Checkmate duet series #5

This is Dangerous: Logan & Kayla, #1

Rate this book
Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor.
A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts.

Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable—or so he says.

He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.

I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way—messy past and all.

He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.

Checkmate, Knight.

This is book 1 in the Logan & Kayla duet and must be read first. Suggested for mature readers only.

➳A knight in shining armor. A damsel in distress. That is what Kennedy Fox brings to the table in this malevolent love story that will have you questioning everything else the these duo authors have to write in the future…

➳Logan Knight, a detective and single father who finds the struggle of letting his guard down and avoids anything that is in the category of “commitment” after what happened with his former partner, who also gave him the most precious gift of all, his daughter. Though he is an individual with a rugged attitude, delicious and strong arms, a body of Adonis, and a heart filled with love and compassion towards the ones that get a chance to admire his world and perspective, Logan is also someone who as we learn throughout this first part of the duet book series, has a struggle on acquiring the emotions that revolve around him and inside his mind when it comes down to Kayla and her compassion towards absolutely anything and everything.

➳Kayla, a woman filled with love and care towards the wonders of the world. An obsession with donuts, more specifically, the pink frosting with sprinkles kind. Her past history is the type of person that has made her into someone who is bursting put so much affection and tenderness. As someone who has been from one foster home to the other, to coming back, to being rejected by different families, Kayla has grown up to be someone who is the opposite to the world she was absorbed in. Her passion towards dogs, and especially dogs in need, is one of the many aspects of her that I adore more than anything. My admiration towards her morals are beyond the roof, even though we get a tiny glimpse of something that has me questioning her actions and what else she does not share with Logan.

➳Logan and Kayla have a chemistry that can be describe as one that chokes you up and consumes you with hated and love at the same time. Though Logan is the one that tends to always reject Kayla’s affections and approaches towards him, at the end of the day, there is no way he can deny the passion that is present and thick as a five layer wedding cake. Once they encounter that they cannot deny each other any longer, it becomes something that I as the reader enjoyed much more than any other book in this checkmate series. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the previous couples. However, Logan and Kayla have something beyond different that I found rather unique coming from Kennedy Fox. The intimate scenes where hot, smocking, and filled with lots of care and passion. Especially all those scenarios that have you craving for more shower scenes, kitchen make out scenes, watching movies with the dogs scenes, walking the dogs scenes, and much more!

➳Overall, this was first part of the series is one that you CANNOT miss reading, The ending itself, TO DIE FOR! The second part comes out on my birthday and I honestly cannot wait to find out what happens to Kayla and how Logan can coup with what happens (no spoilers, shhhh). If you have not read the previous books in the checkmate series, that is no problem at all (if you don’t mind spoilers from the previous couples) since you can still enjoy this duet series eve so. Thank you to the wonderful duo authors known as Kennedy Fox for giving me the opportunity to read this first part of a marvelous book to come, and also a huge gratitude for making me a part of their InstaFam. I cannot wait for the future and what else comes their way!

**2 STARS**

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT

It wasn't a bad book by any means but it was a bit cliche. I was kind of bored reading it but not annoyed so I felt like it deserved at least 2 STARS. There wasn't anything special about it.

I will say that I thought that Kayla's character was too much of a goody, goody. I mean the girl was basically a saint. From volunteering at homeless and dog shelters, the girl could do no wrong. It made her character unrealistic for me.

I didn't find anything special about Logan. He was sexy (of course that's a given for all romance books), a cop/detective, and an army vet. Other than that, he was just like any other guy walking around. I never connected with his character. Besides him standing around and being eye candy there was no other purpose I could use him for in my life.

There was no real plot just a bit of unrequited love from Kayla's side. Because it's a romance book I never worried whether or not Logan and Kayla get together so I never felt any angst. There are loads and sweet moments between the two of them but it lacked any passion. Kayla came off very insecure to me and I hated the way she hung on Logan's every word like a sad little puppy dog. I hate when females wait around for guys to make up their minds. I just wanted to scream, "Girl, STOP! Let it go! Move on! He doesn't want you! Don't wait around for him to realize you are worthy!"

Shit like that pisses me off in real life too. I mean I can understand waiting around for a little bit but over a year. . .girl, no! Just no!

As far as the cliffhanger - I didn't feel anything while reading the book so I didn't care.

Sometimes when I go back and read my reviews I realize that I can come off like an evil bitch but I'm not. Half the time when I'm writing, I'm being sarcastic. I write like I speak and that's a bit sassy. I mean no harm.

Logan Knight is a true Knight in shining armor, but of course with a pair of handcuffs. His character is by far one of the most swoon worthy gentleman of the Romance world. He was sweet and cared about Kayla's needs, and then he had that vulnerable side that makes you want to hold him all night long to make him feel better. I loved how friendly he was with Kayla, even when he was trying to push her away from wanting a romantic relationship. Their chemistry just wasn't something he could deny and the sexual tension between them had my Kindle smoking.

Kayla was just a genuinely nice character and I honestly wish she was a real person so I could be her friend. She had that type of personality that made me smile the whole time I was reading this book, and I loved it. She never let the fact that Logan was pushing her away get her down and it was actually a breath of fresh air. There was no moping around because she couldn't get the guy she wanted, and even when she was a little sad about it she didn't get completely dejected.

Overall, this is not a writing duo that you want to miss. Each of the duets can be read alone but I highly recommend reading them all because these stories are so great. Beware of these cliffy's though because they are killer! I'm already ready to pull out my hair in anticipation of what's to come for Logan and Kayla.

Buddy read with Cait!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME, KENNEDY FOX?!?! WHAT IS THIS CLIFFHANGER!!!!

Honestly this series is so addictive, I love it! Kayla and Logan are just as lovable as Drew and Courtney, but I'm not yet sure who I love more. For now, it's still Drew and Courtney.

Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes, and Kayla and Logan's story is exactly that, so I was super pumped. There's so much depth to each of the MCs and SO much happened in this book. I don't even know how Kennedy Fox will fix all of it in the second book and give us the happy ending! I mean, after that damn cliffhanger????? EVIL, KENNEDY FOX, EVIL.

Now I have to wait for the last book and I'm not ready to say goodbye to all those characters.

I was so excited to read my first book by Kennedy Fox. And, Wow! I really enjoyed it! This Is Dangerous was so much more than I expected.

Here's the breakdown: Logan and Kayla have been orbiting around each other since they share mutual friends. Kayla makes it known that she's interested, but Logan continues to keep her at arms length. Well, you can only get thrown together so much before sparks fly, right?

What I really enjoyed: The book was completely unexpected. I have a knack for going in blind, but I was totally blind on this one and set my expectations based on the sexy cover. The book was so much more than though. I love surprise gems like this one.
The characters have so much depth. They're expertly fleshed out and so genuine. I liked them both immediately. They're both professions and business minded adults. Logan and Kayla each have very distinct personalities and life experiences. We learn a bit more about them after each chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed the exposed secrets and intimate details the reveal and learn about one another. Sure they have some minor faults, but it only added to their charm.
The storyline is detailed and intricate. The shared history and friendships makes their friendship easy, but the romance was a bit of a slow burn. Although I thought they'd connect sooner, the story arc is solid. I enjoyed the secondary characters and light humor interspersed throughout. But mostly the emotional aspect of the story kept me captivated.
The ending. I won't ruin it with spoilers, but leave you with this instead:

Overall, this is a very good read. I'm so excited I decided to dive into this series. It was just what I needed and I can't wait for more! For others who are wondering if it's necessary to read the other duets prior to diving into this one, the answer is no. However, I do plan to go back and read the other couple's stories.

Logan & Kayla.
We all remember them from the last books, and now it's time for their own HEA!
But it's not as easy as it could/should be.
The main reason why Logan doesn't want to start anything with Kayla is ... his daughter Skylar.
She's his everything! And her mom makes his live ... hell. She constantly needs more money, doesn't allow him enough time with Skylar, bad-mouths him to the girl and the other mothers in dance class. She's horrible. Logan wants nothing more than for Skylar and Maggie to move to Sacramento, so that he can spend more time with his daughter. But Maggie is a real b*tch about things.
And right in the middle of all that he's so horribly attracted to Kayla, but he doesn't want to drag her into his complicated life.
But maybe Kayla wants to be dragged???
She wants nothing more than to belong somewhere. To someone. She went from foster home to foster home until she was 18. She finally wants a real family!

What will happen to Kayla & Logan?
Will there be a HEA?
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT!!!! ☺

OK - there might be a tiny little - HUGE - cliffy - but book #2 will be out in September!

Finally back in Sacramento with our darlings...
We finally find out what Logan's life is like. And it's horrible. That stupid ex of his. Grrrr. I wanted to hit her over the head with my kindle!!!! But I still have hope that she'll be magically nicer by the end of the book!
Logan's such an adorable dad to Skylar. Soooo cute. But Maggie is doing everything she can to work against him.
And poor Kayla. She's never been this drawn to a guy. But it's all so complicated.
And Skylar is not Logan's only problem - he still has nightmares from his time in the military. He really doesn't want Kayla dragged into his sh*t. She deserves so much better.
And Kayla might also have a secret or two ....
It's all so very cute and funny but also very serious and frustrating. And we also have some suspensy and very exciting moments too!!! And lots of dogs! ☺☺☺
And that END! OY!

#CHECKMATE: This is DANGEROUS was a really great first book in the Kayla & Logan lovestory! Exciting, adorable, sexy, frustrating, sad, moving, mysterious, suspensy, scary! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Logan - this one is MINE!!!☺

... were there some things I didn't like? Hm not really. Just sometimes the writing is not really my thing. But that's my problem. I can't really explain it. Some expressions or words just seem wrong to me. Wrong words in the wrong place. No idea. I'm weird! I've noticed that in all the previous Kennedy Fox books I've read. It's just their kind of style. But it's not one I looove.

4.5 "She's addicted to the D" stars!
[Take your mind off the gutter. I meant DONUTS and DOGS. Not the other D, you dirty little thang. Okay, fine. Maybe a little bit of all the above. ;)]

Oh my god, I think that cliffhanger officially broke my brain and drove me past the point of insanity because right when I reached that last page, when I read those last few words... I just couldn't, for the life of me, stop laughing. Maybe it was my way of coping, knowing we won't be getting the other half of Logan and Kayla's story until September, but I seriously found myself in a massive face palm moment, laughing and shaking my head repeatedly. Hoo boy, it's definitely going to be a freaking long two months of waiting!

When we met Logan Knight in the previous Checkmate duet, he was so broody and quiet and mysterious that there's not a chance you wouldn't be intrigued by him. I desperately wanted to unearth every secret, every story this man has and when I started reading this? Oh man, it was nothing short of a hook, line and sinker. Logan Knight had reeled me in and I was a complete goner. He really is a knight in shining armor in all ways, even though he doesn't think so. Yes, he's a freaking hot alpha male. A man who'll singe your panties inside out once he talks dirty to you. But when you get to know him, when you get past those walls he's built all those years ago, you'll find a charming, sweet and very protective man with a huge heart filled with love. A heart waiting to find its perfect match to share all that love and longing with. A true badass, yet a big softie deep inside. *sigh* Such a perfect man.

