes, holding the tears back.

She hates his guts but then proceeds to beg him for his dick when he keeps on backing off.

“Fuck me like one of your whores, Travis,” she says as I kiss down her neck. “You’re not a whore,” I tell her, meaning it.

“Can’t I be just for one night?” She sounds desperate, and I can’t find it in myself to deny her any longer.

Now the pig that’s called Travis King

You know there is going to be an issue when the first chapter starts off with the H getting a blow job.

I love a girl who can suck dick like a champ. Watching her tongue lick up my thick vein, pumping blood to my best and biggest asset, sets my body ablaze. She wraps her hand around my shaft, sucks on the tip, and pumps hard until I release inside her delicious mouth.

Now I’m not the type of person to completely right off the H just because he is a manwhore. But the end of the day I’m also human and the fact that I have to actually read about his adventures with OW again and again was annoying. What just was the last straw for me was him getting a blow job from someone else while thinking about Viola.

She wraps her lips around my cock and takes it all in her mouth, making me lose the words I was about to throw back at her. Mentioning Viola at a time like this only makes it worse. Now, I’m picturing her tits bouncing in front of me and the wetness of her lips. “Shit,” I curse, unable to hold back. She moans as she swallows and licks the corner of her mouth. “Mmm…” She crawls between my legs and adjusts her arms over my lap. “Now hopefully you won’t be so tense.” She puckers her lips out, begging for me to give her a kiss of approval.

And then we have the classic double standards. He can fuck anyone he wants but Viola can’t.

“You sleep with every other girl on the planet, but the second I bring a guy home for a good time, you want to beat the shit out of him. You’re the one who gets high-fived for your one-night stands, but God forbid, I want someone to fuck my brains out because you go all Mike Tyson on the guy.” My cock twitches at her words, and I can feel it harden under my sweats. The way she talks is so unlike her, and it takes all the willpower in me to say what’s really on my mind. “You aren’t that girl,” I whisper. “Maybe I want to be,” she whispers back. “Even if just for a night.” Her body is begging for it, and I can see the lust in her eyes.

Travis honestly acted like a teenage boy who just figured out that the purpose of his dick is not only just to pee. His thoughts were so disturbing to read. I know men think about sex and all but like ALL the fucking time. Travis’s life revolved around him getting his dick wet. And him KNOWING all the woman of the world want him.

This book had no plot whatsoever. Just Viola being angry at and Travis for something that happened when they were just teenagers. And Travis thinking from his dick.

THREE CHECKMATE STARS.

"This is war, King." "Game on, princess."

description

From the moment I clapped eyes on the blurb to this story I was sold. Nothing appeals to me more than a 'hate to love you' romance story and this book fills that genre better than most. Kennedy Fox, are a brand new writing duo in the romance writing world and I was impressed by their story telling from the start. This book has plenty of sexual tension, evil arguments and lashings of good old fashioned angst. I couldn't tell you if I've read this author duo before or not simply because they keep their identity a secret, but what I cant deny is that I'll definitely be coming back for more.

description

What did I love?
For the first 50% this was the type of book that I had zero problems reading. It has an easy flow and equally addictive writing style that made the chapters fly by. There was rarely a dull moment and I can honestly say for the most part I was entertained. This duo definitely know how to write erotic action full of scorching heat and I certainly can't say that I was disappointed by their ability to create angsty, angry, tension filled scenes. Overall, this was a book that I enjoyed to read, with plenty of bedtime action and even though I didn't instantly five star this book Kennedy Fox have certainly left an impression.

Why not five?
There wasn't a list of things that I didn't like about this novel, but enough to make me question a full five stars. There were times that I was fully invested in the plot and characters (mostly in the first 50% of the story telling) but equally at times I would find myself getting frustrated with hero and heroine alike and as the story unfolded it confirmed my niggles. As I've already said I can never resist an enemies to lovers story however with that being said this book gave me plenty of enemy and not so much love. Simply put I needed the characters to be a little more lovable, and a lot less clueless.

description

Final thoughts ...
I'm pretty sure this will be one of those romance releases that divides opinion. On the one hand there will be the 'angst chasers' who undoubtably will thrive on what this book has to offer. On the flip side there will be the readers who won't appreciate how far this author duo takes these characters. Love it or loathe it you can't take away the talent from this writing duo and if like me you love a couple to battle it out to the end then this book might just be your next five star read. Enjoy ... kisses.

