These are some absolutely incredible headphones.
Went through my 50 or so reference tunes and my word.
The sound is stunning.
Across several genres.
An absolutely incredible buy at 2 to 3 times the price.
Comes with an upgraded cable and two sets of pads.
I love these!!!!
Edit, below another buyer recommended removing the grills and the little pieces of foam inside.
DO IT !!!!!!!!
Believe it or not the sound improves dramatically.
Is it a "Bass cannon"? - No, while the bass is a bit emphasized over highs & mids, it is within reason.
Is it "Treble-harsh"? - No, I heard no sibilance, "ringing", or harshness before or after modding.
How is the soundstage? - Very good! Not just "Wide", but fully-enveloping .
Are they worth the price? - Definitely. For about $350 US dollars, I consider them very worth the price. Sound is top-shelf, giving the impression that they cost more than they actually do. BUT you have to put some work into them to get them that way. Out of the box, they are just "good". I wouldn't return them, but their potential is just SO much more modded.
KEN Do you have any complaints? - Yes. The build quality and fit. Both are detractors, but not deal-breakers. Not uncomfortable, but could certainly be better implemented in future versions.
What did I listen to auditioning them?
Diagnostic Listening -
1. "Chesky Records Ultimate Demonstration Disc"
General Listening –
1. "The Sound Of Silence" - Pentatonix
2. "The Sound Of Silence" - Disturbed
3. “Why Me?” – Planet P
Blues/Jazz –
1. “Round Midnight” – Thelonious Monk
3. “A Night In Tunisia” – Dizzy Gillespi
4. “Mood Indigo” – Duke Ellington

Still reading? OK, here are some particulars. Strings & piano sound detailed but not harsh in any way. That is a major "tell" with the quality of headphones for me. No listening fatigue whatsoever with these headphones even during multi-hour sessions. That's a huge plus in my book. Bass could be a bit more emphasized but these headphones EQ extremely well. I boosted the bass up a bit using the free Peter "Peace" digital equalizer software to compensate under Windows. As far as driving these large planars it seems they drive very easily without needing much power. Perhaps that is due to the extreme thinness of the mylar sheet sandwiched between the planar magnets? My Mad Dog T-50RP planars require far more power and even my Hifiman HE400i need a beefier amp than these Phantom headphones and don't sound nearly as nice. The HE400i are a bit too strident in the highs for my taste. Not a hint of strident sound in the highs with these Phantoms. Soundstage is very wide as you would expect given that they are open style phones.
Comfort with these headphones is also a huge plus. The clamping force of the Mad Dogs and HE400i is very tight. These headphones have a very light clamping force yet don't seem to fall off my head. I did use one simple modification to make them even more comfortable. I put two Dekoni leather "nuggets" along the inside of the headband at + and - 45 deg from vertical to help reduce the head pressure. This is something I do on a lot of my headphones that have a headband suited for this mod. After doing this these headphones became the most comfortable phones I've ever experienced by far. Even my Sony MDR-1A's can't compete in the comfort category. The fact that there is a huge amount of room for your ears in the cups means that they breath well. However, I suggest you remove the regular pads that are placed on these headphones when they arrive (the "shaggies") and use the optional memory foam pads they include instead.
What's bad about them? Only some very minor things. My main concern is the round, black metal hinge that holds the cups to the headband. It's full metal but it uses a single tiny screw to keep the black hinge secured to the headband metal Y-forks. When my Phantoms arrived, two of these small screws were already loose and the cup quickly fell off the Y-fork. I tightened up the two loose small screws on the black hinge using a jeweler's screwdriver but I think Thieaudio needs a more secure screw clamping system for these black hinges. I'll probably end up needing to occasionally re-tighten these small hinge screws from time to time.
Note that in addition to having two pairs of pads ("shaggy" and "non-shaggy") you also get two different headphone cables and two adapters to convert the included balanced cables to single ended versions. The included hard case that holds everything is fine. Not the highest in quality but I don't want headphone manufacturers wasting too much of my money on fancy cases, anyway.
The audio YouTube reviewer BGGAR -- love this OCD guy! -- seems to have it correct about these headphones. They are very good for the money. However, I have no idea where Thieaudio comes from as this is their very first "Chi-Fi" product. If they can keep producing this headphone to the same audio standards then they should do well. Just note there is a history of some Chinese manufacturers slacking off on quality of their construction and the quality of parts utilized with the passage of time. Once the early "good reviews" come in they begin to "cheap-a-fi" the units. Hopefully, Thieaudio doesn't go down this path. For now I can say without reservation that this is an extremely nice sounding large planar open-style headphone for a very good price!
And with that..... I'm outta here.
UPDATE 08/04/19 - Still really enjoying the sound of this large planar headphone. I did experiment and make one simply mod, though. The outside face of the cups (behind the black metal grill) each have two round foam pads that slightly overlap each other and cover the planar transducers. They serve to damping the highs a bit. This is not all bad. In fact, I have a real problem with my HiFiMan 400i planars because the highs are just too piercing. However, these transducers in the Phantom are not that piercing to begin with so I figured why not remove the foam behind the grills. It allows the highs to give a bit more definition and expands the soundstage even wider. Four small screws hold the black grill to the wooden cups. You can use a jeweler's screwdriver to remove them. Once you do this you'll then need to very carefully pry off the black metal grill. Be careful in doing this because the black metal is thin and is still being tightly held to the wooden cups due to the strong pull of the magnets in the planar transducers. Once exposed, simply remove the round foam pads (they aren't glued on, thankfully!) and then put the black grills back on. Don't use too much force when screwing the grill screws back in because the screws go directly into the wood housing and you don't what to strip the existing threads in the wood. I like this mod and will keep it. For me it made a great headphone just a little bit better.
Note that there is also a rectangular foam pad on the inside face of these transducers. However, that pad is glued on. I didn't fool with these inside foam pads because I didn't want to boost the highs too much and make the headphone overly bright. The inside foam pads also help to diffuse the sound coming into your ears off the flat surface of the planar transducers so that the transducer sound more "natural", which I think is a good thing.
UPDATE 08/06/19 -- In listening to Joshua Valour YouTube review on the HifiMan Ayra (June 24,2019), much of the specific sound quality he describes on the Ayra is exactly the same sort of thing I'm hearing with these Phantom headphones. Hope both he and "Zeos" get around to reviewing the Thieaudio Phantom someday soon.
UPDATE 08/16/19 -- Replaced the OEM earpads with Brainwavz perforated PU leather earpads (size XL). Also removed the rectangular foam glue to the inside of the cups. Came off easily. Like the sound even better!

First off these headphones seem to be well built no real creaks when pulling them about, the size adjustment is a bit hit or miss click wise but visually it’s ok, the headphone band is comfy with no complaints here and my god these phones are light for planar’s just as well as the clamp force isn’t the greatest but they never feel like they’re going to fall off in ordinary use.
Sound wise without getting too in depth i’d call them musical and fun and not micro detail or bass monsters…That’s not a criticism in any way as they bring a wide sound stage that manages to separate instruments better than my hd660s’s, ok vocals especially female aren’t as pinpoint focused but on a flip side they bring realism to them if that makes sense.
Bass wise they’re tight, fast with a deep, not super sub sound but solid enough and man they can go loud…again no complaints.
Mids for me seem to work well with the bass and upper frequencies, I don’t find they too forward but slightly less focused/tight but still very enjoyable.
Upper frequencies are good no sibilance but maybe the upper frequencies roll off a bit?.. some of the younger folksmight help with that lol.
Overall I can’t really find anything to complain about considering their price point, thoroughly enjoyable, musical and entertaining headphones.