And then there's little miss Kayla Sinclair who has the biggest, most golden heart ever. I want to be her best friend. I couldn't count the times this woman had me sighing, melting all over, and just wanting to be as wonderful and generous and beautiful inside and out as her. She's a heroine whom you wouldn't have a hard time falling in love with at all. Aside from having the kindest soul and the sweetest heart, her love for sprinkled and cream-filled donuts and rescue pups will most likely do you in. Seriously, I freaking LOVED that she named her dogs after Disney princes! Ugh, and don't even get me started with what she did with Herman. It has me dying all over again. Needless to say, Logan indeed gave her the most appropriate pet name ever—Angel. Because she truly is one.

I loved the relationship Logan and Kayla are in and the friendship they built. Theirs is certainly a way slower burn compared to the #TeamTraviola and #TeamDrewtney's, that's for sure. But the push and pull in that sexual tension between them will have you so amped up. At one point, with all the teasing KF was giving us, all I wanted to do was scream "get it on already!" But then the pacing worked out with the kind of premise #TeamLayla's story has. You'll definitely feel that insane attraction and feels so much more. You'll get to devour and absorb more of how they felt for one another.

Kennedy Fox slays hearts... AGAIN. I guess that's not much of a big shocker at this point, really. This author duo has yet to disappoint me. Every character they introduce, every tale they write just captivates me right from the very first page and have you begging for more even after you've read the last page. And This is Dangerous is no different at all. They won't only have your heart soaring through the skies or your panties drenched, they'll make you see things in such a fun and different light too, which I really enjoy.

They're the ones who had me not minding cliffhangers as much, no matter how brutal they are. Case in point? The kind of cliffy This is Dangerous has. And the thing that I love most about their work? Their books actually vary in their own twists and turns. How they don't follow the same pattern all the time—aside from the cliffhangers—when it comes to the plot. Each story has its own uniqueness, its own flavor, that you'll never know what to expect or what's going to happen next. I think the last five chapters of this book had me on edge more than the first two of the Checkmate duets because I kept on waiting for the other shoe to drop. And when it came? Oh holy hell, drop it did.

Are you freaking kidding me!?! That was so MEAN! But I expect nothing less from a Kennedy Fox ending. Review to come.

Kayla and Logan are briefly introduced in the previous Checkmate books, but This is Dangerous is the beginning of their love story. This was a perfect example of why friends to lovers is one of my favorite book tropes. Logan and Kayla have amazing chemistry from the beginning. Kayla has never been shy about her more than friendly feelings for Logan, and while Logan may share the same feelings, he has his own reasons for not taking their relationship to the next level. At the end of the previous book, we only had speculations as to why Logan keeps Kayla at bay, but we're thankfully not left waiting for long and learn nearly straight away his reasonings.

There's a lot of back and forth - "are they gonna finally give in this time?" "Gahh nooo!" "What the hell Logan!?" "Ahhhh. (sigh)". Yes, that's basically how this book went. I'm a huge sucker for angst, the more the better, and loved the constant catch and release between these two. This book was fun and sexy with a little bit of added mystery to keep things interesting. I loved that the both of them are genuinely like the sweetest people alive and yet know how to get down and dirty! Boy can they bring the steam!

And I can't not talk about that ending.... My goodness, do these ladies know how to do cliffhangers or what?! I'm all for a well done cliffy that keeps me begging for more. This was their worst/best one yet and I cannot wait to get my hands on This is Beautiful to see how this plays out. I know these ladies will make it worth the wait.

Besides the very first book of the Checkmate series, This is War, this book is my favorite of the bunch! Kayla and Logan's story NEEDS to be read. So do yourself a solid and grab a copy for yourself. And then run to your nearest donut shop and eat the sprinkliest donut they have ;)

4 He's All I've Ever Wanted Stars!

 photo 4F09F7B1-DAE7-4A5D-9F77-8FF8D994E8DE_zpsyjblpus3.jpg

Kayla Sinclair is a 26 yr. old woman who grew up in foster care, and lives in Sacramento, California where she works as an interior designer. She's never had lasting connections with anyone but pets or friends. Her friends are her chosen family & her fur babies are her life. Rescuing animals is her passion, & she volunteers at the animal shelter often. The only thing missing in her life is that special someone. She goes on one horrible date after another, but what she really wants is the man she can't have, Logan Knight.

Kayla & Logan met through mutual friends Drew & Courtney. She made it clear she's interested, but Logan continues to resist her advances. He's brooding, mysterious, and unavailable. He's constantly full of excuses as to why he can't date right now. He's guarded & secretive, but Kayla is determined to show him what he's missing.

 photo 4B41CBB1-1600-4630-9875-EFB9D8E391BC_zpscxspjcvd.jpg

Logan Knight is a former soldier with a complicated past. He's a detective with the Sacramento PD who avoids people & stays isolated. He doesn't let anyone get too close to him, and that includes Kayla. He thinks he's protecting her from him & his problems by not getting involved with her. She deserves someone without baggage or complications. She's such a good person & he can't allow himself to have a relationship right now. His past is too messy & the timing is all wrong. He tries to focus on his career & keep Kayla on a friendship level.

When a situation puts their lives in danger Kayla & Logan grow closer. He doesn't want to cross that line with Kayla, but it's getting more difficult to hide how badly he wants her. Kayla notices the way he looks at her, especially anytime she's around another guy. She wants him to realize she can handle anything & is patient with him. When Logan asks Kayla to help him with something personal she slowly breaks down the walls he's carefully built up.

 photo 7602B1A5-57E0-4367-A344-4DD8039DFDAF_zpszcijyvpm.jpg

-The greed, heat, and passion between us is undeniable, but it's also dangerous.

-Falling in love with Kayla Sinclair would be reckless. Allowing her to fall for me would be dangerous.

-I know he's fighting his feelings for me. I can see it in the way he looks at me, the way he touches me, the way he tenses anytime our bodies are close.

-"I've been fighting this for way too goddamn long."