This was a little meh for me, I didn't think it was very original and so many of the scenes were hard for me to believe. If this book was set around high school students instead of adults, I think the story would have felt more realistic and less juvenile but alas, another book full of pathetic adult characters with no real responsibility in life.

This is a classic love to hate and hate to love kind of story, with Travis being one of the worst man whore characters I've read about in years. He ends up aggressive and angry without sex, and treats women like they're nothing—just deposable holes, to put it crudely.

Viola was an annoying character who couldn't take a stand to save her life. The second Travis walked into the room she basically draped herself across the furniture, all the while pretending that she "hates him" and doesn't want to have sex with him.

The whole premise of their relationship was the fact they were both holding onto a grudge from when they were thirteen?! I mean come on. I've been known to hold a pretty long standing grudge, but holding onto a grudge for ten plus years over a few petty words when you were children is kinda pathetic.

There was also a passage were Viola basically blamed Travis for her self esteem issues as a child because he had so many girlfriends and never looked twice at her. During the time she was making it clear she hated him. So she expected him to what???

Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable book, I finished it all in one night and I have already got the next one lined up. But there were so many issues and so many annoying little tidbits, that I just can't bring myself to rate it any higher.

ALSO: there is a MAJOR cliff hanger and nothing is resolved in the first book. I know this is part of a duo on this set of characters, but it's still annoying lol

Checkmate is a true enemies to lovers romance, which seems to be very popular these days. Now let me say, these two are definitely hostile! Travis is THE definition of a manwhore so of course it causes some riffs but the banter/explosive nature of these two is a lot of fun to witness. Then of course the pranks that Travis and Viola pull on each other to push them farther only adds to the situation; you never know what they'll pull next while trying to one up each other. The farther you get though, you get glimpses as to WHY they're acting this way and it kind of breaks your heart a little. They're both carrying around so much hurt and pain from each other in the past, that now this is the only way they can seem coexist. It's touching how two people can find themselves coming back to each other even after so much time and so much hurt, but these two deserve it.

“He’s the epitome of perfection.
...Too bad a decade later, he’s a complete asshole.
Travis King.
He’s no knight in shining armor; more like a royal jackass. He may look like a prince on the outside, but on the inside he’s a cocky, arrogant womanizer that I want to shove over a cliff.
All right, that might sound dramatic and all, considering I just confessed my feelings about him, but those are feelings of hate...not love.
From being head over heels for him as a young girl to loathing him as a woman, Travis King needs to remember the golden rule—never admit defeat.
It was game on.”

Apart from all of the banter and prank pulling, these two are both not only witty but sassy too. I love the come backs they have and watching how they would each react in certain situations!

“Close your eyes.”
That gets her attention. She jerks her head toward me, furrowing her brows. “Are you joking?”
“What? You don’t trust me?” I ask, the corner of my lips tilting up and giving me away.
“I wouldn’t trust you even if Jesus himself came and blessed your forehead with a Bible in hand.”

Something that seems to gaining ground these days is having two authors cowrite a new book/series under a pen name and not releasing their identities. This is actually a really cool concept, to let their work (not their names) speak for themselves. This can be an easy hit or miss type situation but Kennedy Fox hits it out of the park! I could notice certain areas that were written by different people but overall the story is solid and flows well, no matter the chapter, scene or POV.

One of my favourite parts of Checkmate: This is War was when these characters started to let their guard down and let the other in. They had moments of growth and vulnerability, of hope and chances. Then going from this back to the banter and seeing how it effected them was a nice contrast.

“For some reason, her indifference feels worse than when she greets me with a Hey, asshole or Fuck off, Travis. After all these years, it almost feels like her pet name for me—with a side of hatred.”