-No one has ever looked at me the way he does, like I'm everything.

 photo F36F6B52-A3B4-4099-9C58-1D2889341395_zpsqdf3xcq6.jpg

Soon Kayla & Logan can't deny their feelings any longer. We get a lot of sexual tension & angst as this couple builds up to finally giving in to admitting there's something real between them. Holy hell it's hot when these two get together & I loved all the donut talk! ;))

Buddy read with Jia!

THAT. FUCKING. CLIFFHANGER!!!!!

I have once again finished one of these books in 4 hours. I regret nothing.

How am I meant to wait another few months til the next book? How am I meant to cope with that ending? How am I meant to cope without these characters for the next few months?

This book was SPECTACULAR! Kayla and Logan have officially become my favourite couple in the Checkmate series. I love them so much and their story is just so addicting. I absolutely cannot wait for what is in store in the next book. HOW WILL EVERYTHING BE WRAPPED UP?! These cliffhangers will be the death of me I swear!

These books are my addiction. I can't stop reading them. I adore all three couples and I just need MORE!

Can we all please appreciate that there was an ACOTAR reference in the book?!

I’ll only judge you if it’s something ridiculous like being Team Feylin or something.”

His cheeks nearly touch his ears by the loud laughter that roars from his throat. “Well for the record, I’d be Team Feysand.”

I laugh, appreciating that he knew what I was talking about. “Don’t know whether I’m concerned or impressed that you know the ACOTAR series.” I’m not a self-proclaimed fangirl, but I will elbow my way through a bookstore on release day to get the next book.

Kennedy Fox gives us another OUTSTANDING introduction in their brand new Checkmate Duet, featuring the highly anticipated story of Kayla and Logan. If you haven't heard of Kennedy Fox, all I have to say is WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN? You absolutely NEED to get in on this phenomenon! The characters are incredibly AMAZING! The storylines are insanely ENTERTAINING! The writing is absolutely ADDICTING! To keep this series going with a third saga, and in the meantime, keeping their readers interested, involved, and enamored, is just an incredible accomplishment.

Not only will they completely SWEEP you off of your feet with the amazing connection between Kayla and Logan...Kennedy Fox will keep you on your toes with the action, adventure, and entertainment factor of this first book. Don't forget this is a duet, so there WILL be a cliffhanger, but the wait that this dynamic duo puts us through, is so damn delicious! I knew the cliffhanger would be EPIC, but I had NO IDEA it was going to go the way it went. With impeccable and seamless writing that these two authors produce, I can't imagine you not becoming immediately ADDICTED to their brand of second chance romance.

"Please don't. Don't kiss me if you just plan to leave again."

"Angel, I plan to do a lot more than kiss you this time. You okay with that?"

Talk about swoon city! Logan Knight is absolutely DELICIOUS! Don't get me wrong, he will frustrate the ever-living HELL out of you, but in the end, he is just an all-around GOOD guy. He's one of the good ones and Kayla noticed that from the very start. This is why she is so persistent with him and the future that they could have. I love the fight that Kayla has in her. She is so strong and yet so vulnerable when it comes down to Logan. She is determined, loyal, and sassy...Logan's perfect match. Logan just has to let down his guard and trust that he can be what Kayla needs, that he won't break her, that he won't bring her down when his past comes to haunt him everyday.

"Fucking Christ, Kayla. I've been fighting this for way too goddamn long."

"About time you came to your senses."

The struggle is real and heartbreaking, but the journey to their happily ever after has just begun. I'm so exciting to get to their conclusion. I need their HEA to be EPIC and I know Kennedy Fox will do them justice, and give their readers EXACTLY what they want. I'm not worried at all, but I will be waiting on the edge of my seat for what's to come. Put your trust into Kennedy Fox. They will not disappoint you. They will feed your addiction, of that I'm completely sure of.

I thought I was Team Drewtney until Logan Knight happened! Whoop! I was swept off my feet with this brooding yet sexy and hot man with a big heart and equally big cock! Yup, he's every woman's wet dream indeed but sadly though, the man is not ready for commitment. Said he's gonna wait for me until I'm ready! Oh yes, bitches I call dibs on him. I needed my Knight in Shining armor too!!! Kidding!!! But really, Why he isn't ready yet, only him knew why. Said " The timing isn't right. I'm really focused on my career right now. I don't have time to date." (*shrugs) His words. But then Kayla Sinclair happened too, and who could resist a woman with amazing beauty inside and out? Charming, compassionate and with a big heart. ahh this woman manages to made me laugh so hard and fall in love with her at the same time. Together, their chemistry is so intense and explosive. I love them both to pieces, imperfections included.

Gahd, I was teased and was on the edge with their sexual tension due to the slow burn romance portrayed in this book. As it progressed, I could not put it down. The friends to lovers romance depicted was one I love about it plus the way it was uniquely portrayed and delivered. Surprising events here and there and twists and turns that left me in awe becaue I never saw it coming. It added an edge, depth and substance to the story. The suspense-ish too made my mind nuts for having a lot of questions I needed an answer. It's a quick read though yet easy to get with. Once you started reading it, everything just flowed flawlessly until you are lost into the story hooked into it because it's that enjoyable to read. Character wise it was great. I love them both. I love the broken parts of them and I needed them to move on forward because clearly their just the perfect fit. I don't mind the push and pull of Logan, I didn't even mind how Kayla's into him despite Logan's constant hot and cold affection. I just get them, that's why I was rooting for them. And I was so glad I did, because when they finally made it work, it was INTENSE! The hot scenes were definitely HOT. I could not look at showers, kitchen, dogs, and movies anymore without remembering them. I fell in love big time!

But then the cliffy!!!! Gahd! I know this is a duet but that was one cliffy I never saw coming from Kennedy Fox. It was just different from the previous duets and I've got plenty of questions in my mind I needed answers. From smiling so wide coupled with that hot and bothered feeling and heart thumping because...love! I'm in love together with them, and then suddenly a twist and turn I never expected! Really, I needed that next book ASAP!!!

Overall, I will recommend this book. It was enjoyable to read and I really had fun. I love that it was written unlike the first two duets. Fast paced an easy read but with angst just enough to keep you in the edge. I devoured it. Clearly, Kayla and Logan's journey captured my heart.

4 "As much as I hate to admit it, I'm drawn to him like sprinkles on donuts." STARS

It's release day for this bad boy and I couldn't be happier to share my thoughts about it with y'all.

This book is the first half of Kayla and Logan's story. It's gonna be hard to not spoiler anything because there were some major plot twists from the very beginning, first of all, who Skylar really is... dun-dun-duuun. I'm sure you're dying to know.

Anyway, while you stew in your theories and hypothesis, what I can tell you is that I loved both characters. You cannot not like Kayla because she's such a genuine and kind person, although her kinky side won't allow the label of Mary Sue. I loved seeing her with her fur babies and how deeply she cared not just about them but about all animals. To the point that she will almost risk her life to save one. Her back story was indeed sad and there's a part of it we're still not privy of, secrets she's still keeping from everyone. I have a feeling all of this will play a major role in the second book, even though I kind of already have an idea about the whole matter.

"That's why I like you so much. You don't allow my insecurities to take over. You welcome and dismiss them. Thank you for caring about me. I can't say too many people have."

I highly appreciated how much more of a romantic suspense this one was compared to its predecessors. Sure, Mia effing Mongomery had been a great nemesis, but I was excited to see new threats at the horizon.

As for Logan, beside the earthquake caused by his relation to Skylar, he's exactly the same man we've met in the previous instalment. Quiet, stern almost, but loyal and fearless. In this book, he reveals himself as a true Knight in Shining Armor.

"I wish you could see what I see." She places the palm of her hand against my chest, my heart beating rapidly. "You have a kind heart. you're a protector. You're always here when I need you. Whether or not you see it, you're a good soul, Logan Knight."

Also, Logan's thoughtful gifts and easy banter were a surprise. I'd been a bit scared he wouldn't be tridimentional enough as a character, being too strict, too cop-like even in his personal life, and instead what I found was a very caring and lovable man who's not afraid to show his girlfriend how much he cares about her.

He's hoarding secrets like a double layer of Spanx and there's barely enough wiggle room to breathe, but that doesn't mean I'm not up for the challenge.

That being said, their relationship as a whole wasn't as epic as Traviola or Drewtney. Sure, he pushes her away at first and there's a bit of angst caused by that, but nothing compared to Drew's situation with Mia or the frenemies situation between Travis and Viola. It was a nice romance, kind of slow-burn, and with the added bonus of jealousy caused by a very hot third party. Still, I didn't feel like their relationship was so impossible as I'd felt for the other two at the beginning.

There were also tons of hilarious moments. Kayla's mess ups with her texts, the donuts references, the get togethers with the girls and the whole gang. I always love it to catch up with old characters.

"So what's this I hear about you being pussy whipped?" Travis blurts out, making e nearly choke on my beer.
"Dude," Drew snickers.
Travis points to my sweater with his beer and raises his brows. "I know I'm pussy whipped, but that's after being married and three kids. You're still in the new relationship phase. You're supposed to cover your balls for another few months at least before you hand them over."

Overall, Kennedy Fox's style is really easy and fun to read. Their dialogues are always realistic and then they write tidbits like this that have me laughing out loud.

Christian is one of those hot doctor clichés that you only see on Instagram with a six-pack of abs and perfect smile to boot.

C'mon, we all know these people. And with know I mean STALK. Very gracefully and lady-likey, but still...

And then the ending. WHAT. THE. HECK!
The ending was hands down the most brutal of the three. Honestly, the future trope that stemmed from that final sentence is so not one of my favorites. Yet, given Logan's personality and the way Kennedy Fox always manages to let the reader know that, despite everything, the MC will stand by each other's side and never give up on their feelings, I'm positive my heart will not hurt too badly and that we'll have our HEA.

Definitely loved this series!

So happy that I found the Checkmate> series on my audible! Getting to meet each character has made me super happy - even the crazy ones! Logan and Kayla were the last couple I got to meet throughout this series. They were cute because we got to meet them in previous books and we knew something was happening between them but nothing was really going on at the same time.

Ya know?

Okay, I get it. This whole thing sounds crazy and confusing as all hell. Trust me, these two were definitely all of that and then some. I just wanted them to say 'Hey, I like you - let's get together'. It didn't happen but I really did want it to.

Of course, Logan has a past and doesn't want anyone to know about his ex or his kid. Yet, he loves his little girl and she's his entire world. So during these two books, he is trying to get back into their lives (in some way) so that he can be apart of his kid's life. It also doesn't hurt that he is slowly falling in love with Kayla.

She definitely gets her hot and cold moments when it comes to Logan. She knows about his secret and loves him for it anyways. They were both cute and had obvious chemistry. Yet, I knew something was going to happen.

Ugh, the ending. It killed me and now I need to know how it's going to end between these two!!

4.5 Glazed Donut CROWNS

With This is Dangerous, Kennedy Fox has created another book that will leave readers dangly, but in way that will leave them craving more versus wanting to kill the authors.

As with the previous main characters in the series, Logan and Kayla are great characters. Logan's characterization truly fits his last name, KNIGHT. He is sexy and charming, rushing in to save the day. His secret is only going to make readers swoon even more over this man. Plus, the man's stamina is unparalleled. Kayla is a very compassionate and giving heroine. She seeks family and love, but doesn't belittle herself for it, which readers will enjoy about her character. Surprisingly, there are a host of secrets waiting to be revealed, about both characters, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book two to see the continued development of these characters. When these final pieces fall into place, it will be interesting to see their full evolution as characters.