I know some readers have problems when the hero is with other woman during a novel, but here I want to tell them to rest easy. Sure, somethings do happen, and are kind of expected, but not while the characters are actually together. I have no qualms about this situation and how it was written and actually feel like it enhanced the story.

When thinking about the heat levels in is books, the first thing that came to mind was: EN FUEGO! Damn this thing is hot! I didn't expect what we got from Viola, but Travis is a dirty talker which is a huge bonus in my books. LOVED IT! And some of the scenes... Yeah, let's just say foggy car windows are the least of your problems.

Not only is this story about the issues between Travis and Viola, but I really enjoyed the added issues for Travis work and how things were struggling there between his boss and other... distractions, shall we call them. It was clever and an interesting way to make the plot multidimensional, while keeping you on your toes because at some point, you know everything is going to exploded. Not only this, but it also gives you a better glimpse into Travis' real character. Yes, he's an alpha but seeing how much he actually does care and is a good guy when he and V aren't at each other's throats brings a whole new side to him.

“As bad as it sounds, I can’t deny how much I want him to use me. I want to use him just as much. I want him to see and feel what he’s been missing out on and if that means giving a part of my soul away to make that point, then I will. Because the truth is, sleeping with Travis or not sleeping with Travis, changes nothing. This is all a game to him, and I don’t plan on losing.”

I'm one of the very few and albeit a tad odd people who LOVE cliffhangers. Seriously, I promise I'm not that weird, but I find them so much fun. There's nothing like when a story is reaching a crescendo and all of a sudden BOOM! You get somewhere good and it cuts off, leaving you hanging. If that doesn't keep you thinking about a book, I don't know what will. Okay, so at the end of Checkmate: This is War, I had to try so hard not to flip to the last page and see how it ended (I know, I'm impatient). I was reading the last chapter and getting a little twitchy because I knew the ending had to be something good from the reviews I had seen online. That was NOT what I expected but holy crap, I started laughing! I loved it! And simultaneously was freaking out and needing the next book. I need it now!!!! I have a theory about what happened at the end but guess I won't know now for another couple of months. *pouty face*

“Hello player, meet the game.”

There are hundreds of books being released every month and with such a saturated market, so many good books can so easily be overlooked. I don't want this to be one of those books. What first attracted me to this book was that I stumbled across a book trailer on Facebook. Those things are so cool and such a neat marketing opportunity, that after watching I instantly added it to my TBR list. When release day rolled around, I immediately one clicked and then devoured this thing! I know that you're always taking a chance on new authors (or coauthors under a pen name) but this was one that I definitely enjoyed. And to think how easily I could've missed out on this, I want to make sure some other people don't! If you want to see it, check out Kennedy Fox's page in Facebook and take a look!

If you want an explosive, captivating, sexy, enemies to lovers and brother's best friend read, Checkmate: This is War is for you! You do not want to miss this one, I'll bet you that. So there's only one thing left to cover: go one click, or be ready to have you King checked.

This is War is a fun read. It wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible either. I didn't have high expectations anyway. It's an enemies to lovers plot, which is personally one of my favorite type of stories! Was it executed right? Yes and no, I'd say.

I had a huge issue with the characters: how immature and childish they were. They're basically adults with Travis being a working man and Viola in her final year at university. But the way they argued with each other screamed teenagers. The plot isn't at all original, but I don't really care about that aspect. Travis is your typical bad boy, sleeps-around-with-everyone kind of guy. Viola is the innocent girl, who's focused on her studies and is also a bookworm. Nothing special about the characters themselves. I'd say they have pretty flat personalities. Why does Viola hate Travis? Because of something he said about her when they were kids. Yes, kids. To me, that's ridiculous. You don't just hate someone with a burning passion because, 10+ years prior, when he was a child, he had said something bad about you. I don't find that believable.

As I've stated previously, both Travis and Viola were somewhat flat characters. I literally have nothing to say about Travis. However, Viola... well, Viola is a very weak MC. She claims to hate Travis throughout 90% of the book, yet the minute he touches her, she forgets everything. Yeah, nah.

“Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a young princess who awaited a prince who would give her everything she ever dreamed of... love, passion, loyalty. He'd be the sweetest, kindest, most heartwarming gentleman a girl could ever ask for. And he'd be perfect.

... Excuse me while I vomit.”

What I did like though was the chemistry between Viola and Travis! So much angst and tension. I'm not really sure this book had a plot besides Viola and Travis constantly arguing and fighting and then not resisting each other hence the need for a second book. However, it was a fast, easy, and entertaining, despite the things that annoyed me. The book was just what I needed at the time! I think the plot actually started at the cliffhanger, which by the way, WAS BIG. I sat there staring because now I need to read the second book to see where things will go!

I don't think I'm very invested in Viola and Travis. Maybe things will change in the second book. However, I'm quite excited for the second duology, which is the story of Viola's brother, Drew and Viola's best friend, Courtney. Both Drew and Courtney are cool characters and I found myself more interested in them than in Viola and Travis and wanting to know more about them.

4.5 “Game On, Princess” Stars

I need to start this attempt to review talking about the ending.

That motherfucking of an ending that had me almost throwing my kindle against the wall. A-L-M-O-S-T. The thing that stopped me to do it was the simple fact that I knew I would need it to read the next book. LOL.

So you would be thinking what is wrong with the ending? Well, its a CLIFFY!!!! Yes, a bastard of a cliffy. Don't say I didn't warn you! BUT please, don't let this fucker stop you from reading the book. If you are sucker for enemies to lovers romance this is a MUST READ for you. Cliffy included. Checkmate: This is War, fill this genre better than most. So man the heck up and READ IT.

And just so you know Ms Kennedy, I’m still in denial. That shit didn't happen. TRAVISSSSSSS!!

Ok after my not so nice rambling about the ending, lets talk about the book. Shall we?

“Viola Fisher may look like your typical book nerd, but it’s all a deception. She’s smart as much as she is feisty, and hell if that isn't hot as sin.”

But she is OFF-LIMITS!!!!! As Drew’s little sister, Travis’s best friend; Viola is like the forbidden fruit, the girl Travis is not supposed to want. But the one that is consuming him with every back and forth, every name-calling, every blush, she is like a drug to him. A drug with no cure.

I loveeeeee Viola Fisher. She is the shit. She’s not just a half feet of pure hatred, NO. She is this feisty yet vulnerable girl who is only trying to protect her heart at all costs.

“He’s the king of all douches, a manwhore and a one-upper.”

He certainly is. A hot as fuck douchebag. An arrogant walking cliche with a sleeve of tattoos that has Viola drooling all over him every time she gets a glimpse of it.

As Viola, Travis has a vulnerable side. A frightening feeling that doesn't let him live the way he would like. The same feeling that push him away from Viola years ago. You see, they used to be “friends” the attraction between them has always been there but then one summer night their relationship changed, and it’s never been the same.

“We’re playing some fucked-up game of cat and mouse and in the end, we’ll realize it’s a trap for both of us.”

After that disastrous night, they grow apart. But the tension didn't seem to lessen. On the country, it got worst. Unbearable. The kind of tension that bleed off the pages.

Their witty back and forth has me laughing my ass off. Their dialogues were one of the best and even though I wanted them to keep talking and never stop, I have to say that at some point I feel like it was too much. Crazy right? But it was just for a minute. And the problem was totally mine. I just wanted more loving less fighting. It was crazy funny but I was dying for the moment when they succumb to each other. It took some time but the moment they gave in.. was like the 4th of July… Fireworks everywhere. Fucking worth it.

Will they jump each other’s bones again or will they go back to try to kill one another? You know you will have to read the book to know the answer, right? So why are you here still reading this?

Bottom line, READ THE BOOK. If hate to love romance is your thing this a book you don’t want to miss. Checkmate: This is War, is a mix of adorkable and sexy with the enough amount of angst to have you trying to pull your hair out. *Ahem* the ending, *ahem*.