The chemistry as always is great. The internal monologues showcase the back and forth and the will they or won't they dilemma, creating sexual tension that you could cut with a knife. When they do finally succumb to their desires, it is explosive.

The plot, as with every previous duet in the Checkmate series, is riddled with little inferences about what is to come later as well as in book two. The cliff-hanger, as usually is not what readers expect (I know I didn't), but most of this book is the exposition and rising action of the full story-line, which covers two books. There is a slow burn component to this one that the previous duets did not have, and while it works for this couple, the slow progression is unexpected. The plot, however, picks up quickly once it gets going, and once I hit this point, it was hard to put down. Even though the pacing and eventual coupling of Kayla and Logan moves at a slower pace, readers will still be dying to get their hands on the final pieces of this duet.

This final book and couple is going to put me through the ringer, and while I don't feel like I'm on the edge of my seat like the previous books, there are so many unanswered questions and possibilities for book two that I need to know NOW. What I do know now, though, is that Kennedy Fox continues to be a one-click author for me, and I cannot wait for book 2.

Oh my goodness.

My heart is POUNDING.

My emotions are RAW.

I'm BREATHLESS.

I have NO WORDS except “WHAT THE FUDGE JUST HAPPENED?” The ending! OMG! Just, GAH! WOAH BABY, I NEED book two already.

*takes a deep breath* Okay, so This is Dangerous is BY FAR Kennedy Fox’s best opener yet. (This is book 1 of 2) This ticked all my book-worm boxes and then some. Friends to lovers is my FAVE trope and when it's done THIS WELL, I fall in love.

In all honesty, it was inevitable that I was going to love this book, I mean, Logan has been the man that has piqued my interest through all the others, his moody, broken persona was like a red rag to a raging bull for me. But actually Kennedy Fox just went above and beyond. They played out the friends to lovers trope and another fave trope of mine really well. They made Logan IRRESISTIBLE!! Kayla is hilarious, witty, sassy and really freaking sexy, I loved her!

This is Dangerous is probably the most angsty of Kennedy’s books so far. A sizzling connection is evident from the very first page and it's one that builds and stokes and burns hotter and hotter as you go through the pages. The touches and the stolen kisses are INTENSE. The sexy smiles and hidden glances are CAPTIVATING. The relationship that develops is ALL CONSUMING. Logan and Kayla are my FAVE couple so far. They fit together so well and their relationship was written to perfection.

As always, with this being book one of two we have secrets and mystery and so much suspense that radiates from this book making it so DAMN addictive. Kennedy Fox sure know how to entice and seduce with their writing, they grip and control their readers wholeheartedly. I actually never wanted this book to end. Each and every book they write just gets better and better.

This is Dangerous is written with sublime precision. It's written with thought and feeling, beauty and pain, light, darkness, secrets, lies and painful truths. It's a book that pulls the reader in so deep, takes over every emotion, takes over your heart and soul. And after that ending, my mind is reeling, my heart is pounding, my emotions are raw, my breath is stolen, but I couldn't care less. This is Dangerous is fucking AMAZING.

6 beautifully, broken, breathtaking stars.

Kennedy Fox is back, and this is best Checkmate book yet.
This book starts maybe one or two scenes before the ending of Checkmate: This is Effortless, to give some background as to how This is Effortless ended. We find out who Skylar is, and even though I had predicted who she was, the story played out in an entirely different way than I imagined. I really enjoyed getting Logan's backstory, learning why he is the way he is and why he does the things he does.
Kayla is just as fun as in all the other books, and I have always loved her character. This time, though, we see that not only does she volunteer at the animal shelter, but she also volunteers at the soup kitchen and other various places. She has such a big heart, and she is genuinely a great person. There is also her history, which leads to me believe that she does these things because of her history. I will not spoil that for you.
The romance is slow burning and angsty and wonderful. In previous books, Kayla kept trying with Logan, but in this one, she has accepted that they are just friends, and their romance builds from there. It is a "friends to lovers" done EXTREMELY WELL. I do still have some questions for some of the plot points, but because this is a duet, I have no doubt that they will be answered soon enough. I honestly cannot get my hands on Checkmate: This is Beautiful soon enough. I needed it as soon as I finished this, and I will be (im)patiently waiting until I am able to read the next.

No…No…No no no no no no..NO!!! You can not be serious right now!! It can’t end there!! (Frantically swiping my Kindle) Damn you Kennedy Fox!! You do this to me every single time, and I never learn!!

I feel as though I am suffering from an anxiety attack right now. No book has affected me as much as the books in this series. As soon as the book appears on my Kindle, I cancel EVERYTHING, and lock myself away with no interruptions. I then read said book and die on the spot as I reach the end. Every.Single.Time. If I didn’t love my Kindle as much as I do, I would have probably tossed it across the room! Book one is always a killer in the Checkmate series, because it always ends in a cliffhanger. Which I don’t actually mind, it’s just I forget it’s coming. It’s like BANG!! Mwhahaha!! I am then left overanalysing everything I have just read and what the possibilities of what is to come in book two. I’m left with one almighty book hangover until the next book is released.

This is book 1 in the Logan & Kayla Saga-a second-chance romance. You don't need to read any of the other Checkmate series to enjoy this one, but is always recommended as they are both introduced in the earlier books.

I have loved each duet and the characters they focus on, my favourite being Courtney and Drew. Saying that I have always had my eye on Logan and Kayla, and cannot tell you how excited I was to have an advanced copy flash up on my Kindle. I have been literally DYING to get inside these characters heads and let me tell you they do not disappoint.

If you have been following the series in order then you will be aware at the end of the last book, Checkmate: This is Effortless, we were left with Kayla texting Courtney saying she had found out who the mystery Skylar was. Well…I had my theory, but that was blown out of the water, because we do find out who she is and why Logan has been so tight-lipped about her. We also find out why Logan is so anti-relationship when it comes to Kayla, even though it is obvious he has feelings for her. I love the jealousy he has towards anyone who even looks at Kayla, and the clear protectiveness he has for her. He is so sweet and attentive, so it is no surprise that Kayla is confused as to why Logan keeps pushing her away. Kayla tries so desperately to move on and date new people, but her heart always takes her back to the one man who she has wanted from the very beginning. There is so much going on with these characters and although we do have some questions answered, there are even more questions by the time we get to the cliffhanger, and what a cliffy that was!! A serious gasp out loud whilst clutching my pearls kinda reaction.

We get to see the old crew as well and how their relationships are thriving, and I was thrilled to read more about Courtney and Drew and what is next for them.

This series gets better and better with each duet and I can safely say that this is by far one of my favourite and best reads, not just this year but ever. It’s one that you can go back to and enjoy just as much as the first time. Like with the previous books before it, I rate Checkmate: This is dangerous 5 BIG Gold Stars!! Outstanding and so highly recommended.

Even though I knew to expect some heartbreak at the end of This is Dangerous (since it's book 1 in the duet), my heart still wasn't quite prepared. Though this is the 5th book in the Checkmate series, it can be enjoyed without reading books 1-4. I do recommend it though since characters from those books appear in This is Dangerous, and the main characters, Logan and Kayla, were previously introduced as well.

Logan and Kayla's story was a slower burn than the previous books, but once it got going, I didn't want to put it down. It felt more raw and emotional, with both the hero and heroine dealing with the demons and baggage from their pasts. It was heartbreaking to see how broken and damaged they believed themselves to be and how this shaped the people they became. I think of all the Checkmate characters, Logan and Kayla feel the most real. They aren't perfect people. They have insecurities, fears, and are doing their best with their less than ideal circumstances. The slow burn friends to lovers really works in this book and I enjoyed the build up, innuendo, and angst. They have incredible chemistry and Detective Knight did not disappoint in (and out of) the bedroom. ;)

Appearances by #TeamDrewtney and #TeamTraviola helped add to the fun and there are some incredibly hilarious text messages exchanged between our characters. I'm excited for the conclusion to Logan and Kayla's story in This is Beautiful and September can't get here fast enough!

I'm not really sure what to say yet. Thankfully, I liked this book a lot more than the last one, so that's a definite bonus. I've been waiting for Kayla and Logan for what seems like ever, so I couldn't wait to jump in to this book.

Ultimately, I liked the characters, but held the bar extremely high for their story. It was fine, but I just wasn't enamoured with it. And the big part that bugs me was how many inconsistencies there are in the story, and random plot devices that mean absolutely nothing to the story. Devices that SHOULD add something, and fail on most accounts.

Looking back, there's very little plot. There's only scenes that when dissected at the end, don't lead up to anything. I felt the chemistry more during the previous books than I did here in their entire story. It was more focused on Kayla's stupid decisions and Logan's lack of a brain.

Well, this was meant to be two or three sentences for now. Oops. I'll be posting a full review shortly.

5 "Sprinkled Donuts" Stars!!!

WHAT! THE! HECK! EVEN! WITH! THAT! ENDING! Even though, I kind of, sort of thought that that was going to happen. I was still somewhat surprised. KF sure knows how to do cliffhangers and they do it right. I am so desperately in NEED of the second book!!! I'm going to be on pins and needles waiting for September.

Logan Knight is a man of many questions. I was intrigued with his character after he was introduced in the previous books. He's a mystery that I so wanted to solve. He's the silent and brooding type. And you know even underneath his tough exterior, there's more to him. There's a lot of things that Logan keeps to himself, he doesn't like to let people in. With his job, as being a detective and a few other things which I'll keep to myself as seeing I don't want to spoil anything. There's not much time for anything else in his life. But maybe the right person can change that, and break down some of his walls.

Kayla Sinclair is a true angel. She gives her time and volunteer's as much as she can. She has the biggest heart and so much love to give. As much as she is a happy person, she's guarded. There are things in her past she doesn't like talking about. When she first lays eyes on Logan she knows she's in trouble. Not only because she feels an attraction towards him, but also because he might be the one who breaks her.

Gahhhh, I can't say enough how much I freaking loved Logan and Kayla!!!! They were absolutely ah-mazing together! Their connection was unmistakable and their chemistry was off-the-charts HOT HOT HOT!!! Logan was so swoon worthy, my gosh that man was incredible. Logan and Kayla are the perfect pair. Absolutely loved their wittiness and playfulness, ugh I just loved everything about THEM!

"Is it possible two people with broken pasts can feel whole again together?"

I can honestly say that Logan Knight has stolen my heart. And it's official, HE'S MY FAVORITE!!!!! I mean, I thought Travis was in a league of his own, but ooooh boy Logan skyrocketed to #1. I still love you King, but Logan has replaced you. 🙈

KF, what can I say? You two are just my favorite! I love the books you write and the stories you create and the characters that come to life within the pages. I'll never get enough of reading your books. Can't wait for all the awesomeness that is headed our way.

ACTUAL RATING 4.5 STARS

Kennedy Fox is one of my favorite New Adult authors because they know how to create an addictive and cute romance story that I can’t get enough of. They are one of the few authors that consistently create books that I can read in one sitting, and that’s what happened with this book as well! I began Checkmate: This is Dangerous at night and finished it the next morning because I could not get enough of Logan and Kayla’s blossoming relationship that was so cute and steamy!

What I love about Kennedy Fox is that all their stories interconnect, so I have been reading all their books that follow characters who are all friends with each other. This book follows two characters who have been on the sidelines for the first four novels, in the Checkmate series, and we finally got to see their relationship grow and come together in their own book! I loved reading about these two characters who both have dark pasts and are friends with each other because their dynamic and banter is so easy going and flows so well. Reading about the tension brewing between them and seeing them open up to one another, as the book progressed, kept me reading until late in the night to see what was going to happen next. I was absolutely obsessed with the romance that blossomed between them and could not get enough of it!