So read it. Meanwhile, I will be here NOT SO PATIENTLY WAITING for the next book and secretly stalking Kennedy Fox. LOL

Hot. Sexy. And loads of sexual tension. Checkmate: This Is War by Kennedy Fox was just a fun and entertaining read. I am a sucker when it comes to enemies to lovers and best friends little sister romance trope and so if you can combine the two, then you know you have my full attention.

#ThisIsWar Checkmate

Viola Fisher loathes Travis King. Well to be exact, she hates him with a passion. At first she didn’t hate him that is until he did something to make her upset. Travis is cocky, arrogant, and a womanizer. He loves to rile up Viola and so you can imagine if they had to co-habitat for two weeks while Viola has to stay at her brother’s apartment that he shares with Travis. Yes, that’s right lots of sexual tension and banter. Don’t think Viola is some wallflower that will standby and let Travis intimidate him, because she has no problem letting Travis know how she feels about him. If he pushes, she will push right back. So in this case of chess, will Travis King be making a move that will have Viola Fisher saying Checkmate or This Is War?

If you like your romance sizzling, sexy, and full of banter then Checkmate: This Is War might be the book for you. I really enjoyed this story and couldn’t get enough of Viola and Travis. The banter and sexual tension was refreshing since readers could really feel it was only a matter of time till these two finally got it on. I love Viola’s character so much but her justification for holding the hatred for Travis was a bit childish on her part but it worked for the story line. As for that ending, I can’t wait to find out what happens next with Travis and Viola.

You know what... I can't believe I just took out an hour of my busy college life to sit down and finish this book. Unbelievable.

Scenes after scenes after scenes of the Hero getting his dick sucked by OW, tedious name-calling between the Hero and heroine, and I was screaming inside.

And the heroine... sweetheart. Please. Love yourself.

Viola has known Travis since he became her older brother's best buddy when she was 10.
Now, twelve years later he's the most sexy man she's ever seen...

description

But she hates him. Loathes him. He's a (horribly sexy) manwhore!
And she has to see him and his one-night stands/affairs/victims all the time at the place he shares with her brother.
And now she's staying at her brother's place for those two weeks of spring break! All alone with Travis because dear brother is visiting his girlfriend!!!

GAME ON!!

Let's hope that at least one of them will come out of those two weeks alive! ☺☺☺

What will happen to Viola & Travis?
Will there be a HEA?
Will there be a horrible Cliffy?

description

I'm not telling you that of course ☺

description

OK, I might tell you we have one of those horrible Cliffys, BUT book #2 will be with us soon!

LOL!

Viola and Travis are so over-the-top with each other.
They're constantly fighting. They can't have a normal conversation.
It's the grown-up equivalent of hairpulling in the kindergarten sandbox. As we grown-ups call it: foreplay!
We all know that they're horribly attracted to each other but they're just too stubborn to do something with that.

They used to be best friends and somewhere on the way it all got lost - and poor Travis has no idea how? So he just plays along with Viola's hatred.

It's really adorable to watch them - or rather it's painful, because we just want them to finally get their HEA with each other.
But of course that would be too easy! And nothing is easy between those two!

We have lots of really funny and sexy and frustrating moments until they will get their happy end - but it'll take them a while - a long while.

Poor Travis - he doesn't seem to be happy in his life. He has this pretty good marketing job where he wants to work his way up. But he hates it too. He hates wearing a suit all day. Then why did he choose this kind of job? He would be better as a bar owner. That's kind of how I imagine him - this sexy, tattoed manwhore. ☺ And also, why in the world did he think it was a good idea to start something with the crazy daughter of his boss? Jeez! Lots of drama to come there too! ☺

And Viola. Why didn't she talk to Travis back then when she started hating him? Doesn't she know that guys just don't get things the way girls do?? Ugh - a lot of drama could've been prevented by talking! BUT - we need drama in our books - it would be hella boring otherwise. ☺

I really enjoyed this book!!!

And now I can't wait to see what will happen in the 2nd book!
GIMMEEEEEEE!!!!!

UPDATE:

Just finished listening to the audiobook version of this book and holy moly, it just keeps getting better and better! I still wanted to slap Alyssa ten ways to Sunday and wring her neck, throat punch Travis on more than one occasion and just give Viola tons of bear hugs. Lia Langola, the narrator for the book, did such an incredible job. I loved listening to this! ❤️

______________________________________________________

OH MOTHERTRUCKER!!! That was one mean and crazy cliffhanger! I want to rip my hair out right about now and fast forward time to get the second book in this duet already! I wasn't expecting to get so hooked on this book as much as I did but holy crap, I couldn't get enough of it. It was INSANELY GOOD! I kept on flipping the pages, getting more and more drawn and sucked into the intense game Travis King and Viola Fisher has been playing. They made me lose my mind over all those times they circled one another like caged animals! And once the King pounced, all bets were off. You'll be feeling that fire deep in your belly and just pray they both get out of it alive.

I loved those very few peeks in between when Travis showed what he was hiding beneath that hard up and extreme manwhoring exterior. I loved his passion and his angst, but Christ did I want to wring his neck and knock his head off most of the time too! It's funny because you'll think it'd be so annoying with how Travis was the whole time, but no, I found it so enthralling all throughout instead. I also enjoyed Viola's personality. I liked how she handled everything with Travis regardless if she had to do some immature moves to get to him. It was frustrating as hell and she made me feel all the hurt under that good girl persona she has. When she cracked, I didn't blame her at all. They both saw it coming and it was honestly just a matter of time.

The tension between these two characters is crackling beyond reason and will seriously leave you all hot and bothered. Their bickering was never ending and those emotions simmering beneath were so strong it'll touch you on every turn of the page.

The phrase, “there's a fine line between love and hate”, circled through my head the entire time reading this book. It had me at the edge of my seat and grasping my ebook reader from start to finish. I'm so happy and honored that I was given the chance to read this for Kennedy Fox. This pair of authors is a hurricane you won't see coming and you'll have to hold on tight if you want to live through their wrath. KENNEDY FOX, WHO ARE YOU LADIES??? You're got me so pumped up, I NEED MORE!

Book Review - Checkmate - This is War by Kennedy Fox - 2 A is for Asshole Stars

I tried to love this book, I really did and despite it not grabbing me at the beginning I persevered until the end. This involved me putting down and picking this book up many times over the course of a week. Sadly, this didn’t alter my overriding feelings about this book. I’ll break them down below:

Travis is an asshole. Like seriously. He treats every woman like dirt and I didn’t see any reason why they were dropping like flies around him.

Viola and Travis fight but there is nothing playful about it. They’re just nasty and then they are all over each other. There was no build up to the sex scenes, nothing evocative at all and so they left me cold.

We get some back story between Viola and Travis (a small memory at the beginning, but there is a lot of telling (instead of showing) around some of these snippets which strips the emotion out of them. I wanted regular flashbacks to sweet Travis from Viola which would come in when his facade slipped and she saw a glimmer of the boy he used to be, so that I could see why she would want him.Or from Travis, as he longs for her, flashing back to days of lingering looks etc.

Travis is a disrespectful douche to everyone - he has no boundaries at work and thinks he’s god's gift there as well, and that he doesn’t have to follow the rules of everyone else. Again, I’m asking myself why anyone would like this ass?

Despite flirting with Viola and the thought that this might actually go somewhere, he’s still getting it on elsewhere. I mean if you like someone and have liked them a while, and were resisting the urge, you might scratch the itch. But when you’re considering going for it, or have already started playing with someone, you leave the others alone. The fact he brought people back to the same house as her was downright nasty and proof that he wasn’t worth shit. Any feelings would have been well and truly killed by someone doing that to you. But no Viola really does stoop to some new lows and I lost any time shred of respect I had for her. She deserved everything she got from him, which could easily be the clap/gonorrhea/hiv.

I just cannot love a book where women are treated like objects just around to serve men and I think here is my main issue. There was a complete disrespect towards women here. I couldn’t tell you what Viola did with her days because it wasn’t deemed important enough to the story - whereas Travis sat behind his desk being a wonderboy doing anything and everything dropped on him and finding time to fit in the ladies either during or afterwards.

I’m afraid it’s a big miss from me, which is a damn shame because the cover is beautiful but it’s the only thing about this book that I think is.