I really loved this novel and the two main characters who were so precious together and on their own, with their little quirks and pasts that I loved learning more about. There were so many turns that this book took, and while I did predict most of them, I didn’t mind guessing the plot twists because I loved the direction that this book went. With each new development that happened in this story, my excitement grew even more because I am a sucker for a dramatic novel. I cannot wait to read the sequel because I was left on the edge of my seat wanting more, and I cannot wait to see more of Logan and Kayla to see what is going to happen next!

This book to put it in simpler words is mind-blowing. I legit got done with this book in one sitting and got more than I expected. I have been falling in love with this duo since the first checkmate series but till now I thought Drew and Courtney were my favorite couple but I think Logan and Kayla overtook them and are now my most favorite couple in the series. Logan is one yummy Daddy and Kayla is one feisty lady who loves animals. This couple melted my heart into poodles and I love love love them. Thank you guys for making a story that I wanted to read for a long time now!!
It's PERFECT to the T.

4.5 I got 99 Donuts 'cause Kayla ate one... Stars!

It's official. Kennedy Fox just doesn't know how to write a bad book. It's just not a thing. Not that I was expecting anything less with this one. Logan and Kayla's story was more than I expected and oh my goodness I loved it so much. I love everything about Kayla's personality because it reminds me of myself. And Logan? Ugh Logan is just, the right amount of broody and sexy and sweet and GAH! Basically, I need me a Logan and STAT! There is so much swoon in this book it's ridiculous. Kennedy Fox I am ready for more! Which is code for: IS IT SEPTEMBER YET?!

Kayla was adamant. There were only a few things in her life she wanted on a daily basis: her dogs, her donuts, and him.

Logan Knight.

And while all this may be true, there was only one of those that she wasn't getting. But the woman was relentless at this point.

"Right now, my lifeline was Logan Knight and no matter how many times he wanted to lie to himself that the timing wasn't right for us, I'd be there to remind him otherwise."

And while Logan acts aloof, he's more than affected by Kayla than he like to let on.

But the constant ringing of not being good enough gets louder everyday...

"She's too sweet for her own good—the poster child of Mother Teresa. She deserves someone who's uncomplicated and can devote all their attention to her. She deserves better."

The encounters they face with one another day to day makes it easier for Kayla, yet harder for Logan to resist.

Heated glances, longing touches...

It all just became too much to continue to ignore...

"One moment we're joking, the next our mouths were fighting an unwinnable battle that I don't think either of us saw coming. The greed, heat, and passion between us is undeniable, but it's also dangerous."

Dangerous or not, once the first barrier broke, it was almost impossible to stop.

"On the inside I'm dying. Dying for his lips on mine again. Dying for his hands and body on me. Dying to feel that electricity burn between us."

"When you find a girl who makes you feel normal and wanted again, you grab tight and you don't let go."

But you must never forget the outside forces that try to make themselves known so it can try to come between you indefinitely...

"Logan Knight is who I want and can't have. The heart wants what it wants and I'm not sure anyone will be able to change that. I'm doomed."

I've been hooked on Kennedy Fox's books for a while now, so when I had the chance to sign up to read and review their newest book...the one that started Kayla and Logan's romance, This is Dangerous, I was so there!!

Right from the first time we saw Kayla and Logan interact, I knew I would love their romance! And sure enough, once I started This is Dangerous, I couldn't put it down!

Wowzers!!!

I've loved/really enjoyed the previous Checkmate books, but this one is definitely my favourite so far!! I absolutely adored Kayla and felt a major kinship with her. Her love of dogs, indulgence in bath bombs, and just overall love of all things donuts made me recognize her as a kindred spirit immediately! And Logan....oh, Logan. *dreamy sigh* I love Travis and Drew...but Logan, Logan is my man. I've always been a sucker for the broody guys, and my love of Veronica Mars Logan and Gilmore Girls Logan makes me immediately gravitate towards any other hunks named Logan, too, so this book was clearly meant to make its way into my hands. :P

The romance was AMAZING!!! The story was fast-paced and riveting--I didn't want to put the book down at all!! And the build-up and development of their relationship was absolutely wonderful! I've loved the idea of Kayla and Logan together from the first time we see them together in the previous books, but getting to see them actually come together in This is Dangerous was wonderful! They both have some darkness in their pasts, but they bring out the best in one another, and I love seeing them together soooo much!

Overall, I loved This is Dangerous! As always, the cliffhanger was soooo brutal, but this one is definitely my favourite of Kennedy Fox's Checkmate books so far and I can't wait to read the conclusion to Logan and Kayla's story, This is Beautiful!!!

Yup yup, here they go again. Kennedy Fox doing what they do best by giving me a book that brings out all the emotions.

At the end of Drew and Courtney's book we were already salivating for Kayla and Logan's story because they dangled that juicy donut in front of us. Who is Skylar?

Well we find out in This Is Dangerous but also find out other complications that stand between Kayla and Logan. The chemistry is there like an electric current between these two and I didn't know whether to scream at Logan or kiss him at times. It's so clear that these two need to be together and the push and pull that exists had me wanting to pull my hair out at times but I loved every second of it.

Logan will make your heart SWOON and dayum nothing is sexier than him being the Knight in shining armour with Kayla.

Kayla I loved her she was soo sweet, so generous and kind. I felt for her everytime knowing that she wanted Logan but had to deal with him being so closed off at times.

These two though just can't stay away from each other and their moments are so sweet.

So much more for me to say and I will probably add to this review later on once I wrap my head around this book because of course this is a duet and in Kennedy Fox fashion they leave you with a few WTF moments that will have your mind working overtime trying to figure things out.

Another fav read that leaves you in excitement for more.