I love enemies to friends stories. After all it was Jane Austen who said:

"Is not general incivility the very essence of love?"

When written well, these kinds of stories cannot be beaten. Even though these storylines are my faves, they are often the hardest books for me to like. I really liked this story by KF and I loved the secondary plot about Travis' job. What I didn't care for was the constant back and forth jabbing...but I can't complain because the title clearly says it all: This is War! But for me it was too much sometimes that it came off a bit childish...especially when the hero was always trying to one up all the time.

I do feel like this is a pretty enjoyable book and I actually liked it way more than I thought I would. I can't find much wrong with it. The only thing I can say is that maybe I'm just growing up and I want more mature stories. I want my enemies to lovers storylines to rival that of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

There is a major cliffhanger and I do want to know what happens next so I'll definitely be continuing on this journey with Travis and Viola. If you like Enemies to lovers and you want a fun, sexy read then I definitely recommend this for you:)

Spicy Level 🌶️🌶️.5/5

Fate's a bitch!

You know like when you get a cavity in your tooth, and you keep eating sweets because you can't stop. And you know it's so bad for you and you need to see a dentist to fix it...BUT STILL, YOU EAT SWEETS MAKING IT WORSE BECAUSE IT'S PAINFUL WHEN YOU EAT THEM AND YOUR TONGUE WON'T LEAVE IT ALONE and you regret your poor life choices but YOU STILL EAT SWEETS...

This book is like that...It's bad for you in every way but like the unnecessary drama and tension...I just couldn't stop reading... I EVEN bought the next book in the series...and I am so confused why because it just doesn't make sense...but that crappy cliffhanger! I need to know MORE and NAOW!

Girl (Viola) is in love with her brother's manwhore best friend and roommate (Travis) who is obsessed with sex. Girl is angry that manwhore broke her heart when she was a teen so very vocally tells manwhore how much she despises him (BUT STILL IS SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO MANWHORE). Girl does not want to see her parental units over spring break and decides to stay in her brother's room while he's getting sexy with his girlfriend out of state...but it means living with manwhore...and these two start to torment each other leading to various instances of lack of clothing.

If you haven't caught it by now Travis is a manwhore and I don't think he can go more than 12 hours without sticking his dick into someone's mouth or... And it's like a different girl every time. The amount of sloppy seconds Viola deals with...I mean they get it on WHEN HE SMELLS LIKE ANOTHER WOMAN...and she just lets him... like ew.... This man can not commit and Viola deserves better than him because she lets him walk all over her. BECAUSE, why wouldn't she when he happens to call her baby and gives her a pretty hand necklace...

The SMUT WAS ALSO SLOW BURN between the main characters because all the beginning smut is just manwhore with someone else...

I dunno why I enjoyed this but I did.... My rating is me being petty because quality is like 1 but the enjoyment was 3.5...

So now...Imma go torture my tooth (AKA my BRAIN) and eat some candy (AKA read book 2) because this is addicting in the worst way possible...

Trope Summary:
▶ College/University Romance
▶ Enemies to Lovers
▶ Roommates to Lovers
▶ Childhood Friends to Lovers
▶ Brother's Best Friend
▶ Hand Necklaces
▶ Hate Sex

4.5 Hate-the-cliffy-but-I'll-read-the-sequel-soon-so-it's-okay stars

Holy guacamole, wasn't this book hot!!! Wow, I was in dire need of a fan during certain scenes.

In two words this books was sexy and entertaining.

The banter between the two character was priceless and I loved how the whole story revolved around them, with a bare minimum of side characters. 70% of the book is set in their apartment and still the story didn't come out lacking.

This is War is the epitome of hate-to-love. Childhood friends that, thanks to a misunderstanding, end up hating each other but it's still clear they have feelings for each other. I love this trope but I'm wary of it because at times the hate is not fun-hate or banter-filled-hate which is nothing but veiled-attraction. Instead here it was exactly that.

On the down side, I have to warn all of you that the H, Travis, is no saint. Even though it's blatant he's protective towards Viola and he's partial to her, until admitting in the end to having feelings for her, he still rolls in the hay with OW once after the he and the h have started fooling around, not going all the way, but still. I know this can be a trigger for some readers, so I thought of throwing it out there.

Anyway, even in his assholes ways, I enjoyed Travis as a character. He's sarcastic, cocky, intelligent and one hell of a dirty talker. He's probably the king of dirty talkers, hence why this book was so insanely hot. The sex scenes were off the charts steamy and I thought the physical and emotional parts were very well balanced, even if the physical was a tad preponderant. Which I deemed okay also hoping to get more into the emotional aspect in the next installment of the duet.

Viola was also a great character. I loved that even if she was kind of a nerd, she was still portrayed as a confident young woman who knows what she wants and who stands her ground. She and Travis are well-paired and both so strong-willed that sparks fly every time they are together.

In the end, I would definitely recommend it. It's not overly long, it's fun and steamy. Also, the cliffhanger was completely unexpected and will have you craving for more. Now I can't wait to read the next one.

OH MY FREAKING CLIFFY!!!! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ASAP!

I was reluctant whether to read it now, even though, I knew that there was a cliffhanger BUT I was too impatien, plus my bestie loved it soooo yeah, I did not stand a chance there.. LOL . So here I am, finished a new book, from a new author, new characters - with whom I fell in love with - and an upcoming book for which I want to scream because I WANT IT so bad!

One of the best friends-to-enemies-to-lovers story. I am not a big fan of those but this one won me because the story was so good written, so funny and endearing. They met when there we young, that first love when you feeling nothing but butterflies in your tummy. Then, some poor choices break your heart and you are left there, thinking that love only can cause pain and make you believe that there is no Prince Charming .. been there, done that.

Viola was one of the best heroines because everyone could relate to her a little or more, in my cause she was like my twin sister. Even our names are slightly the same - super fangirl-ing over here . So, she was smart, funny, sweet and even hot. She was a girl who is not ashamed of the fact that she loves studying and reading, which in my personal opinion, no one should ever feel ashamed of. She was independed but deep down wanted someone who will make her feel special. She saw that someone in our cocky hero - Travis , but with time things have changed and they become to be like cat and mouse, ready to chew their heads off everytime they see each other.

Travis KINGGGG , was the King of the manwhores, I mean really! Although, he never understood why his friend started to hate his so much when they were kids, he was having a good time riling up Viola every chance he got. But despite always mocking her, he was still fascinated by her. He wanted to protect her from him and the fact that she is his best friend's little sister did not help either.. but underneath their hating game was always their chemistry.

The fact that they are practically forced to live under the same roof for two weeks tested their limits and there is no turning back after that. What they have between each other is inevitable to explode. Let me just tell you that this book will make you feel it in alll the right places, you know what I mean ;)
I loved the humour and the banters between the characters. The story is faced paced and really intriguing. Of course the ending will leave your mouth hanging open, but thankfully we won't wait for too long for their Happily ever after .

Viola & Travis are mortal verbal enemies. They grew up together across the street from each other since late adolescences. Viola is the nerdy book kid loving school & family. Travis is the cocky jock keeping himself at arms lengths from everyone. Voila spews hateful insults in Travis' direction every chance she gets because of his womanizing ways. The hate is just a cover for hurt that was felt from over hearing Travis say something to her brother on her thirteenth birthday. Travis' womanizing is his way of never allowing anyone to get close to him. He enjoys a woman's company but sleepovers are strictly forbidden. When Viola & Travis are left alone together for two weeks, it's unclear if they'll both live through it. They begin to play a take no prisoners game to out whit each other. As the game becomes more dramatic the attraction to each other becomes harder to deny. When they finally cross lines neither of them can ignore, the truth about where the hurt & hate comes from finally is shared. When it seems as though they are going to move forward in positive direction together, Travis is in an accident that brings a whole new set of questions.

This was an enjoyable read with a lot of angst & sass. The writing was good & the characters were fun. The story is intended for mature readers -- there is a bunch of naughty sex happening. I would recommend this book if you like the genre.
